Hullo Atuldom

“Mehrban” (1967) as spelt in the titles of the movie was an AVM (Madras) production written and directed by A. Bhimsingh. It’s cast was headed by Ashok Kumar, Nutan, Sunil Dutt and had Ramesh Deo, Shyama, Ashim kumar, Jayanthi, Shashikala, Bharathi, Mehmood, Soodesh Kumar and Sulochana Latkar. The dialogues and lyrics were written by Rajinder Kishan and Ravi was the music director. The movie had seven songs of which the blog has the following two.

As we can see this movie last made its appearance in 2016 with a wonderful post by Rajaji who was pushed to write by Avinashji. Infact, for the both songs posted, Avinashji was the lyrics contributor.

The 2013 post had a brief synopsis of the movie. It equated the movie to the 1990 David Dhawan directed Rajesh Khanna- Govinda starrer “Swarg”. I happened to see “Mehrbaan” recently and realised that the similarity is limited. Yes, Rajesh Khanna played the rich-man in “Swarg” similar to Ashok Kumar’s character in “Mehrban”. Govinda played the orphan who is devoted to the family similar to Sunil Dutt’s character in “Mehrban”.

The variations in the 1967 movie is that the wealthy couple Shanti Swarup (Ashok Kumar) and Parvati (Sulochana) have three sons and two daughters in addition to being the adoptive parents of Kanhaiya (Sunil Dutt). (In “Swarg” the wealthy couple are childess) They also bring in Laxmi (Nutan) whose parents were known to them and who die leaving Laxmi to fend for herself. So, as we can see it is a full house. That gives the story all kinds of good, bad and ugly characters which helps the writer to gives us a three-hour long movie with lots of ‘rona-dhona’ ‘kasam khana and khilana’ etc. i.e. a highly emotional movie. The end is predictable in that all the family members come together and live happily, once again.

Just remembered another variation between “Swarg” and “Mehrban”. In “Swarg” Krishna (Govinda) becomes rich by acting in movies, buys back the property of his ‘sahabji’ (Rajesh Khanna) and teaches the errant brothers a lesson or two before bringing them back to apologise for all the wrongs that they have done. Kanhaiya of ‘Mehrban’ doesn’t wait to earn riches before coming back to set matters right in the adoptive family. Kanhaiya (Sunil Dutt) has Laxmi (whom he marries before being sent away from the home by Sulochana) for support whereas Krishna does it with the help of his friend ‘Airport’ (Satish Kaushik).
Also, in ‘Swarg’ Sahabji’s wife dies of shock and in ‘Mehrban’ Shanti Swarup dies leaving his wife to the mercy of his ungrateful children.

‘Swarg’ was said to be a remake of ‘Mehrban’ which itself was a remake from the 1960 Tamil hit ‘Padikkadha Medhai’ (Uneducated Genius) which in turn was a remake of the 1953 Bengali movie ‘Jog Biyog’ which was based on the novel of the same name by Ashapurna Devi. So, that means this story will hold good in any time and age.

We are revisiting this movie today with a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi but (surprise) it is not a romantic song. In fact, the movie doesn’t have any romantic song, in the true sense of the term. There is a Lata Mangeshkar solo which has Nutan pacifying a sad Sunil Dutt. This song relates the story of Shanti Swarup to his grandchildren.

This is one of five movies where Nutan and Sunil Dutt played the lead. As I was looking up the anniversaries tab of the blog I found that the birth-dates of the two were one day apart. I wondered what scenario it would have been, back then, when the shooting of the movies were on. Nutan would have turned 85 on 4th June and Sunil (birth-name Balraj) Dutt would have been 92. Just a passing thought, their sons are actors too and have acted together in a few movies.

12th February was the birthday of an Atulite. He has started a series to introduce missing movies of the ’70s, and just as well as movies of 70s will complete 50 years. It is unbelievable that movies that were part of our childhood are 50 years old.

‘Guddi’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Caravan’, ‘Anand’, ‘Anubhav’, ‘Parwana’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, etc all 1971 releases, all which I have seen multiple times. I am sure that these movies would be favourites of a majority of the followers of this blog.

There is one more movie that will complete 50 years this year. Its release date has been recorded on various internet sites as 1st July 1971, but the censor certificate has a date of 24th February 1970 i.e. exactly a year after its leading lady bade goodbye to this mortal world.

