5069 Post No. : 16988

Today 4th June 2022 is the 86th birth anniversary of actress Nutan, or I must say one of greatest and finest actress of Hindi Cinema. She is undoubtedly my most favorite actress from Hindi movies.

Nutan was born on 4th June 1936 and passed away on 21st February 1991.

Today, in this post I am not going to discuss here detailed biography, but I would only like to list some of her movies which I get to watched till date. I might be forgetting some which I would have watched with elders in the family when I was a child.

I will start with the movie ‘Saraswatichandra-1968’. I still remember that as a child learning in 7th or 8th standard when I get to watch the movie ‘Saraswatichandra (1968)’ (in black and white) during the weekly screening of movies at our colony club we were staying then.

After watching this movie, I have never forgotten this face and the song ‘phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein’. There was a girl in our class having same face cut as that of Nutan, and that girl remained my crush forever thereafter.

Around the same period that is 1976 to 1983 I get to watch her ‘Dil Hi To Hai’, ‘Kanhaiyya’ ‘Chhalia’ in our colony club.

I think I had also watched ‘Anuraag’ and ‘Yaadgaar’ with my parents.

I do not remember correctly but I must have watched ‘Baarish’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Seema’ ‘Manzil’, ‘Anari’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Saudagar’, ‘Meri Jung’ on TV.

I watched her ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ many times and that remained one of my ‘all-time favorite movies’. First I watched it on Video cassettes and later-on on TV channels.

I watched her ‘Khaandaan’, ‘Milan’, ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’, ‘Karma’, and ‘Naam’ during my stay at Parli Vaijnath (1985-1988). I had bought the VCD of ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’ recently (2004-2010).

I may be forgetting some movies which I might have watched. But whatever movies of her I watched I had always likened her roles and her acting. I think she was the most gracious and admired and respected heroine of her times.

Today on her birth anniversary I am presenting a song picturised on her in the movie ‘Meharbaan’. I have yet to watch this movie.

“Meharbaan-1967” was directed by A. Bhim Singh for ‘A.V.M., Madras’. It was produced by A.V. Meiyappan. It had Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Mehmood, Sudesh Kumar, Bhalla, Shaymlal, Jankidas, Umesh Sharma, Ramavtaar, Rajkishore, Mukri, Sulochana, Shashikala, Shyama, Raj Mehra, Ramesh Deo, Ashim Kumar, Kumari Padma, Master Levi, Jayanthi, Bharathi and others.

Here is a brief about this movie as taken from ‘Wikipedia’,

Shanti Swarup (Ashok Kumar), a wealthy businessman, lives with his three sons Ram, Shyam, and Sunder; his wife Parvati (Sulochana Latkar); widowed daughter Devki (Shashikala): unmarried daughter Geeta; and adopted orphan Kanhaiya.

Kanhaiya (Sunil Dutt) is raised as Shanti Swarup’s family member and he in return is very dedicated to this family, especially his adopters – Shanti and Parvati. They come across Laxmi (Nutan) whose parents, known to the Swarups, died and so they also bring Laxmi into their family. Parvati wants Sunder to marry Laxmi, but Sunder wants to marry his lover, Rachna. Through a dramatic twist of events, Kanhaiya marries Laxmi and Sundar marries Rachna. Shanti arranges for Geeta to marry Ramesh, the son of his friend Lala Karamchand. Financial losses cause Shanti to lose all his wealth. Ram and Shyam refuse to help him at all, and Karamchand cancels the impending marriage. Kanhaiya and Laxmi leave the house due to the instance of Shanti to make him self-dependent and also ill-treatment by his sons. But they are given shelter by Laxmi’s long-lost brother Madhu (Mehmood) who doesn’t reveal his identity to Laxmi. Disheartened, depressed and unable to face anyone, Shanti dies. Even as his palatial house is to be auctioned by Karamchand, who is voracious, a devastated Parvati is on her deathbed as she cannot think of living anywhere else, and only a miracle can save the now ruined family, but Kanhaiya saves Karamchands son Ramesh from a car accident. Thus, Karamchand gives the palatial house in favor of Kanhaiya and on turn reunites with the family and fulfils the wishes of Shanti Swaroop.

“Meharbaan-1967” had seven songs written by Rajinder Krishan. Following is the list of songs as mentioned in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970).

