#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————

Greetings to all for the on-going ‘Ganesh Utsav’ which is being celebrated all over!!!

Eight days of the festival have already passed since its beginning on 19th this month. The Ganpati Idols scheduled for ‘one and half day’, ‘three days’, ‘five days’ and ‘seven days’ have already been ‘bid farewell’ with a request to the god ‘to come early next year’.

God Ganesh is also revered as a god of ‘performing arts’ besides being the god of ‘wisdom’, ‘riddhi-siddhi’, and the god of ‘scribes’ and ‘authors’. This festival is the time when we have music, cultural programs, musical programs, plays staged, and offering of the prayers to the god with full emotions and energy.

For people like me, who grow in the seventies and early eighties, the Ganesh Festival is also the time when we are lost in the nostalgia of our growing years. That is visiting the community club for ‘Ganesh Pooja’, and enjoying the programs held there over the next ten or eleven days. I still vividly remember that the first day there would be the ‘sthhaapna’ of Ganesh Idol and a devotional musical program. And the last day would be ‘Satyanarayan Kathaa’ and ‘mahaa prasaad’. As a child we were always interested in the ‘prasaad’ and the ‘modaks’ of various types. (For that matter even after growing and still, that is the thing most of the family members are interested even now 🙂 ). In between the first and the last day of the festival there were several programs held which were staged at the ‘colony club’ we were staying then. These included plays, orchestras, mimicry program, a cultural program for all who can participate and present their art, if possible screening of a movie (mostly a movie from a black & white era and if the ‘budget’ permitted then there would also be a color movie or movie from recent years 🙂 ). Since my parents would participate in ‘Marathi plays’ that is the first thing that we would eagerly await along with the rehearsals, and secondly the ‘orchestras or the ‘musical night’ and ‘movies’.

This is the festival which brings back many memories of the HFM songs that were popular then and also the many songs which would be common for all ‘orchestra groups’. These would be songs from ‘yesteryears’ or from the ‘golden era of HFM’. The film and non-film qawwalis were an added attraction. Couple of ‘orchestra groups’ which were repeated visitors to our colony festivals also had our favorite singers among them whom we were happy to watch singing again and again. I am not going to repeat the list of all the songs here, but here I would definitely like to mention the following songs which were common to all orchestra groups which I can recall. There were many others, which I am not remembering now. 🙂

‘kuhu kuhu boley koyaliyaa’
‘moraa naadaan baalmaa’
‘chhotisi umar mein hai lag gaya rog’
‘ o door ke musaafir ham ko bhi saath le le re’
‘suhaani raat dhhal chuki’
‘yaalaa yaalaa dil le gayi’
‘jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabi’
‘saj rahi gali meri maa’
‘ham kisi se kam nahin’
‘govindaa aalaa re aalaa’
‘satyam shivam sundaram’
‘mere nainaa saawan bhaado’
‘chadhhta sooraj dheere dheere’
‘khaike paan banaraswala’
‘chal chal chal mere saathi’ etc etc …

There would be some Marathi songs also which were played then regularly. The joy of all this that is the ‘Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav’ was discontinued after our shifting to another place and simultaneously after my joining a ‘construction company’ to work. And thereafter staying away in other parts of the country for job got it all into the history of my life. I am not aware if these types of programs are still held during this festival at the place we were staying from 1968 to 1984. I think it must have all become a party of history now after the ‘TV’ or ‘internet’ age. But in turn the internet has also been helpful in unearthing lost gems that were created in HFM. Today I bring to you one such song from an obscure movie.

Today’s song is from the ‘1984’ movie ‘Poster’. I was not aware of a movie with this ‘title’ but very recently I came across this movie title while looking for Ganpati Songs and when I listened to this song I felt it like a familiar composition heard many years back, may be in the eighties, and never heard thereafter. So I am presenting this song today which is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and accompanied by chorus.

As per information available in Geet Kosh Vol-6 (1981-1985) this movie ‘Poster-1984’ (passed by Censor Board on 31.03.1984) was directed by R.S. Vikal. He also wrote the screenplay of this movie. This movie was produced by R.K. Gupta for ‘Virat Chitralok’, Bombay/Delhi. The cast of this movie included Zareena Wahab, Vasant Josalkar, Deepak Uchani, Raja Bundela, Ravi Vaswani, Pratap Patanjali, Ran Singh Sejwal, Banwari Taneja, Narayan Thakur, Shobha, R.K. Gupta, Meena Thakur and others. B.M. Shah and Panchanand Pathak had a special appearance in this movie.

This movie has seven songs written by Dr Shankar Shesh and R.S. Vikal. Though Geet Kosh does not mention the lyricist name for individual songs it does mentions that most of the songs for this movie were written by Dr Shankar Shesh. Music for this movie was composed by Gopal Jwala. The playback singers for this movie were Mahendra Kapoor and Chandrani Mukherjee.

The name of the music director Gopal Jwala is new to me and so far from the information available on internet this is the only movie mentioned where music is composed by him.