Madhubala- the beauty who charmed an entire generation of moviegoers. A beauty who had an infectious smile and near-musical laughter: – can anyone forget the laughter that precedes ‘haal kaisa hai janaab ka’ or the mischievous smile through ‘accha jee main haari chalo maan jaao na’ and ‘jaanu jaanu re chhupke kaun aaya tore angna’. Her eyes were so expressive. But write-ups about her say that she kept a low public profile and was not seen at film parties and premieres.

She was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi in Delhi on 14th February (which the world celebrates as valentine day in modern times) as fifth of eleven children to Ataullah Khan and Ayesha Begum. An out of work father first reached Delhi from Peshawar (now in Pakistan) and then to Bombay. A very young Mumtaz was first cast as a child actor in the 1942 release ‘Basant’ which was followed by ‘Mumtaz Mahal’,‘Phulwaari’, ‘Dhana Bhagat’, ‘Rajputaani’. Baby Mumtaz became Madhubala from “Neel Kamal” in 1947. It is said that baby Mumtaz and baby Mahjabeen became friends in the period they were child actors and grew up to be contemporaries – Madhubala and Meena Kumari. Madhubala is said to have been a fan of Meena and her voice.

Madhubala was one of the most popular, successful and highly paid actresses of the ‘50s and ’60s. She acted in 73 movies in a career spanning almost two decades though the ‘60s saw only five films of hers. She also produced three movie: – ‘Naata’ (1955), ‘Mehlonkekhwab’ (1960) and ‘Pathan’ (1962). She sang a song or two as baby Mumtaz in ‘Basant’. She was an enigma who was rarely seen at filmy functions or premieres, this was because she was an obedient daughter and submitted to the domination of her father. According to what Dilip Kumar has once said:- she was the only female star for whom crowds would gather at the gates of the studios where she was shooting. Many believe she was one of the most underrated actresses as her beauty attracted more attention than her talent. She was good at expressing a range of emotions through her eyes- comedy, pathos etc etc. In spite of being an iconic actress she never won any awards and was only nominated for her role in “Mughal-e-azam” but she reigned on the hearts of her fans.

She was unlucky in life and had a few heartbreaks before leaving this world and Kishore Kumar, whom she married in 1960, yearning for her. She died on 23rd February 1969 of congenital heart disease;an ailment for which there was no treatment when she was diagnosed in 1954 on the sets of a film being made in Madras. By the time heart surgeries were possible she was too weak to withstand and was confined to bed for nearly nine years. In 1966 she attempted to complete her part of work in the Raj Kapoor starrer “Chalaak” but that was also a strain for her fragile body. (Most of this information I have found on Wikipedia about an actress/ star who was on my dad’s list of favorites in those times).

The song with this post is from a movie that was shot sometime in the ‘50sand we have a very young Sunil Dutt romancing the princess “Jwala” (Madhubala). This movie is significant as it is the only movie of Madhubala that was shot in colour, “Mughal-e-azam” was partly in colour at the time of making, but “Jwala” was made as a colour movie. Sudhirji’s post gives us details about the movie which was essentially a ‘princess falling in love with a commoner who turns out to be a prince in exile’ story. Today’s song is written by Rajinder Krishan, tuned by Shankar -Jaikishan and sung by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar.

February was the month of Madhubala’s birth and she would have turned 88. It is also the month she left the world at 36. We, her fans, can only fantasize how she would have looked as an octogenarian.

Today (11 August 2020) happens to be Janmashtmi, the day Lord Krishna, the avatar of Lord Vishnu was born in the Dwapar Yug. His earlier avatar was in the Treata Yug and that was as Lord Ram, and the birthday of Lord Ram is called Ramnavami.

Lord Ram was a serious, sombre, idealism personifieed avatar of Lord Vishnu whereas Lord Krishna was a playful, more human like avatar. Playful and non serious he may be, but he meant business when the situation so demanded. And do not fiorget, it is Lord Vishnu, who gave us Bhagwatgeeta ka gyaan.

It should come as no surprise to note that Lord Krishna has been a favourite God of Hindi movies and there have been a good number of Lord Krishn related songs in Hindi movies.