Let us now listen to today’s song …

Song-Saari duniya mein dekhe hain do anpadh naadaan (Meharbaan)(1967) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Saari duniya mein dekhe hain
Do anpadh naadaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan
Saari duniya mein dekhe hain
Do anpadh naadaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan

Jisne ye sansaar banaaya
Bolo kisne usey padhaaya
Jisne ye sansaar banaaya
Bolo kisne usey padhaaya
Duniya ko sikhlaane waala
Kiske ghar se seekh ke aaya
Is par bhi wo naam ka bhola
Baante sabko gyaan
Baante sabko gyaan
Saari duniya mein dekhe hain
Do anpadh naadaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan

Kahaan padhe ye chaand sitaare
Jo dete jag ko ujiyaare
Kahaan padhe ye chaand sitaare
Jo dete jag ko ujiyaare
Us gyaani se moorakh achha
Jo duniya ke kaam sanwaare
Paas hai jiske dhan sewa ka
Wo sachchaa dhanwaan
Wo sachchaa dhanwaan
Saari duniya mein dekhe hain
Do anpadh naadaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan

Jo apne bal ko pehchaane
Haar kisi se kyun wo maane
Jo apne bal ko pehchaane
Haar kisi se kyun wo maane
Karm ko apne dharam jo samjhe
Kaun aayega usey jhukaane
Chhod udaasi kahe ye daasi
O bhole insaan
O bhole insaan
Saari duniya mein dekhe hain
Do anpadh naadaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan
Ik tum dooje bhagwaan

5059 Post No. : 16973

Today 25th May’2022 is Remembrance Day of actor Sunil Dutt (born as Balraj Dutt, 6 June 1929 — 25 May 2005).

Sunil Dutt was active in ‘films’ around us when I was growing up in seventies. I remember to have watched his ‘black & white’ movies like ‘Ek Phool Chaar Kaante’, ‘Main Chup Rahoongi’, ‘Beti Bete’, ‘Gaban’, and movies like ‘Padosan’ and ‘Reshma Aur Shera’ in our colony club when I was a child. I do not remember correctly but I think I had also watched his ‘Post Box no.999’ as well.

Then I have vague memories of watching some of his movies with my parents, or brothers and cousins, and /or elders (like my Uncle) in the family. These are movies like ‘Sadhu Aur Shaitan’, ‘Heera’, ‘Himalay Se Ooncha’, ‘Nagin’, ‘Nehle Pe Dehla’, ‘Shaan’, ‘Yaari Dushmani’, etc.

I watched ‘Jaani Dushman’ alone as my Dad gave me ‘conditional permission’ that I will not take my younger brothers to watch the movie with me. (But the permission came only after I was punished 🙂 the day before it. I had mentioned this episode in my post on the movie ‘Jaani Dushman’.)

As a child we were always interested in watching movies irrespective of the star cast and I enjoyed watching all the above movies.

I get to watch his ‘Rocky’, ‘Dard Ka Rishta’, ‘Raaj Tilak’, ‘Watan Ke Rakhwaale’ ‘Mother India’, ‘Gumraah’, ‘Hamraaz’, ‘Mera Saaya’, ‘Insaan Jaag Uttha’, ‘Amrapali’, ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, ‘Waqt’, ‘Khandan’ (these I watched during the years from 1983 to 1988. I passed out matriculation in 1983, stayed Akola with my grandparents for my study (but actually playing cricket and watching movies than focusing on studies. From 1985 to 1988 I was staying at Parli Vaijnath (Maharashtra)).

The movies I mentioned above are not appearing in their chronological order of release.

From the above movies, I remember I had watched ‘Padosan’ again in later years also on VCR, TV and online.

In the recent years I had watched his ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ in 2006 in Kachchh. And very recently I watched his ‘Aaj Aur Kal’ online in 2017 when I was in Kenya.

I have not watched today’s movie which is ‘Meharbaan-1967’.

“Meharbaan-1967” was directed by A. Bhim Singh for ‘A.V.M., Madras’. It was produced by A.V. Meiyappan.

It had Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Mehmood, Sudesh Kumar, Bhalla, Shaymlal, Jankidas, Umesh Sharma, Ramavtaar, Rajkishore, Mukri, Sulochana, Shashikala, Shyama, Raj Mehra, Ramesh Deo, Ashim Kumar, Kumari Padma, Master Levi, Jayanthi, Bharathi and others.

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi and on screen Sunil Dutt is performing on this song. Also seen in the picturisation of this song are Ashok Kumar, Bharati, Padma Khanna, Nutan, Sulochana and many others.

Let us listen to today’s song and pay our tributes to Sunil Dutt.

