Hindi movie songs are reputed to be sung by the hero and heroine while running around trees. But what happens when the lady has injured herself and is unable to even walk, let alone run ? Does the hero abandon her and runs around trees with some other lady ? Not if the hero is Sunil Dutt. Sunil Dutt is one hero who would take care of his ladies in their moments of need.
Here is a song from “Aaj Aur kal” (1963) in which Sunil Dutt is shown with a wheel chair bound Nanda. Instead of letting her sit door, he takes her outdoors and cheers her up by this inspirational song that tells her that the natural sights of the world are beckoning her.
I have been listening to this song for ages, but it is just a few hours ago that I finally managed to gather the information about this song. All these days I was totally unaware about the details of this song.
This song, which is one of the many iconic songs created by Ravi during his long and illustrious career is sung by Rafi. The lyrics are written by the one and only Sahir Ludhianvi who had had a long and fruitful association with Ravi for nearly two decades.
The song ends abruptly, what with Sunil Dutt moving back towards a dangerous precipice. Nanda watches him take backward steps with apprehension, and she does not know how to warn him. The song ends abruptly with Nanda, forgetting that her leg is broken, stands up on her feet, with Sunil Dutt getting dangerously unbalanced on the edge of the cliff.
What happens next ! I have not watched the movie and I desperately tried to find out, but it appears that the details about the story of this movie is not available anywhere. So, I request my readers, who may have watched this movie, to tell me what happened next. The suspense is killing me.

After watching the abrupt end of the song, I went to your blog to see if you had reviewed it. Unfortunately this movie is not yet reviewed. Perhaps you may consider advancing the DVD of this movie forward in your queue of movies to be watched and reviewed ?

Ha ha, I did move it up—to the very top in fact. Am about halfway through it and really like it so far, it is interesting. Great cast too. So I will def. let you know what happens soon!

this movie has a story based in the times when India was still ruled by the British. Nanda Tanuja (playing sisters here) and Deven Verma form the heirs to princely states Ashok Kumar is the father of the girls who can’t except that the kins ve to make do with “privy purse”. Sunil Dutt is a social reformist who is initially appreciated by Ashok Kumar so much so he has free access into the palace right upto Nanda’s room so thats when love blossoms between the 2. Tanuja plays a sort of playfull childish character. she has a nice song in the movie with Deven Verma giving her company— “Raja Saheb Ghar Nahin Humko Kisika Dar Nahin Aaj Toh ????? Uthake Kahenge Sau Sau Baar”
ve seen this movie as a kid in the days of DoorDarshan. don’t remember how the movie ended– I think Nanda starts walking in the end, gets married to Sunil Dutt etc etc etc etc

A very lovely idea–I like this song primarily because of that.
And Sunil Dutt was a good man both on and off-screen and so one appreciates him in these kinds of songs.
And if all this had not been explained by you all, I would have just listened to the tune (Hindi is still an effort–I really have to listen to figure out what they are saying in the songs. Otherwise they are just undigested words.)

I love this song. In fact this movie has lovely songs.
I am upset at myself.
I was at a music shop the other day and picked up lots of VCDs and one DVD. I finally picked up 22 but I had about 50 shortlisted. Aaj Aur Kal was shortlisted. Then I quickly did a final selection – and I realise now Aaj Aur Kal is not in my 22. I am pretty sure I really wanted to see this, so it was definitely an oversight. I need to go to a music shop again and pick this one up.
Not expecting anything dramatic in the story but I like Sunil Dutt a lot, esp in the 1960s. And the songs are very good.

So I watched the film, and Sunil Dutt plays a doctor who is called by Nanda’s father the Maharaja (Ashok Kumar) to cure her—she has not been able to walk for some five years despite lots of medicine etc.
As Peevsie’s Mom says, he sings this song and deliberately goes near the edge and pretends to almost fall in order to get Nanda onto her feet. It works, and he doesn’t really fall, and she’s cured.

a small rectification :
Mukhda – 2nd line
Khamoshiyoon ki sadaayien……
I dont know if u r aware or not… but urdu poetry especially shair’s as such were written with perfect wieghtage of words in both lines. Hence , here the word used is ‘khamoshiyon ‘ and not ‘khaamoshiyon’ meaning same, silences.
Also in 2nd stanza, i am not sure if the word was zulfon or just ‘zulf’. I think it was the later with slight emphasis on the last letter, i.e. ‘ f ‘.
I also remember seeing this movie on doordarshan, with its socialist overtones.

This is one of my favorite songs in Hindi cinema (so far)…I adore it, even without much understanding what the lyrics say. Rafi’s voice is just so….divine 🙂