On every Janmashtmi, we feature at least one Lord Krishn related song. The first janmashtmi of the blog saw the occasion getting celebrated with the popular song Shyaam teri bansi pukaare Radha naam (Geet Gaata Chal). Next janmashtmi in 2009 saw an out and out iconic janmashtmi song viz Govinda aal re aalaa zara matki sambhaal brijbaala (Bluffmaster) getting discussed.

If one thinks that we have run out of Lord Krishn related songs for this janmashtmi, now that it is the 13th janmashtmi occasiobn for the blog, one cannot be more wrong.

Here is a fantastic Lord Krishn related song from “Khaandan”(1965). This song is sung by Rafi and chorus. The song begins with a stuti, which sounds like the voice of Ravi to me. Lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan. Music is composed by Ravi, a ceator of iconic songs (my description for him).

The song is picturised on Sunil Dutt, with lots of other devotees engaged in the song and dance celebration, including Nutan, and Omprakash. It is Omprakash, who starts the bhajan singing the Sanskrit stuti.

Incidentally, some places in India celebrate Janmashtmi tomorrrow (12 August 2020), but UP people should know better, because Lord Krishn was born in these parts. :). According to UP calendars, it falls today. May be it falls in night, seeing that Lord Krishna was born at night.

Ten years back on this day , viz on 28th July 2010, the blog saw as many as six songs being represented as given below;

Out of the six movies represented on the blog on that day five movies viz. ‘Kanyaadaan-1968’, ‘Sehra-1963’, ‘Nau Do Gyaarah-1957’, ‘Mr and Mrs 55-1955’, and ‘Taxi Driver-1954’ all their songs have already been covered and they have already landed in ‘Yipeeeee’ land. 😊

That leaves us only one movie i.e. ‘Khaandaan-1965’ which is still eligible to be considered for the ‘blog ten-year challenge’.

Though I am regularly browsing the blog, I failed to notice that three songs of this movie ‘Khaandaan-1965’ were yet to be covered. This discovery came as a big surprise for me. I had a ‘bigger’ ‘surprise’ waiting for me, But they will be discussed some other time. For the time being, we will come directly to the today’s song and post.

‘Khaandaan-1965’ or ‘Khandan-1965’ was directed by A. Bhim Singh for ‘Vasu Films, Madras’. S. Ramanathan was the associate director of this movie and A. Hussain was his assistant. This movie was produced by Vasu Menon. It had Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Pran, Soodesh Kumar, Manmohan Krishna, Mohan Choti and Om Prakash, supported by Ravikant, Arundev, Mumtaz, Sulochana Chatterjee and Lalita Pawar.

Story of this movie was written by M.S. Solaimalai and dialogues were written by Rajinder Krishan who also wrote the lyrics for the songs in this movie.

A. Bhim Singh who was the director of the movie wrote the screenplay of this movie and he was also the editing supervisor of this movie. A. Pauldoraisingam was the editor of this movie.
N.S. Bedi was the Dialogue Instructor for this movie.

This movie had eight songs written by Rajinder Krishan and music was composed by Ravi. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Manna Dey and Mohd Rafi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This is an attempt to remember two legends of Bollywood with one post.

On reviewing the “anniversaries page” of the blog I found an opportunity to introduce the qawwali song from a 1982 released (exact date being 27/05/1982 meaning the movie is 38 years old), Raj Kumar Kohli produced and directed, multi starrer “Badle Ki Aag” (Flames of Revenge).

The recent stay-at-home gave me the time to sit through this movie. It is a very typical, simple, regular story with a slight twist.

There is a family of father (Kadar Khan), mother (Nirupa Roy), two sons and a daughter. The father in his greed for wealth wipes out his partner’s family but the children of this family escape the mass-murder. Nirupa Roy gets separated from her sons in the course of walking out on her cruel greedy husband. She has her daughter with her. The sons grow up to be dacoits Shera (Dharmendra) and Lakhan (Sunil Dutt) and daughter (Sarika) an aspiring lawyer whose education is funded by Lakhan who has kept in touch with the mother and sister. Lakhan is a do-gooder daku where as Shera is ruthless.