Song-Aayegaa aayegaa ik chhail chhabeela aayegaa (Meharbaan)(1967) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
Ik din jo meri chhoti si
Gudiya ko le jaayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega

Bhool ja bachpan ki rang raliyaan
Aaye din sharmaane ke
Bhool ja bachpan ki rang raliyaan
Aaye din sharmaane ke
Chhod ke roti sang saheli
Saajan ke ghar jaane ke
Chaahe ghabraaye
Chaahe muhkdaa chhupaaye
Aane waala to aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega

Laakh chhupa le humse lekin
Chaal teri ye kehti hai
Laakh chhupa le humse lekin
Chaal teri ye kehti hai
Soorat ik albele ki
Teri ankhiyon mein rehti hai
Kaisi bal khaaye
Yahi aas lagaaye
Kab aane waala aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
haan
Aa

Do din ka ab tera basera
Baabul ke is aangan mein
Do din ka ab tera basera
Baabul ke is aangan mein
Kaisa hoga desh piya ka
Jaagi hai chinta man mein
Chain na aaye
Yahi soch sataaye
Ab aane waala aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabila aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabila aayega

Ik din jo meri chhoti si
Gudiya ko le jaayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega
Aayega aayega
Ik chhail chhabeela aayega

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 17? # Himalay Se Oonchaa-1975 #
————————————————————

‘Himaalaya Se Oonchaa-1975’ was produced by Baboo Mehra and directed by B.S. Thapa for ‘Prakash Mehra Combine, Bombay’.

It had Sunil Dutt, Mallika Sarabhai, Ranjeet, Rakesh Pande, Shiv Kumar, Raju, Bittoo, Nandita Thakur, Achala Sachdev, Sanjana, Ram Mohan, Goga, Yunus Parvez, Sunder, Randhir, Mac Mohan, Jayraj, Karan Deewan, M. Rajan, Kumud Tripathi, Amrit Pal, Narayan, R. P. Sethi, Jankidas, Bhola, Gulshan Bawra, Yograj, B.M. Vyas, B.B. Bhalla, Kirti Kumar, Rajan Kapoor and others. Dev Kumar, Gautam Sarin and Aruna Irani had a friendly appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Mohan Kaul. He also co-authored the screenplay writing with Satish Bhatnagar.
Dialogues for this movie were written by Satish Bhatnagar.

Editing of this movie was done by R.D. Mahadik.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 15.04.1975.

This movie had four songs written by Indeevar (three songs) and Anjaan (one song). Music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Kanchan and Shivangi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Following is the list of songs this movie had (as given on the movie-page of this movie in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980)).

SNo Title of the Song Lyricist Singer/s Posted On the blog
01 Ho… ooparwaale ajab teri maaya Indeevar Manna Dey, chorus
02 O saathi re… pyaar jise kehte hai ik baar kiya jaata hai Indeevar Lata Mangeshkar Being discussed today
03 Raahi o raahi …tere sar pe duaaon ke saaye rahe Indeevar Lata Mangeshkar, chorus 01.06.2013
04 Thhithum… arey kahaan gayaa kidhar gayaa Anjaan Kanchan, Baby Shivangi

I vaguely remember to have watched this movie in my childhood with either my brothers & cousins, or my uncles. I had a big nostalgia of the song ‘raahi o raahi’ from this movie, and when I became a member of this blog, I had shared this song then in 2013. The video of this song was not available then. However, in the recent years the songs of this movie and the movie itself has been made available on internet by enthusiastic music and film lovers. I had in my memory a scene from this movie and that is about some snowy mountains and Sunil Dutt carrying his brothers on his shoulders. I have to watch this movie again to clear my doubt (of some ‘miracle’ happening in the movie?), I am leaving that to be discussed in a separate post in the future.

Today 27th February’2022 is the twenty-fifth ‘Remembrance anniversary’ (1 January 1924 – 27 February 1997) of ‘Shyamlal Babu Rai’ who is popularly know to us as ‘lyricist Indeevar’. As a tribute to him I am presenting a song from ‘Himaalay Se Oonchaa-1975’, which will be the second song from this movie to be posted on the blog after 01.06.2013 (when the first song was posted). Though lyrics of the today’s song were also noted around the same time in 2013 it somehow remains to be posted on the blog.

Today’s song is in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar and it is lip synced by Mallika Sarabhai. Sunil Dutt is also seen in the picturization of this song.

Music for this movie is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. And as mentioned above lyrics for today’s song is written by Indeevar.

Let us now listen to today’s song …

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 154 # (Actress Reena Roy’s birth anniversary)
——————————————

Today 7th January’2022 is the 65th birthday of actress Reena Roy (born on 07th January’1957).

In my growing years,(the seventies) and further in eighties she was one of the leading actresses in Bollywood.

I got to watch many of her movies in my growing years and later when I was a grown-up boy.

I have earlier written an article on her birthday on the blog. I am not going to repeat the same again. I liked her performance in all the movies which I have watched of her so far. I love to watch her movies whenever I get a chance or whenever they are played on TV channels.