However, the name of Dr Shankar Shesh must be familiar to knowledgeable readers. He was a playwright and had written story & dialogues for movies too. Dr Shankar Shesh was born in Bilaspur on 2nd October’1933 and he passed away on 28th November’1981. He was known as a multifaceted and gifted writer. He started his writing with writing poems first when he was studying in eighth standard in school. He was a brilliant student and a good orator too but he was not interested in Maths and Science. He would write poems and recite them in school programs. He studied up to Intermediate at Bilaspur and for further studies in BA Honors he took admission in the Hislop College at Nagpur. His writings flourished in his college days and the ‘writer’ and ‘poet’ in him reached new dimensions there. His poem ‘mitra ke naam paati’ become famous. Simultaneously he participated in ‘Kavi Sammelans’ and also become a name on ‘Radio’ (aakaash vaani). He did plays and wrote his first play ‘Moortikaar’ (or Murtikaar (1955)). Around the same time he wrote the novel ‘Tendu Ke Patte’ on the backdrop of Chhattisgarh. He wrote novels like ‘Chetna’, ‘Dharmakshetre-Kurukshetre’, and plays like ‘Bin Baati Ke Deep (1958), ‘Til Ka Taad (1958), ‘Baadhh Ka Paani (1968)’, ‘Khajuraho Ka Shilpi (1970), ‘Ek aur Dronacharya’(1971),‘Fandi(1971), ‘Raktabeej(1976)’, ‘Poster(1977), Gharonda’(1978), ‘Komal Gandhar’ (1979), ‘Dooriyaan’(1981), and others. Directors like B.V. Karanth, Arvind Deshpande, Satyadev Dubey, Mushtaq Kak, Ashok Goswami and others staged many of the plays written by Dr Shankar Shesh.

Movies were made on his stories ‘Gharonda-1977’ and ‘Dooriyaan-1979’ where the movies came first and the staging of these plays was made later. He also wrote dialogues for the movie ‘Solvaan Saawan-1978’ and ‘Dooriyaan-1979’. The movie ‘Dooriyaan-1979’ also fetched him the ‘Filmfare Award’ for Best Story.

Dr Shankar Shesh loved his home land Chhatisgarh and its culture very much.

He was a voracious reader too and read wide ranging books, literature in English, Hindi and Marathi. His thoughtfulness and contemplation has reflections in his writings and in the various characters of his stories or plays. He also translated plays for children. His plays got famous on stage and were aired on ‘Radio’ and ‘TV’ frequently. He especially wrote play ‘Chehre’ (1977) for ‘Doordarshan’. His plays have also been translated in many languages. His various research works include ‘Language Issue In India’, ‘Kaamkaazi Hindi’, ‘Hindi Kahaani Ka Vikaas Pramukh Kathaakaar’, ‘Rachnavali’, ‘Marathi Kahaani aur Pramukh Kathaakaar’ etc. He also studied the language ‘Tulu’ and wrote a book on it when he was doing his post-graduation. He also wrote the plays ‘Hindi Ka Bhoot’, ‘Nagpuri Hindi’ when the ‘rashtrabhaashaa Hindi’ movement was around.

Dr Shankar Shesh’s professional journey started from Nagpur as a Professor of Hindi in ‘Morris College’ (which is known as Nagpur University now). After that he went to Rewa (M.P) and from there to Shahdol. During these days he wrote the poem “Sangi Chal Bhillai Jaavo”. During these years there was a thing associated with him that he would not stay at any location for more than three years. Even in Shahdol where he stayed for five years he would shift his residence to various locations in the city.

From Shahdol he shifted to Bhopal, and finally to Bombay in the seventies as a ‘Chief Officer (Rajbhaashaa Vibhaag) in State Bank of India. During this period he wrote the “Hindi Banking Shabdkosh”.
After coming to Bombay he got to interact with Hindi Film personalities and that is when movies were made on his stories and plays. Director Bhimsain made ‘Gharonda’ after listening to his story which Dr Shankar Shesh used to discuss with his friends after writing a play.

However his untimely death prevented some more movies on his stories which were in the pipeline. It is mentioned in his life sketch that Shashi Kapoor was interested in making a movie on ‘Ek Aur Dronacharya’ and also the great V. Shantaram had got the manuscript of ‘Khajuraho Ka Shilpi’. But that could not happen because of his death.

Among his sons all got education in engineering. After passing away of Dr Shankar Shesh and his wife (around 2015), his son Sanjay is continuing to promote his plays and also new playwriters through ‘Shankar Shesh Foundation Trust’.

The story of today’s movie ‘Poster-1984’ is based on tribal area of Bastar (Chhatisgarh). Dr Shankar Shesh had travelled a lot in Bastar for understanding the lives of the people there and the problems faced by them. As mentioned in one of the articles on him his play ‘Poster’ revolves around an innocent incident, which leads to a revolution in a small village. He created a wonderful play by using traditional “Kirtankaar’s style” (storytellers), using songs and music to tell the story.

A poster creates a huge fuss that changes the lives of the villagers. In this play the tribals oppose the exploitation of the rights by the landlords and Government. But a small spark leads to a big fire and a small incident make the people realise their power and fight for their rights in the society.

In today’s song we can see Dr Shankar Shesh mentioning about the ‘labour’ or ‘shram’ and also taking a dig at the prevailing societal conditions and political leaders which was his wont and featured prominently in his writings.

Only the audio of today’s song is available. Also I could not find this movie ‘Poster-1984’ available online. I would request knowledgeable readers who have watched this movie to share more about this movie, and its songs.

Let us now enjoy this wonderful song in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor.

With this song the movie ‘Poster-1984’ makes its debut on the blog and lyricist Dr Shankar Shesh and music composer Gopal Jwala also makes their debut on this blog today.

Nicely written, Avinash ji.

The opening lines are by Sant Tulsidas ji. Over the years, many famous singers have sung it.

Dr Shankar Shesh and Tulu!!! Who could have imagined such a connection!!! I should look for the book.

I had already shared this link too with my write up. However only one was uploaded with the post. If you notice the link uploaded on the blog mentions the lyricist name as Sudhakar Sharma, but this link mentions it correctly as Dr Shankar Shesh.