Meanwhile the daughter (Reena Roy) of the affected family has been brought up in a kotha and nurses a desire to revenge her families misfortune. Her brother (Rajeev Anand who was seen in about 5 movies after which he turned producer) grows up to be a cop. There is one more important character in the whole setup- Inspector Amar Verma (Jeetendra) who is the son of Mohanlal Verma (Madan Puri) who is constantly tormented by Shera and Lakhan. Now here is the promised twist- at different times Geeta (Reena Roy) the dancer has had interaction with the three heroes and all of them have developed feelings for her. But she loves the Inspector who has seen her at different times with the other two and misunderstands her. Isn’t that a different kind of love-story. Here I should mention the existence of Bijli (Smita Patil) who loves Shera. Hope the readers have got confused about the very regular story that this movie had. The movie was a success at the Box-Office what with so many stars.

Today’s songs has the three heroes disguised as Qawwals at Janakidas’s son’s wedding. We have Smita Patil dancing around. Here I must admit that this post reminded me of this Qawwali sung by Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Suresh Wadkar. It had music by Laxmikant- Pyarelal and had lyrics by Verma Malik.

Small thoughts after seeing the song on repeat for writing this post- (1) Sunil Dutt and Jeetendra are jumping around and Dharmendra stays put on his mat. (2) Looks like this is the only time when Smita Patil has shared screen time with Jeetendra.

With this song we remember Sunil Dutt and Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar on their anniversaries.

A very happy Janmashtami or Gokulashtami or Sri Krishna Jayanthi as it is called in the various parts of the country. It is celebrated with a lot of prasads, bhajans and jagrans (in some regions). Jagran means keeping awake. The thought behind this is that Lord Krishna was born in the dead of the night so the devotees keep vigil till that hour. As per mythology it was raining heavily at the time of the Lord’s birth and most of the country is having a good monsoon at this point.

The Srimad Bhagwat Puraan says- at birth the Lord was transported, hidden inside a basket by his father Vasudev, to the house of Nand in Gokul, across a swollen Yamuna. (As if in anticipation of the lord there is a flood alert along the banks of the river Yamuna this year.) The Lord grew up in the loving care of Nand and his wife Yashoda. His baal-leelas (playful pastimes as a child) are described in the 10th Canto of the Srimad Bhagwat Puraan. One of the acts described in great detail is ‘maakhan chori‘ – how the lord Loved to reach out to the pots of curds, milk and butter that used to be hung up in the kitchens of Gokul.

Today’s song shows the day 2 of the Janmashtami / Gokulashtami celebrations that is very common in western India. It is from the 1979 Rajkumar Kohli directed Sunil Dutt- Reena Roy- Bindiya Goswami- Shatrughan Sinha starrer ‘Muqaabla’. It has songs penned by Verma Malik with Laxmi-Pyare as the music directors.  Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Anwar, Mahendra Kapoor and Mohd. Rafi are the playback singers used in the movie. The movie was a typical romantic, masaala movie where Sunil Dutt and Shatru play gang leaders. I vaguely remember having seen it, possibly on television, and by the time I discovered it half the movie was over.

Sheru (Shatrughan Sinha) and Vicky (Sunil Dutt) are two gang leaders. After a series of complications and mishaps both realize that they will be better off being friends and helping the poor and needy. They also fall in love with two separate women, one of them is Lacho (Reena Roy). When these two turn good guys, the bad guy’s leader Banwanri (Ranjeet) gets angry and vengeful. Fortunately, our two heroes get support from a honest police inspector (Premnath). Then Sheru finds out that Lacho really loves Vicky and his son, this embittered them both against each other. And the two again resume their old rivalry and hatred for each other.

As I said earlier, Janmashtami celebrations continue on to the second day in many parts of India. There are street corner scenes where in pots of goodies along with dahi are tied high up. Groups of youngsters make an attempt at breaking the pots, by making human pyramids and emulating Krishna’s habit of breaking pots which were tied up in the kitchens of yore.

In my younger days (there, I let the cat out of the bag, that I am not so young now though I like to think that I am still a bachcha 🙂 ) we used to have dahi-handi in our apartment complex between the two wings of flats. They used to be tied at a height of 1st floor. We needed a pyramid of three tiers to reach the handi. It was a very simple joyful day. Then as time went by, as in other spheres of life, commercialization set in the dahi-handi festival began to be conducted with prize money attached to the ropes of dahi-handi. This has further grown to the extent that there is this chowk (crossroad intersection) in Thane where the competition is held and the whole road is out of bounds for traffic for the day. And groups of youth practice for months on end to make pyramids which have seven or eight layers. There are numerous cases of people falling and breaking their limbs.  Lately there are also all girl groups in the contest. It is telecast live on all Marathi TV channels and makes for good viewing.