The discussion on the movies of the ‘decade of seventies’ is incomplete without the mention of this actress and her films. We are not going to discuss the list of her movies in this article. She had been a part of many prominent movies of the ‘seventies’ and ‘early eighties.’ And today’s movie is one of her prominent movies from the end-seventies.

Today’s movie is ‘Jaani Dushman-1979’.

“Jaani Dushman-1979’ was directed by Raj Kumar Kohli for his home productions ‘Shankar Movies, Bombay’.

Raj Kumar Kohli was also the producer of this movie.

The movie had a long list of star cast like Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Neeta Mehta, Shobhini Singh, Roopesh Kumar, Madan Puri, Shakti, Anwar Hussain, Amrish Puri, Murad, Sulochana, Jayshree T., Indrani Mukherji, Aarti, Sheetal, Raza Murad, Jagdeep, Paintal Mac Mohan, Ram Soni, Maruti and a long list of other artists.

Vinod Mehra, Vikram, Prem Nath, Rekha, Neetu Singh, Bindiya Goswami, Sarika make special appearance in this movie.

Yogeeta Bali and Aruna Irani make a guest appearance in this movie.

And actor Jeetendra make a ‘above-all – special appearance’ in this movie.

Screenplay of this movie was written by Charandas Shokh, and Jaggi Ram Pal. Story Idea of this movie was by Hakim Lata.

Dialogues in this movie were written by Inder Raj Anand. Editing of this movie was done by Shyam and he was assisted by Kishan and Kalyan.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.04.1979 under ‘A’ certificate.

This movie had six songs written by Verma Malik and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Anuradha, and Shatrughan Sinha had given their voices to the songs of this movie.

Following is the list of songs of this movie.

SNo. Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Chalo re doli uthhaao kahaar Mohd Rafi 31.07.2019
02 O meri jaan bol meri jaan Kishore Kumar, Anuradha 28.11.2015
03 Tere haathon mein pahna ke choodiyaan Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, chorus 28.12.2008
04 Saare rishtey naate tod ke aa gayi Lata Mangeshkar Being discussed today
05 Sun bhai saadho, bol re maadho Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor, chorus 24.07.2018
06 Aisi waisi naa samajh sajanaa Asha Bhonsle, Shatrughan Sinha

We can see from the above table that four songs of this movie have already been posted on the blog earlier. This movie started its journey on the blog in the initial period of the blog viz in 2008- the first year of the blog.

However, the second song from this movie had to wait for almost seven years and it was posted on 28.11.2015. This movie again got overlooked and its third and fourth songs were posted on the blog on 24.07.2018 & 31.07.2019 respectively. Its after another ‘more than two-years’ gap that the fifth song from this movie is being discussed on the blog.

I wish to see this movie in the ‘Yippeeee-land’ and that is the reason I selected a song from this movie. Earlier I was looking for a new movie to be introduced on the blog and had almost finalized a song from it. But now let us help 😊 ‘Jaani-Dushman’ to a step closer to ‘Yippeeee-land’.

Today’s song is the sole Lata Mangeshkar song in this movie. This is also a solo song.
On screen it is Reena Roy lip-syncing the song and we can see Sunil Dutt in the picturisation of this song with Reena Roy.

Wishing Reena Roy, a ‘very happy birthday’ and a ‘healthy’ and ‘peaceful’ life ahead, let us now listen to the today’s song.

The available video of this song is a partial one and the audio version is having full song.

Over to the song now …

Song-Duniya ki kitaabon se ik din (Jwaala)(1970) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega aa aa
yeah

duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega
insaan ke iraadon ke aage
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega

hum apni lagan ke deewaane
toofaan se bhi takra jaayenge
ab jhuk na sakenge ae duniya
hum toot bhale hi jaayenge
ho ho ho o
o o o o
jeevan ki dagar ka har parwat
ik thokar mein uad jaayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega
yeah

samjho na hamen tum patthar dil
seene mein hamaare pyaar bhi hai
naaz kisi kisi ki yaad bhi hai
ik sapnon ka sansar bhi hai
aa ha ha ha
aa aa aa aa
jo kuchh bhi haseen hai is jag mein
kuchh aur haseen kahlayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega

har har bandhan ko tod ke jab
ik jashn manaayegi duniya
taaron ke singhaashan par jis din
insaan ko dikhaayegi duniya
ho ho ho
o o o o o
us din sabko rah rah ke mera
ye geet bahut yaad aayega
insaan ke iraadon ke aage
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega

Hullo Atuldom

“Mehrban” (1967) as spelt in the titles of the movie was an AVM (Madras) production written and directed by A. Bhimsingh. It’s cast was headed by Ashok Kumar, Nutan, Sunil Dutt and had Ramesh Deo, Shyama, Ashim kumar, Jayanthi, Shashikala, Bharathi, Mehmood, Soodesh Kumar and Sulochana Latkar. The dialogues and lyrics were written by Rajinder Kishan and Ravi was the music director. The movie had seven songs of which the blog has the following two.

