Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Tum mujh ko bhool jaao.. ab ham na mil sakenge

Posted on: February 24, 2009

In my series of songs from “Badi Bahan”, here is the fifth song. This is a sad song, and this song really made me feel sad, that is how emphatic I found this song.

The words “tum mujhe bhool jaao ab ham na mil sakenge” actually had my heart sinking. I know, I know, that it is just a song in what is just a movie, but this song has the effect of getting its listeners empathise with the lyrics of the song.

Sung by Suraiyya, this song was written by Qamar jalalabadi and the immortal music of this movie was composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

I have already mentioned it, and let me mention it again, “Badi Bahan” is a movie where every song was a super duper hit evergreen song. And this song (fifth from this movie in this blog) is no exception.

Song-Tum mujh ko bhool jaao.. ab ham na mil sakenge (Badi Bahan) (1949) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram

Lyrics

tum mujh ko bhool jaao
tum mujh ko bhool jaao, ab ham na mil sakenge
ab ham na mil sakenge
daali se phool toote
daali se phool toote, ab kaise khil sakenge
ab kaise khil sakenge
tum mujh ko bhool jaao
tum mujh ko bhool jaao

ik roz to chakori, dekhegi chaand pyaaraa
ik roz to milegaa, har lahar ko kinaaraa
ham dekhte rahenge
ham dekhte rahenge, ro ro ke ye kahenge
ab ham na mil sakenge
ab ham na mil sakenge
tum mujh ko bhool jaao
tum mujh ko bhool jaao

shahanaayiaan bajengi aur dulhanen sajengin
haathon mein mal ke mehandi, saajan ke ghar chalengin
ham dekhte rahenge
ham dekhte rahenge, ro ro ke ye kahenge
ab ham na mil sakenge
ab ham na mil sakenge
tum mujh ko bhool jaao
tum mujh ko bhool jaao
ab ham na mil sakenge
ab ham na mil sakenge

All the songs in this movie are great. I think one of the reasons they still stand out is the fact that the instruments do not interfere with the singer, they get muted and we listen to just the singer’s voice when he or she is singing, and the music stays where it belongs, between the verses, unlike the songs these days, where the instruments practically drown out the singer’s voice.

You can then get the full impact of the sorrow or happiness in the singer’s voice. You can listen to the words and empathize with the characters fully. I was practically in tears listening to this song last night. Give me old songs any day. Thanks for finding these songs, Atul.

I must say I have not heard this song before.
In fact when I saw the title I mistakenly thought it was “tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao to ye haq hai tumko, meri baat aur hai maine to mohabbat ki hai” – an old Mukesh classic.

But listening to this now for the first time, I really like this song very much. So much emotion in the voice, it is amazing.

Raja, I don’t think I listened to it when I was in India, it was only after I left India and started collecting cassettes of old Hindi songs that I came to know so many old songs. Of course, I am discovering many songs that I had almost completely forgotten and now I am finding them in these columns, thanks to Atul. As I said before, give me these old gems anyday.