Dahi-handi was made popular in Hindi cinema by Shammi Kapoor in ‘Bluffmaster’ (1965) – the original “Govinda Aala Re, Aala, Zara Matki Sambhaal Brijbaala“.  Various heroes have copied him in subsequent years. In today’s song, we have Shatrughan Sinha and Sunil Dutt have a go at the handi along with Manmohan (in red shirt) and others who are not clear in this video. (A few years back Sonakshi Sinha also had a Govinda song to her name). The song is written by Verma Malik and Laxmikant Pyarelal are the music directors. Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar are the playback singers.  I couldn’t stop my smile when I saw Sunil Dutt dancing. Don’t know who the dance master was who gave him steps that were uncharacteristic of Duttsaab. Then Dr. Shreeram Lagoo enters the scene as the advisor of peace and I was desperately trying to recognize the actor in the light brown shirt with a head band who was trying to raise bets on who will break the handi. The finale of the song is the whole pyramid collapsing when this actor pokes a pin into the feet of one of the govindas (that is what the boys in the pyramid are called)

‘Daaku Aur Jawaan’ was a 1978 release. It was directed by Sunil Dutt and starred Reena Roy, Leena Chandavarkar, Bindu, Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Ranjeet, Om Prakash, Anwar Hussain, Kanhaiyalal, Asrani, Padma Khanna, Tun Tun, Sundar etc. Its music composers were Laxmikant  Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi was the lyricist.

This is the story of the movie as given on Wikipedia-

Birju (Sunil Dutt) and Ramu (Vinod Khanna) are brothers and have a friendly bond with each other, They do a lot of pranks with the villagers, but the pressure of the landlord {Anwar Hussain) and the urban bad guy Bhairon Singh (Ranjeet) leads villagers to pay a fee for their lands to work on them. This leads Ramu to join the army as a Jawaan (Soldier). Bhairon Singh, with the help of Thakurain (Bindu) plans to frame Birju as a criminal on the night of Janamashtmi. Bhairon Singh brutally rapes Ganga (Reena Roy) and steals the entire wealth from the safe of her father. After getting raped by Bhairon Singh, Ganga commits suicide by jumping into the well. Bhairon Singh frames Birju for the rape and murder of Ganga and stealing the money. Birju is arrested by the police, but escapes and takes a pledge on Ganga’s funeral pyre that he will take revenge of her death and he turns into a Daaku (Dacoit). Ramu, in the war, is fighting against enemies, but gets back to his village after losing one leg. After a lot of turns and twists, Seeta (Leena Chandavarkar) finally reveals the truth that Bhairon Singh had raped Ganga and he has stolen all the wealth from her house with the help of Thakurain. When Birju comes to know about it, he beats Bhairon Singh in front of all the villagers and finally kills him by throwing him into the well where Ganga committed suicide. Now, Thakurain tries to kill Ramu, but Birju takes the bullet in his chest saving Ramu in the process. Thakurain is arrested by the police. Birju, finally breathing his last, requests Ramu to read the letter which was written by him. After listening to the letter from Ramu, Birju dies reuniting with Ganga in Heaven. In the end, Ramu marries Seeta and they lived happily ever after.

So that then seems to be a very normal Hindi film story where any reason is good enough for the hero to turn a ‘daaku‘. And I must say Sunil Dutt would have made an imposing daaku remembering him from all the daaku roles he had played starting from ‘Mother India’ (1957), – his first role as a daaku. Incidentally, in that films also, his role name is Birju. And to have Vinod Khanna play his brother would have been “a sight to soothe sore eyes”. Another of his earlier films in which he plays the role of daaku is ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ in 1963.

Today on the death anniversaries of Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar (its 21 years today since his passing away) and Sunil Dutt (14 years today) let us have a song from this 1978 movie which will give us an idea of their talents at the height of their careers.

Presenting the next episode in this series. The film is a standard family drama from the still sedate 1960s, and the fever of disco was still hidden in far horizons. The film is ‘Bhai Behen’ from 1969. The lead pair of Nutan and Sunil Dutt, with a better part of two decades of careers behind them, still look handsome and comely.