Song Date of posting
Ae mere dost ae mere hamdam 21 January 2013
Mera gadha gadhon ka leader 9 December 2016

As we can see this movie last made its appearance in 2016 with a wonderful post by Rajaji who was pushed to write by Avinashji. Infact, for the both songs posted, Avinashji was the lyrics contributor.

The 2013 post had a brief synopsis of the movie. It equated the movie to the 1990 David Dhawan directed Rajesh Khanna- Govinda starrer “Swarg”. I happened to see “Mehrbaan” recently and realised that the similarity is limited. Yes, Rajesh Khanna played the rich-man in “Swarg” similar to Ashok Kumar’s character in “Mehrban”. Govinda played the orphan who is devoted to the family similar to Sunil Dutt’s character in “Mehrban”.

The variations in the 1967 movie is that the wealthy couple Shanti Swarup (Ashok Kumar) and Parvati (Sulochana) have three sons and two daughters in addition to being the adoptive parents of Kanhaiya (Sunil Dutt). (In “Swarg” the wealthy couple are childess) They also bring in Laxmi (Nutan) whose parents were known to them and who die leaving Laxmi to fend for herself. So, as we can see it is a full house. That gives the story all kinds of good, bad and ugly characters which helps the writer to gives us a three-hour long movie with lots of ‘rona-dhona’ ‘kasam khana and khilana’ etc. i.e. a highly emotional movie. The end is predictable in that all the family members come together and live happily, once again.

Just remembered another variation between “Swarg” and “Mehrban”. In “Swarg” Krishna (Govinda) becomes rich by acting in movies, buys back the property of his ‘sahabji’ (Rajesh Khanna) and teaches the errant brothers a lesson or two before bringing them back to apologise for all the wrongs that they have done. Kanhaiya of ‘Mehrban’ doesn’t wait to earn riches before coming back to set matters right in the adoptive family. Kanhaiya (Sunil Dutt) has Laxmi (whom he marries before being sent away from the home by Sulochana) for support whereas Krishna does it with the help of his friend ‘Airport’ (Satish Kaushik).
Also, in ‘Swarg’ Sahabji’s wife dies of shock and in ‘Mehrban’ Shanti Swarup dies leaving his wife to the mercy of his ungrateful children.

‘Swarg’ was said to be a remake of ‘Mehrban’ which itself was a remake from the 1960 Tamil hit ‘Padikkadha Medhai’ (Uneducated Genius) which in turn was a remake of the 1953 Bengali movie ‘Jog Biyog’ which was based on the novel of the same name by Ashapurna Devi. So, that means this story will hold good in any time and age.

We are revisiting this movie today with a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi but (surprise) it is not a romantic song. In fact, the movie doesn’t have any romantic song, in the true sense of the term. There is a Lata Mangeshkar solo which has Nutan pacifying a sad Sunil Dutt. This song relates the story of Shanti Swarup to his grandchildren.

This is one of five movies where Nutan and Sunil Dutt played the lead. As I was looking up the anniversaries tab of the blog I found that the birth-dates of the two were one day apart. I wondered what scenario it would have been, back then, when the shooting of the movies were on. Nutan would have turned 85 on 4th June and Sunil (birth-name Balraj) Dutt would have been 92. Just a passing thought, their sons are actors too and have acted together in a few movies.

Editor’s note-Lyrics of this song, which turns out to be a multiple version song, were sent by Avinash Scrapwala long ago.

jisne raja ko nirdhan banaya
ho gaye khaali saare khazaane ae
haaye kaisa ye andher chhaaya

woh jo bete thhe aankhon ke taare
raja rani ke dil sahaare
kaam aise mein woh bhi naa aaye
chhupte phirte the aankhen churaaye

aaram ke saathi kya kya the

dhan daulat ke sab rishtey hai
dhan rooth gaya toh koi nahin
kaun girte ko deta sahaara

sochta thha kahaan hai woh moti

ho gaya apna khoon paraaya
ho gaya apna khoon paraaya
kaam magar ek chaakar aaya
ek bhola insaan wahaan thha
bachpan se mehmaan wahaan thha
usne jiske tukde khaaye
sada usi ke paanv dabaaye
un bedardon ki mehfil mein
ek wahi hamdard bacha thha
lekin maalik ko kya deta
bechaare ke paas hi kya thha
bechaare ke paas hi kya thha

apne malik ke kadmon mein ro ro ke
khush hota charan uske dho dho ke
apna tan man nichhavar woh karta raha
ek ishaare pe malik ke marta raha
hai kahaani magar baat kal hi ki hai
na samjhna ise tum pura..aa..ni
ek raja ki sun lo kaha..aa..ni

Jo naa mitaaye mitegi kisi se
Chhodi hai aisi nishaani

Ek raja ki sunlo kahaani

Hullo Atuldom

12th February was the birthday of an Atulite. He has started a series to introduce missing movies of the ’70s, and just as well as movies of 70s will complete 50 years. It is unbelievable that movies that were part of our childhood are 50 years old.

