“Agra Road” (1957) was produced and directed by Ravindra Dave for Nagina Films, Bombay. This crime movie had Shakila, Vijay Anand, Nanda, Bhagwan, Satish Vyas, Amarnath, Krishnkant, Dhumal, Nazi etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it. Seven songs from the movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the eighth song from “Agra Road” (1957) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi, Geeta Dutt , Shamshad Begam and chorus. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan. The song is picturised as a stage dance performance song. I can identify Shakila and Nanda among the performers, whereas Vijay Anand and others can be seen among those watching the performance. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the others visible in the picturisation.

The audio quality of the song is poor. I am in fact not able to detect the voice of Shamshad Begam in the song and I take it in good faith that Shamshad Begam’s voice is there in the song because it says so in HFGK.

There may be mistakes in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections wherever applicable in the lyrics.

Lyrics

dor sachchaai ki duniya mein
kabhi na sakti toot
ghada paap ka bhar jaata tab
khud hi jaata phoot
gunaahon ka chiraag kabhi jal na sakega
paapiyon ka paap kabhi phal na sakega
chiraag jal na sakega

chiraag jal na sakega
ye paap phal na sakega
chiraag jal na sakega

ek baar tum bajaa lo danke apni jeet ke
danke apni jeet ke
ek baar tum bajaa lo saaz apne geet ke
saaz apne geet ke
ek baar tum bujha do deep chaahe preet ke
paaon tik sakenge nahin is tumhaari reet ke

is tumhaari reet ke
satya ka ye surya kabhi dhhal na sakega
paapiyon ka paap kabhi phal na sakega
chiraag jal na sakega

chiraag jal na sakega
ye paap phal na sakega
ye surya dhhal na sakega

chhal kapat bhara hua hai jinki chaal dhaal mein
jinki chaal dhaal mein
ban ke bhed ghoomte jo bhediye ki khaal mein
bhediye ki khaal mein
ho rahe hain khush jo apne mast haal mein
ek din wo khud bakhud phansenge apne jaal mein

phansenge apne jaal mein
unka sharmnaak ant tal na sakega
paapiyon ka paap kabhi phal na sakega
chiraag jal na sakega

chiraag jal na sakega
ye paap phal na sakega
ye ant tal na sakega

gunaahon ka chiraag kabhi jal na sakega

The saga starts in 1947. It is the runaway hit “Afsaana Likh Rahi Hoon Dil e Beqraar Ka” (film ‘Dard’). Not many artists can lay claim to such a meteoric debut. And also, not many can pride themselves with unbroken partnerships and associations with other artists, that have lasted for an entire lifetime.

For a soft and lovely and romantic expression, it probably does not get better than this delightful ghazal. The words, the music, and the rendition – all have come together to craft this wonderful expression of bashful love. Love, that wants to say many things, but remains un-speaking, when presented with the opportunity. The anxiety and hesitations tie the tongue, and the moments pass by without a word being said. Shakeel Sb has so beautifully painted the words around this emotion. Each couplet is a priceless gem. I am bowled over with how the words are knitted together.

un ko dekha to manzil samajh kar
ruk gaya karvaan un ke aage

It is well past 3.00 in the night (early hours of the 18th of July) as I start to write this post for the blog. I’m tired, my eyes are almost closing, I know I should be going to sleep – but the mind is rebelling and urging me on. It is saying “Go on, you can do it, you need to do it. You need to write a post, however tired you are, however badly the post comes out. You cannot let him down. Not on his death anniversary.”

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 1

‘अ’

Celebrating another year without Rafi Sb, celebrating another anniversary of this peerless artist. And more than anything else, celebrating another year of endless memories and ruminations.  God does not duplicate, they say. And so, for us listeners, memories is all that is there to live by.

As has been mentioned in the earlier posts of the day, today (19 july 2015) is the seventh birth anniversary of this blog. One single article was posted on the first day of the blog in 2008. The blog remained one song a day blog for the first forty days and then we began to post several articles every day. Today, seven year later, the blog has well over elevent thousand songs. If one takes an average, it turns out to be an average of 4.5 songs per day. Come to think of it, maintaining this daily strike rate for seven years is quite an achievement.

No other month begins with a day that is named after itself.  It is only the month of May that starts with a day that is called May Day.  Historically, this specific day has a long history of cultural and social significance.  A history that goes back to pre-Christ era.  The Romans used to celebrate this day as a spring festival.  The festival was called Floralia, in the honor of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.  Further north, in Germany, this day was celebrated as Walburgis Night.  Coinciding with the arrival of summer weather in the European continent, this day was also celebrated as the first day of summer in some regions.  Community fairs were held, with the traditional dancing around the Maypole, and the beauty contest to select and crown the ‘Queen of May’.  People used to distribute anonymous gifts, called May Baskets, in their neighborhoods.