The film comes from the banner of Vikram Productions, Madras, and is directed by the renowned A Bhimsingh. The cast of actors is listed as Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Pran, Padmini, Sulochana, Helen, Diwakar, Mukri, Bhalla, Shivraj, V Puranik, and Babbanlal. Quite a formulaic presentation this one must be – one look as the list of actors, and one can quickly surmise the type of roles that each actor would have played.

Seven songs and four songwriters are listed – Rajendra Krishan, SH Bihari, Pt Narendra Sharma and Hasrat Jaipuri. This song is from the pen of SH Bihari. Music is composed by the duo of Shanker Jaikishan.

The song is about coming of age and the blossoming of first love. The song plays out in the gardens and then on to the boat and the Bombay coastline. Both Sunil Dutt and Nutan are still fresh from their 1967 hit together – ‘Milan’. And a little further back, they also have more hits together – ‘Khandaan’ in 1965 and ‘Sujaata’ in 1960. Ah yes, also ‘Gauri’ from 1968.

Today, March 8th is the 97th birth anniversary of Sahir Ludhianvi, one of my favourite poet-lyricists. Before him, there were other eminent Urdu poets such as Arzoo Lucknowi, Safdar Aah Sitapuri, Behzad Lucknowi, Josh Malihabadi etc who had been associated with the Hindi film industry sometime or the other. But it was Sahir Ludhianvi who clicked with the Hindi film industry as a poet and raised the status of the lyricists.  Eventually, he created such a status for himself in the Hindi film industry that some of the established producers/directors first took him on board before finalising the music directors for their films.

The traumatic childhood and the failed love affairs coupled with his leftist ideological leanings, are reflected in his ghazals and nazms published in the book ‘Talkhiyaan‘ (‘Bitternesses’) in 1945. However, it was his association with the Hindi film industry which gave him the opportunity to write film songs in the poetic form covering almost all the facets of human life. Some samples below:

In addition, Sahir Sahab also wrote other genres such as qawwali,  patriotic songs, devotional songs etc. A question is raised as to what is so unique about  Sahir Sahab’s songs? His contemporary Urdu poets like Shakeel Badayuni, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Kaifi Azmi also wrote many genres of songs for the films. In my view, the main difference was that Sahir Sahab’s songs were  an extension of his literary poetry (adabi shaayari) while the others wrote mostly lyrics for the songs. While Majrooh Sultanpuri and Kaifi Azmi rarely mixed the PWA ideology in their film songs, Sahir Sahab’s songs covered such thoughts even in some fun songs in films like  ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954), ‘Funtoosh’ (1956) and  ‘Pyaasa’ (1957).

We  should be thankful to Sahir Sahab for joining the Hindi film industry. Had he remained away from Hindi film industry and concentrated only on the literary Urdu poetry, we would have certainly missed the range of his poetry in the Hindi film songs. Surely, he would have joined the list of the Urdu poets of pains, bitterness and sorrows like Mir Taqi Mir,  Faani Badayuni, Majaaz Lucknowi,  Sudarshan Faakir etc. But in this process, he would have missed ‘the poet of mass appeal’ tag.

Again, I would say that Sahir Sahab’s  association with Hindi film industry perforce made him to look for the brighter side of the life. Note how he starts one of the songs in ‘Shagoon’ (1964) in a pessimistic note and ends with optimism:

Sahir Sahab first came to Bombay (now Mumbai) in January 1946. He began his filmy career in the same year with an assignment to write songs for the film ‘Aazaadi Ki Raah Par’ under the baton of music director GD Kapoor. He wrote 3 songs for this film. (The film’s release was delayed and it got released only in 1948). After this assignment, there is a gap of about 3 years in his filmy career. When partition happened he returned to Lahore in September 1947 to search for and bring back his mother. Sometime in the middle of 1948, he had to hurriedly leave Lahore. After returning, he first came to Delhi, where he occupied himself editing an Urdu periodical for about a year. In May 1949, he came to Bombay with a resolve to become a song writer for the films.