‘Guddi’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Caravan’, ‘Anand’, ‘Anubhav’, ‘Parwana’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, etc all 1971 releases, all which I have seen multiple times. I am sure that these movies would be favourites of a majority of the followers of this blog.

There is one more movie that will complete 50 years this year. Its release date has been recorded on various internet sites as 1st July 1971, but the censor certificate has a date of 24th February 1970 i.e. exactly a year after its leading lady bade goodbye to this mortal world.

Madhubala- the beauty who charmed an entire generation of moviegoers. A beauty who had an infectious smile and near-musical laughter: – can anyone forget the laughter that precedes ‘haal kaisa hai janaab ka’ or the mischievous smile through ‘accha jee main haari chalo maan jaao na’ and ‘jaanu jaanu re chhupke kaun aaya tore angna’. Her eyes were so expressive. But write-ups about her say that she kept a low public profile and was not seen at film parties and premieres.

She was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi in Delhi on 14th February (which the world celebrates as valentine day in modern times) as fifth of eleven children to Ataullah Khan and Ayesha Begum. An out of work father first reached Delhi from Peshawar (now in Pakistan) and then to Bombay. A very young Mumtaz was first cast as a child actor in the 1942 release ‘Basant’ which was followed by ‘Mumtaz Mahal’,‘Phulwaari’, ‘Dhana Bhagat’, ‘Rajputaani’. Baby Mumtaz became Madhubala from “Neel Kamal” in 1947. It is said that baby Mumtaz and baby Mahjabeen became friends in the period they were child actors and grew up to be contemporaries – Madhubala and Meena Kumari. Madhubala is said to have been a fan of Meena and her voice.

Madhubala was one of the most popular, successful and highly paid actresses of the ‘50s and ’60s. She acted in 73 movies in a career spanning almost two decades though the ‘60s saw only five films of hers. She also produced three movie: – ‘Naata’ (1955), ‘Mehlonkekhwab’ (1960) and ‘Pathan’ (1962). She sang a song or two as baby Mumtaz in ‘Basant’. She was an enigma who was rarely seen at filmy functions or premieres, this was because she was an obedient daughter and submitted to the domination of her father. According to what Dilip Kumar has once said:- she was the only female star for whom crowds would gather at the gates of the studios where she was shooting. Many believe she was one of the most underrated actresses as her beauty attracted more attention than her talent. She was good at expressing a range of emotions through her eyes- comedy, pathos etc etc. In spite of being an iconic actress she never won any awards and was only nominated for her role in “Mughal-e-azam” but she reigned on the hearts of her fans.

She was unlucky in life and had a few heartbreaks before leaving this world and Kishore Kumar, whom she married in 1960, yearning for her. She died on 23rd February 1969 of congenital heart disease;an ailment for which there was no treatment when she was diagnosed in 1954 on the sets of a film being made in Madras. By the time heart surgeries were possible she was too weak to withstand and was confined to bed for nearly nine years. In 1966 she attempted to complete her part of work in the Raj Kapoor starrer “Chalaak” but that was also a strain for her fragile body. (Most of this information I have found on Wikipedia about an actress/ star who was on my dad’s list of favorites in those times).

The song with this post is from a movie that was shot sometime in the ‘50sand we have a very young Sunil Dutt romancing the princess “Jwala” (Madhubala). This movie is significant as it is the only movie of Madhubala that was shot in colour, “Mughal-e-azam” was partly in colour at the time of making, but “Jwala” was made as a colour movie. Sudhirji’s post gives us details about the movie which was essentially a ‘princess falling in love with a commoner who turns out to be a prince in exile’ story. Today’s song is written by Rajinder Krishan, tuned by Shankar -Jaikishan and sung by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar.

February was the month of Madhubala’s birth and she would have turned 88. It is also the month she left the world at 36. We, her fans, can only fantasize how she would have looked as an octogenarian.

4407 Post No. : 15795

Today (11 August 2020) happens to be Janmashtmi, the day Lord Krishna, the avatar of Lord Vishnu was born in the Dwapar Yug. His earlier avatar was in the Treata Yug and that was as Lord Ram, and the birthday of Lord Ram is called Ramnavami.

