Blog Day :

4533 Post No. : 16100

So we are at it again. For the 161st time in the blog ! We arrive at post number 16100 in the blog with this writeup !

I have mentioned it in the past that we no longer look forward to these century posts with the same eagerness as in the past. This applies not only to blog centuries but also to the centuries of artists. At this moment, a good number of artists are into their ninetees. I propose to take them all up to their respective centuries after we are done with this blog century.

This post too takes up one such case. The artists in questions are Shankar Jaikishan. If some artists are in their 90s, then they are in their 990s- 999 to be precise. This post sees then break into the four figure mark. We have had singers (four) and lyricists (three) who are in four figures in the blog. Shankar Jaikishan join them today and become the first music directors to reach 1000 songs in the blog.

I was in quite a dimemma to pick a song for the occasion. All iconic Shankar Jaikishan songs from the golden era of HFM are altready covered. A few leftover songs of that era somehow did not fit the bill. I was looking for a special song- typically a rare song.

Finally I have zoeroed in on a song which qualifies to be called a rare song. It is not a song of 1940s or 1950s. Rather it is a song of recent vintage (by the shandards of this blog).

Moreover, this song is quite unusal in the sense that one would not guess it to be a Shankar Jaikishan song if he is not informed beforehand. One would guess it to be a song composed by Kalyanji Anandji, or R D Burman, or Bappi Lahiri, considering when this song was composed, but this song is a creation of Shankar Jaikishan, or more precisely Shankar (seeing that Jaikishan had already expired by then).

It is quite a surprise that this song did not get popular. I was very much into HFM listening those days, but even I never got to listen to this song even once ! That has to do with the fact that the movie did not do well at the box office. It was not really a surprise seeing that the movie did not star Amitabh Bachchan. The movie starred Jeetendra and Neetu Singh. Jeetendra, alongwith Sri Devi or Jaya Prada could draw crowds, but not Jeetendra and Neetu Singh, and the movie duly flopped. The songs of this movie, including this song remained unheard by majority of music lovers.

This movie was “Chorni”(1981). I had heard about this movie but I did not consider this movie worthy of watching. So I saved my 3 Rs and 80 paise (ticket for a balcony seat) which I then spent on watching some other “worthy” movie. 🙂

“Chorni”(1981) was produced by V K Sood and directed by Jyoti Swaroop for Kesar Films, Bombay. The movie had Jeetendra, Neetu Singh, Dr Shreeram Laagoo, Indrani Mukherjee, Sonia Sahni, Jalal Agha, Helen, Leela Mishra, Anita, Shashi Kiran, Sunil Dhawan, Sundar Taneja, Rajesh Valecha, Master Shaaka, Baby Suparna, L R Tiwari, Ramlal, Jugnu, Uma Khosla, Parveen Pal etc in it. Aruna Irani, Ajeet, Mohan Choti were also there in guest appearances.

The movie had Six songs in it.

This song, the second song from the movie to appear in the vlog, is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Shailly Shailendra is the lyricist. Shankar (under the brandname Shankar Jaikishan) is the composer.

The song is picturised as a club dance song on Helen.

Those were the days of disco songs. Music director was clearly under instructions to create a Disco song. The song sounds like a song meant for those days, but it is not a disco song. It is a western style song with western orchestration allright, but it is a proper song with proper lyrics, just how it used to be in Hindi movie songs in pre disco days.

Listening to this song is a scintillating experience. I have listened to this song quite a few times. The song grabs your mindshare on the very first listen. It is not like those songs that one needs to listen to a few times before it grows on you. It grows on you immediately, even before Asha Bhonsle sings her initial lines.

The video is over four minutes long. The audio is even longer at over six minutes. The singing is superb, as one expects from Asha Bhonsle. The music is quite incredible to listen to, and the music is what one remembers long after the song is over. What a song. The song may be an unusual composition from Shankar Jaikishan. The song deserves to be presented in the blog as their 1000th song in the blog.

Here is this special forgotten gem. Let us savour this song and welcome Shankar Jaikishan to the exclusive club of HFM artists who have completed their 1000 songs in the blog.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all. Our special thanks to those who have repeatedly petitioned me. One thousandth song of Shankar Jaikishan was their long pending demand.

We are all happy that Shankar Jaikishan become the first music directors in the blog to reach four figures. In time, they could well become the first music directors whose entire set of 1200 odd HFM compositions may be showcased in the blog. we are just 200 odd songs away from that mark.

So let us celebrate blog’s 16100th post and Shankar Jaikishan’s 1000th song in the blog with this fantastic hidden gem of a song.

mast jawaani meri ee
kuchh yoon machalne lagi ee
jaise ke koi kali ee
hai phool ban’ne lagi ee
aa baahen badhaa
na daaman chhudaa
aa baahen badhaa
na daaman chhudaa
hai kaisa ye kaisa nasha aa

chadhne laga

hadh se guzarne laga aa
haaye ye kaisa nasha aa
hosh mera
udne laga aa
hadd se guzarne laga
haaye ye kaisa nasha aa aa aa

mehfil mein jaise chiraag
bujhte huye phir jalen
mere bhi seene mein kyun kuchh aisi halchal chale
mujhe kya hua
ae saaqi bata
mujhe kya hua
ae saaqi bata
hai kaisa ye kaisa nasha aa aa

chadhne laga
badhne laga
hadd se guzarne laga aa
haaye ye kaisa nasha aa
hosh mera aa
udhne laga aa
hadd se guzarne laga
haaye ye kaisa nasha aa aa aa

jo main idhar ko chaloon
udhhar ko badhe hain kadam
dil bhi hai bas mein nahin
mitne lagi hai sharam
hai josh jawaan
ye hosh kahaan
hai josh jawaan
ye hosh kahaan
hai kaisa ye kaisa nasha aa

chadne laga aa aa
badhne laga
hadh se gujarne laga
haaye ye kaisa nasha aa

Hi Atul Ji,

I was just browsing the blog while listening to songs on my iPhone playlist, and suddenly this song jumps up – I have heard this song a thousand times and have also watched this movie, but each time I hear this song it fills me with tremendous excitement and energy.

Although SJ have composed fast paced songs, specially in Shammu Kapoor movies, this song is unique in that it never loses the tempo!! Great job by Shankar Ji!!

Also, I have always wondered what the refrain used was – you just mention “Viva La” but it sounds more like – Dasvidaniya or Ferrasania or something similar. I wonder if someone who is reading this or our panel of experts can decode this refrain!!

But reading this was fun! And congrats on getting the 1K songs of SJ on the blog!!

Regards

Thanks for your comment. Your comment made me revisit this post again. What a remarkable song this is. Though I am the author of this writeup, even I had forgotten about this song again, after publishing this writeup four years ago.
The word, on listening to the song again, sounds like “vilastania” or so. It could be some foreign language term (that may have a different spelling) that I am not aware of.