The greatest handicap for Sahir Sahab in pursuing his career in film industry was that he was already a popular Urdu poet with his published work ‘Talkhiyaan’ (1945). The film industry is generally wary of poets’ capabilities of writing lyrics for the songs for given situations in the films. After struggling for about 2 years, he got the opportunity to write songs for the film ‘Naujawaan’ (1951) under SD Burman. The box office success of ‘Baazi’ (1951) in the same year with its hit songs gave a boost to his career in the film industry. During 1951-57, Sahir Sahab majorly worked with SD Burman (138 songs out of 218).

Sahir Ludhianvi’s ‘obsession’ to place his song writings above the contributions of  singers and music directors seems to have come into open sometime in mid 1950s when he had arguments with Lata Mangeshkar on this issue. It is a moot point whether it was Lata Mangeshkar who refused to sing his songs or other way round. But the end result was that Sahir lost 9 out of 11 films because producers/directors will have Lata Mangeshkar rather than Sahir Ludhianvi [Source: Javed Akhtar on TV programme ‘Classic Legends’]. Two films which remained with him were ‘Pyaasa’ (1957) and ‘Naya Daur’ (1957) in which Lata Mangeshkar had no songs. But it was these two films which gave him the status as a song writer par excellence. Here Sahir Sahab proved his point that his songs could still become popular without Lata Mangeshkar.

However, the success of these two films also resulted in the termination of Sahir Sahab’s  association with two top music directors at that time – SD Burman and OP Nayyar due to clash of egos. Again, the issue raised was that it was his songs more than the music that these two films became hits. In support of his claims, he started quoting his fees for song writings in a film one rupee above the amount agreed to be paid to the music director of that film. With his tiffs with the top playback singer and two top music directors of that time, many in the Hindi film industry must have felt at that time that Sahir Sahab committed a hara-kiri and his filmy career was doomed.

While Sahir Sahab eventually made up with Lata Mangeshkar, now it was the time for him to prove that his songs can still become popular in the films without the services of the commercially top rated music directors of that time. He roped in music director Khayyam for ‘Phir Subah Hogi’ (1958),  N Dutta for  ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ (1959) and Roshan for ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960). While the first film did not fare well at the box office, its songs became very popular. The other two films were super hits on the box office.  In this process, Sahir Sahab not only retained his eminent position in the film industry as a song writer, he became instrumental in giving boost the sagging careers of music directors, Khayyam, Roshan and later  Ravi (‘Gumraah’, 1963).

In the 1960s, he worked mainly with the second line music directors but had super hit films like ‘Hum Dono’ (1961), ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963), ‘Gumraah’ (1963), ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ (1963), ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), ‘Kaajal’ (1965), ‘Waqt’ (1965), ‘Hamraaz’ (1967), ‘Aankhen’ (1968). Some of the films which  did not fare well at the box office but their songs are remembered even today were ‘Aaj Aur Kal’ (1963), ‘Chitralekha’ (1964), ‘Ghazal’ (1964), ‘Shagoon’ (1964) and ‘Bahu Begum’ (1967).

There is no denying the fact that there is something magical in Sahir Sahab’s song writings. Most of his songs struck a chord with the audience and the listeners. My own experiences in listening to some of his songs are that his lyrics are the characteristic that first registered in my mind, for most of his songs.

There is a quote in the fashion world – the dress must follow the body and not the body following the shape of the dress. If this quote is extended to film songs, one can say that a beautiful body (lyrics) brings out the best in the dress (music). Sahir Sahab believed that it is the beautiful poetry which brings best of the music composition. He became more forthcoming in keeping his song writings ahead of the music director after the success of ‘Pyaasa’ (1957). In  my view, he was not off the mark, particularly for his popular songs.

In my younger days, when I had listened to “Ye Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye To Kya Hai” and “Jinhen Naaz Hai Hind Par Wo Kahaan Hain”, the lyrics came to my attention first because they were soulful, momentarily forgetting the contributions of playback singer and the music director. The reason was that the first verse itself created interest in me to listen to the full lyrics. That SD Burman composed the orchestration with bare minimum musical instruments and Rafi sang in a soft voice are the recognition of the importance of the lyrics of these two songs. Probably, this was also the intention of Guru Dutt as a director.

“Jaane Kya Tu Ne Kahi Jaane Kya Maine Suni”  brought the singer  (Geeta Dutt) to the fore in my mind because of her seductive rendition. Yet, he is successful in bringing the words also in the forefront despite the fact that he had written the song on a pre-set tune. The reason is that this song has been written in short verses – mostly within 4 words. In the context of today’s world, one can say the song has been written in Whatsapp language – short yet effective to convey the message.