Lord Ram was a serious, sombre, idealism personifieed avatar of Lord Vishnu whereas Lord Krishna was a playful, more human like avatar. Playful and non serious he may be, but he meant business when the situation so demanded. And do not fiorget, it is Lord Vishnu, who gave us Bhagwatgeeta ka gyaan.

It should come as no surprise to note that Lord Krishna has been a favourite God of Hindi movies and there have been a good number of Lord Krishn related songs in Hindi movies.

On every Janmashtmi, we feature at least one Lord Krishn related song. The first janmashtmi of the blog saw the occasion getting celebrated with the popular song Shyaam teri bansi pukaare Radha naam (Geet Gaata Chal). Next janmashtmi in 2009 saw an out and out iconic janmashtmi song viz Govinda aal re aalaa zara matki sambhaal brijbaala (Bluffmaster) getting discussed.

If one thinks that we have run out of Lord Krishn related songs for this janmashtmi, now that it is the 13th janmashtmi occasiobn for the blog, one cannot be more wrong.

Here is a fantastic Lord Krishn related song from “Khaandan”(1965). This song is sung by Rafi and chorus. The song begins with a stuti, which sounds like the voice of Ravi to me. Lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan. Music is composed by Ravi, a ceator of iconic songs (my description for him).

The song is picturised on Sunil Dutt, with lots of other devotees engaged in the song and dance celebration, including Nutan, and Omprakash. It is Omprakash, who starts the bhajan singing the Sanskrit stuti.

Incidentally, some places in India celebrate Janmashtmi tomorrrow (12 August 2020), but UP people should know better, because Lord Krishn was born in these parts. :). According to UP calendars, it falls today. May be it falls in night, seeing that Lord Krishna was born at night.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 44
———————————————————————————–

Ten years back on this day , viz on 28th July 2010, the blog saw as many as six songs being represented as given below;

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Meri zindagi mein aate to kuchh aur baat hoti Kanyaadaan-1968 All songs covered

Out of the six movies represented on the blog on that day five movies viz. ‘Kanyaadaan-1968’, ‘Sehra-1963’, ‘Nau Do Gyaarah-1957’, ‘Mr and Mrs 55-1955’, and ‘Taxi Driver-1954’ all their songs have already been covered and they have already landed in ‘Yipeeeee’ land. 😊

That leaves us only one movie i.e. ‘Khaandaan-1965’ which is still eligible to be considered for the ‘blog ten-year challenge’.

Though I am regularly browsing the blog, I failed to notice that three songs of this movie ‘Khaandaan-1965’ were yet to be covered. This discovery came as a big surprise for me. I had a ‘bigger’ ‘surprise’ waiting for me, But they will be discussed some other time. For the time being, we will come directly to the today’s song and post.

‘Khaandaan-1965’ or ‘Khandan-1965’ was directed by A. Bhim Singh for ‘Vasu Films, Madras’. S. Ramanathan was the associate director of this movie and A. Hussain was his assistant. This movie was produced by Vasu Menon. It had Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Pran, Soodesh Kumar, Manmohan Krishna, Mohan Choti and Om Prakash, supported by Ravikant, Arundev, Mumtaz, Sulochana Chatterjee and Lalita Pawar.

Story of this movie was written by M.S. Solaimalai and dialogues were written by Rajinder Krishan who also wrote the lyrics for the songs in this movie.

A. Bhim Singh who was the director of the movie wrote the screenplay of this movie and he was also the editing supervisor of this movie. A. Pauldoraisingam was the editor of this movie.
N.S. Bedi was the Dialogue Instructor for this movie.

This movie had eight songs written by Rajinder Krishan and music was composed by Ravi. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Manna Dey and Mohd Rafi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

So far, the following five songs from “Khaandaan-1965” have been posted on the blog;

Song Posted On
Tumhi mere mandir tumhi meri pooja tumhi devtaa ho 28.07.2010
Kal chaman thaa aaj ek sehraa huaa 30.07.2011

Tu hoke badaa ban jaanaa apni maataa ka rakhwaalaa 09.03.2012
Aa dance karein 31.07.2014

Today’s song is the sixth song from this movie being presented on the blog. This enjoyable ‘teasing’ song is sung by Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Sunil Dutt and Nutan in a ‘village fair’ or ‘mela’ set up where many other artists can also be seen participating in the picturization of this song.

Let us now enjoy today’s song …

Hullo Atuldom

This is an attempt to remember two legends of Bollywood with one post.

