Basti basti parwat parwat gaataa jaaye banjaaraa

Posted on: October 25, 2010

This song is a very well known song. In fact it is an iconic song. All these days I thought that I had already discussed this song, but surprise, surprise, this song had eluded discussion in this blog all these days. Obviously I had discussed this song in my other blog and not here.

Though this song is a very well known song, there were still many things that I did not know about this song. For instance, this song plays in the movie more than once. The movie begins with this song, and begins in a train. That way, this song belongs to two of the most well loved categories, viz it is a “movie opening song” as well as a rail song.

For the majority of the song, we listen to the song, while the credits roll on the screen. While the song and the credits come to an end, we are shown a glimpse of the inside of a coach of the train. The coach is full of passengers. One of them is Manmohan Krishna who is lip syncing this song. The camera moved in front of him and shows us the first glimpse of Sunil Dutt. Yes, this movie, and this shot is the very first shot of Sunil Dutt in a Hindi movie. And what a wonderful career he has after that !

This discussion is about the song “basti basti parwat parwat” though. The same song, with different words also gets played afterwards. This time the song is picturised on Manmohan Krishna and Nalini Jaiwant.

This song is sung by Rafi and it is written by Sahir Ludhianvi. Madan Mohan is the music director. That way, it is one of those rare songs with this combination. Though Madan Mohan paid great attention to the lyrics of his songs, he worked with Sahir sparingly, viz in this movie and in “Ghazal” (1964). In most of his movies, he worked with other wordsmiths, namely Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Rajinder Krishan, Kaifi Azmi etc.

They may have worked together sparingly, but the quality of their collaboration is there for all to see. So here is this iconic song from “Railway Platform” (1955) which to my mind is a very significant song for the reasons mentioned above.

The movie has two versions (happy and sad) sung by Rafi. In addition, this song has a version sung by Manmohan Krishna too (as mentioned by myswar).

Lyrics

Part I

basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa

pal do pal kaa saath hamaaraa
pal do pal ki yaari
aaj ruke to kal karni hai chalane ki taiyaari
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa

qadam-qadam par honi baithhi
apnaa jaal bichhaaye
qadam-qadam par honi baithhi
apnaa jaal bichhaaye
is jeewan ki raah mein jaane
kaun kahaan rah jaaye
kaun kahaan rah jaaye
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa

dhan-daulat ke peechhe kyun hai
ye duniyaa deewaani
yahaan ki daulat yahaan rahegi
saath nahin ye jaani
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa

———————————–

Part II

sone chaandi mein tulata ho
jahaan dilon ka pyaar
aansoo bhi bekaar wahaan par
aahen bhi bekaar

basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa

duniyaa ke baazaar mein
aakhir chaahat bhi vyaapaar bani
duniyaa ke baazaar mein
aakhir chaahat bhi vyaapaar bani
tere dil se unke dil tak
chaandi ki deewaar bani
chaandi ki deewaar bani
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa

ham jaison ke bhaag mein likhaa
chaahat kaa wardaan nahin
ham jaison ke bhaag mein likhaa
chaahat kaa wardaan nahin
jisne hamko janam diyaa
wo patthar hai Bhagwaan nahin
wo patthar hai Bhagwaan nahin
wo patthar hai Bhagwaan nahin
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa
basti-basti parwat-parwat
gaataa jaaye banjaaraa
lekar dil kaa iktaaraa

I
I would like to share some informations with my fellow readers that the originally the song was recorded in the voice of Manmohan Krishna ji who happened to be a good singer. Later on it was recorded or dubbed
in Rafi saab’s voice. Manmohan Krishna used to anchor a musical programme called “Cadbury Phoolwari” on Radio Ceylon.I was a participant playing ‘bul bul Tarang’