Even the dream sequence song, “Hum Aapki Aankhon Mein Is Dil Ko Basaa Den To” which was said to be added in the film on the insistence of film distributor/financier, the imageries used  in the song for teasing are unique and remain in the mind of the listeners. This was basically a ‘relief’ song for the audience in the midst of sad and depressing theme of the film. Generally, such type of ‘addition’ of the song goes out of mind quickly but this song became unforgettable.

I will stop analysing the remaining songs of ‘Pyaasa’ at this stage. Sahir Sahab’s list of beautiful film songs is endless. In fact, one can attempt to write a separate article on each of Sahir Sahab’s  films about his songs especially of his films like ‘Phir Subah Hogi’ (1958), ‘Dhool Kaa Phool’ (1959), ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960), ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963), ‘Ghazal’ (1964), ‘Chitralekha’ (1964), ‘Waqt’ (1965) etc

In the 70s, Sahir Sahab continued to be in demand but his charisma in his song writings seems to have somewhat waned. This could be because of two main reasons. First, he was basically a romantic poet and the romantic theme in the films had given way for action-oriented themes with angry man image.  It appears he had a premonition about this when he first wrote the nazm “Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shaayar Hoon“.

Secondly, after the death of his mother in 1976,  he seems to have lost interest in song writing. Also,  his PWA friends were advising him to concentrate more on writing literary poetry. It is said that he had almost decided to reduce his commitments for song writing and concentrate more on literary poetry. However, before he could complete his films’ commitments, a massive heart attack took him away from us on October 25, 1980 at the age of 59.

Sahir Sahab’s life can be summed up in one verse of his  nazm Faraar published in ‘Talkhiyaan’ (1945):

ishq naakaam sahi zindagi naakaam nahin 

Sahir Sahab’s love affairs failed but he lived his life at his own terms and immensely contributed to the making of the golden era of Hindi film music. During the three decades of his association with Hindi film industry, he wrote 732 songs in 114 films worked with 30 music directors. It can be observed that out of 732 songs Sahir Ludhianvi wrote during his filmy career, as many as 479 songs (65%) were written for just 5 music director – S D Burman (138), Ravi (131), N Dutta (109), Roshan (59) and  Khayyam (42). He had no occasion to write songs for big names like Naushad and Shankar-Jaikishan and the second line music directors like Salil Chaudhury, SN Tripathi etc.

On the occasion of 97th birth anniversary of Sahir Ludhianvi, I have chosen the song “Hum Jab Chalen To Ye Jahaan Jhoome”, the only song he wrote for the film ‘Hum Hindustani’ (1960). This is a motivational song for the youngsters and is aptly sung by Mohammed Rafi under the baton of Usha Khanna.

Piya Tune Kya Kiya Re, Tere Bin Laage Na Jiya” – this post in 2008 by Atul ji inspired me to sit through an otherwise serious (read boring) movie. In the post Atul ji had written 3 postscripts each after different stages of movie watching and getting more gyaan about the movie. There is nothing more to add about the movie if one reads that particular post.

We just have one more song left of this movie – the song which Deb Mukherjee sings in the voice of Kishore Kumar and Farida Jalal in Lata’s voice. The song comes close to the climax as Deb Mukherjee bids farewell to the doctor, nurses, ward boys (through the movie I didn’t see a single nurse or ward boy; they appear for this song), compounder and the other patients of the hospital. The song is supposed to inspire the patients that they will also recover from their illnesses. The patients have been depressed after Ashok Kumar dies in the hospital – not the doctor’s fault mind you, he didn’t obey the doctor.

The song also expresses Waheeda’s and Sunil Dutt’s feelings towards each other as they can’t sing and dance themselves. She is a widow and the mother of a child, who is being treated by the doctor (Sunil Dutt). Here I will also add that they were in love before Waheeda’s chacha (Gajanan Jagirdar) and chachi (Shyama) objected to their marriage as they belong to different castes. Waheeda gets married to some railway engineer; whose face is never shown and who dies in a freak railway accident.

The film is directed by Tapan Sinha for John Pictures, Bombay. The film has seven songs, all penned by Anand Bakshi. The music is given by SD Burman. The earlier posted songs of this film are,