On reviewing the “anniversaries page” of the blog I found an opportunity to introduce the qawwali song from a 1982 released (exact date being 27/05/1982 meaning the movie is 38 years old), Raj Kumar Kohli produced and directed, multi starrer “Badle Ki Aag” (Flames of Revenge).

The recent stay-at-home gave me the time to sit through this movie. It is a very typical, simple, regular story with a slight twist.

There is a family of father (Kadar Khan), mother (Nirupa Roy), two sons and a daughter. The father in his greed for wealth wipes out his partner’s family but the children of this family escape the mass-murder. Nirupa Roy gets separated from her sons in the course of walking out on her cruel greedy husband. She has her daughter with her. The sons grow up to be dacoits Shera (Dharmendra) and Lakhan (Sunil Dutt) and daughter (Sarika) an aspiring lawyer whose education is funded by Lakhan who has kept in touch with the mother and sister. Lakhan is a do-gooder daku where as Shera is ruthless.

Meanwhile the daughter (Reena Roy) of the affected family has been brought up in a kotha and nurses a desire to revenge her families misfortune. Her brother (Rajeev Anand who was seen in about 5 movies after which he turned producer) grows up to be a cop. There is one more important character in the whole setup- Inspector Amar Verma (Jeetendra) who is the son of Mohanlal Verma (Madan Puri) who is constantly tormented by Shera and Lakhan. Now here is the promised twist- at different times Geeta (Reena Roy) the dancer has had interaction with the three heroes and all of them have developed feelings for her. But she loves the Inspector who has seen her at different times with the other two and misunderstands her. Isn’t that a different kind of love-story. Here I should mention the existence of Bijli (Smita Patil) who loves Shera. Hope the readers have got confused about the very regular story that this movie had. The movie was a success at the Box-Office what with so many stars.

Today’s songs has the three heroes disguised as Qawwals at Janakidas’s son’s wedding. We have Smita Patil dancing around. Here I must admit that this post reminded me of this Qawwali sung by Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Suresh Wadkar. It had music by Laxmikant- Pyarelal and had lyrics by Verma Malik.

Small thoughts after seeing the song on repeat for writing this post- (1) Sunil Dutt and Jeetendra are jumping around and Dharmendra stays put on his mat. (2) Looks like this is the only time when Smita Patil has shared screen time with Jeetendra.

With this song we remember Sunil Dutt and Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar on their anniversaries.

Lyrics

ho ho ho
ho o ho
ho ho ho ho
ho o ho
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
aata hoon aata hoon aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon

main woh bala hoon
main woh bala hoon
jis se khudaayi darr gayi
main woh bala hoon
jis se khudaayi darr gayi
maut se takkar huyi toh maut tauba kar gayi
tauba tauba tauba
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon

duniya ka iss mutthi mein aaghaaz hai anjaam hai
duniya ka iss mutthi mein aaghaaz hai anjaam hai
aur khuda ke baad har ek
leta mera naam hai
naam hai naam hai
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon

main kya hoooon
main kya hoon
aur kaun hoon tum jaante nahin
main kya hoon aur kaun hoon
tum jaante nahin
donon ka malkul(?) maut hoon pehchaante nahin
main maut se bhi lad jaata hoon

main maut se bhi lad jata hoon
main maut se bhi lad jsata hoon
hoon hoon hoon hoon hoon
jo chaahta hoon le jaata hoon
jo chaahta hoon le jaata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon le jaata hoon

main woh azeem hasti hoon
jise waqt na mita sake
arre main woh azeem hasti hoon
jise waqt na mita sake
na aandhi hi uda sake
na shola hi jalaa sake

bandook se jo baat kare
main us nasal ka khoon hoon
jo dushmanon ko kuchal de
main aisa ek janoon hoon
zaalimon aur baaghiyon qaatil luteron ke liye ae
zaalimon aur baaghiyon qaatil luteron ke liye ae
main khud hi toh insaaf hoon
main khud hi ek kaanoon hoon
kanoon se main takraata hoon

kanoon se main takraata hoon
kanoon se main takrata hoon
hoon hoon hoon hoon hoon
jo chaahta hoon le jaata hoon
jo chaahta hoon le jaata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon le jaata hoon

zulm hoon aur andher hoon main haan
aur jangal ka sher hoon main haan
ser pe sawa ser hoon main haan haan
tujh mein itna josh nahin
arre tujh ko apna hosh nahin
main bhi toh khaamosh nahin
fitna aur fasaad hoon main
tere liye jallaad hoon main
donon ka ustaad hoon main
fitna aur fasaad hoon main
tere liye jallaad hoon main
donon ka ustaad hoon main
haan haan haan haan
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon
le jaata hoon
main jis mehfil mein aata hoon
jo chaahta hoon le jaata hoon
