Ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan

Posted on: February 24, 2009

Most of the time, I do not remember more than the first one or two lines of a song, and therefore my appreciation of such songs is not all that indepth.

When I went deep into the lyrics of this song from “Jaal”, my mind kept boggling. The music was nice, and the lyrics were so expressive and so sensuous. One can visualise the setting just by listening to Hemant Kumar’s soothing voice. This is an ideal “Chaayageet” song too, full with words like “Chaand”, “raat” etc.

The song is picturised on a young and dashing looking Dev Anand ( who was then the right age to play a hero) and a pretty Geeta Bali.

This song has a duet version too and now the lyrics of that version too have been provided (thanks to Khyati Bhatt who sent me the lyrics)

Solo version

Duet version

Song- Ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan (Jaal) (1952) Singer-Hemant Kumar/ Hemant Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-S D Burman

aaa hahahaha
Ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan
sun ja dil ki daastaan
Ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan
sun ja dil ki daastaan

hmm hmm
he pedon ki shaakhon pe
pedon ki shaakhon pe
soyi soyi chaandni
pedon ki shaakhon pe
tere khayaalon me khoyi khoyi chaandni
aur thodi der me thak ke laut jaayegi
raat ye bahaar ki phir kabhi na aayegi
do ek pal aur hai ye samaan
sun ja dil ki daastaan

hmm hmm
he lahron ke hothon pe
lahron ke hothon pe dheema dheema raag hai
lahron ke hothon pe
bheegi hawaaon me thandi thandi aag hai
is haseen aag me tu bhi jal ke dekh le
zindagi ke geet ki dhun badal ke dekh le
khulne de ab dhadkanon ki jubaan
sunja dil ki daastaan

he jaati bahaarein hain
jaati bahaarein hain lut’ti jawaaniyaan
jaati bahaarein hain
taaron ki chaaon me keh le kahaaniyan
ek baar chal diye gar tujhe pukaar ke
laut kar na aayenge kaafile bahaar ke
ek baar chal diye gar tujhe pukaar ke
laut kar na aayenge kaafile bahaar ke
aaja abhi zindagi hai jawaan
sunja dil ki daastaan
ye raat ye chaandni phir kahan
sunja dil ki daastaan
dastaan
dastaan

ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan
sun jaa dil ki daastan

chaandni raaten pyaar ki baaten
kho gayin jaane kahaan
chaandni raaten pyaar ki baaten
kho gayin jaane kahaan
ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan
sun jaa dil ki daastan

aati hai sadaa teri
toote huye taaron se
aahat teri sunti hoon
khaamosh nazaaron se
bheegi hawaa oodi ghata
kehti hai teri kahaani
tere liye bechain hai
sholon mein lipti jawaani
seene mein bal khaa rahaa hai dhuaan
sun jaa dil ki daastan
ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan
sun jaa dil ki daastan
chaandni raaten pyaar ki baaten
kho gayi jaane kahaan

lehron ke labon par hain
khoye huye afsaane
gulzaar umeedon ke
sab ho gaye veeraane
tera pataa paaun kahaan
soone hain saare thhikaane
jaane kahaan gum ho gaye
jaake wo agley zamaane
barbaad hai aarzu ka jahaan
sun jaa dil ki daastaan
sun jaa dil ki daastaan
sun jaa dil ki daastaan

One more old favorite of mine! Thanks, Atul! Hemant’s soothing voice, great lyrics and a soothing melody, definitely the chayageet category. Keep up the good work, Atul!

This song is highlight of Hemant’s songs. That nadi ka kinara, surroundings,Geeta Bali’s tadap. All are mesmarising. Moreover a DASHING Dev Anand with guitar.

This song brought two great music directors to work to gather. Both versions are equally good .In the fast rythem Hemantda has sung very well and slow version Lata Mangeshkar is equally good. Probably this was the beginning of and era when Navketan, S D Burman,Sahir Luthianvi came to gather and hemant Kumar became Ikon of Devanand’s playback singer.

A mesmerisimg song which can be heard again and again. Hemantda’s rendering of the song has given it a magical touch. No doubt the lyrics and music are also top class.

Hemant da is just brilliant! This is such a good example that a song to be sensual, it need not be vulgar. Subtlety is such a key that has disappeared these days :(. Thank you Atul Ji!
