Today (16 january 2017) is the 91st birth anniversary of O P Nayyar (16 January 1926 – 28 January 2007). Like C Ramchandra, both his anniversaries fall in the month of January.

It is interesting to realise that the music of these two composers was built around the singing prowess of two singing sisters.

C Ramchandra composed his best music when he tied up with Lata. Lata broke up with him in late 1950s and C Ramchandra was no longer the same music director.

O P Nayyar was one music director who made his mark without utilising the voice of Lata even once. But whose voice did he utilse instead ? Lata’s younger sister’s voice. The reliance of O P Nayyar on Asha Bhonsle’s voice was just as total as C Ramchandra’s was on Lata’s voice.

Asha Bhonsle and O P Nayyar managed to stick together till “Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Jaaye”(1973) and then they parted ways in the most bitter manner possible. Their parting of ways has been discussed by many people and it has been discussed even in this blog while discussing another song from this movie.

“Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye”(1973) had some superb songs rendered by Asha Bhonsle. Four of these songs have already been discussed in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye”(1973) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar, of course.

The song is picturised on Rekha, with Premnath and Sunil Dutt also visible in the picturisation.

Prakashchandra, who sent me the lyrics of this song alongwith other information about this song. He shares an interesting information about the picturisation of this song. He informs us that this song was picturised at Empire theatre, Jabalpur. It is a very interesting information indeed. “Empire Talkies”, located near Jabalpur Railway station on Army land was owned by Premnath. This talkies functioned as long as Premnath was alive but it got shut down after the death of Premnath. His sons did not bother to run the talkies. The building, after decades of disrepair collapsed a few years ago. When the sons of Premnath did not respond then the military administration retook possision of the structure,

There is a bus stand near the hall and it is known as empire talkies bus stop. I suppose this name will continue to be used even though the talkies has now collapsed. It is interesting to realise that Rekha, Sunil Dutt and Premnath had shot for the picturisation of this song some 45 years ago !

Here is this superb song from “Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye”(1973)- a movie that has so many stories associated with it.

hamne teraa
mukhdaa dekha hai ae
zulm se tere
jab jab dil ka
sheesha toota hai
har tukde mein
hamne teraa
mukhdaa dekha hai ae

pyaasi hai pyaar ki
donon ki zindagi ee
pyaasi hai pyaar ki
dil meraa kahey
chhod ke mujhe
aur kahin mat jaanaa
ohho dekho
arrey dilbar

donon tadpaaye ae
haal ye apnaa
aakhir kisko
kehne hum jaayein aen
zulf ki thandak
jism ki garmi
dono tadpaayen
haal ye apnaa
aakhir kisko
kehne hum jaayein
mushkil hai kaatnaa
ek pal tere binaa
mushkil hai kaatnaa aa
ek pal tere binaa
meri nigaah par
kabhi yakeen kar
maan bhi ley
mera kehnaa

tere pyaar ne
haayye kar daala..aaaa
dil tukde tukde

As I write out this post today, I have strong emotions attached to it.

It is a huge honour for me to write this post. I have to thank Atul for giving me the opportunity to do so.

Just a few days ago, Atul sent me an e-mail asking me if I could do a write-up for Kishore Kumar’s 1000th song on this blog. And of course, I immediately mailed back “Sure”. I wouldn’t miss this opportunity – it is indeed a very special occasion and a huge honour for me.

June 6th is Sunil Dutt’s birth anniversary. He was born in 1929, so we celebrate his 86th birthday. His debut film was Railway Platform (1955). The role of the idealist, who wants to change the society, would follow him for most part of the 50s. In 1963 he donned the role of a dacoit Thakur Jarnail Singh, which was quite unusual for the times. In fact, it was sort of an extension of his role in Mother India (1957). Dacoit roles would haunt him for the rest of his career. He did meaningful films, particularly with Chopra brothers in the 60s. His magnum opus Reshma aur Shera (1972) though left him in financial doldrums, which sent him on a film-signing spree throughout the 70s. At first it was to pay back his debts and later for the cancer treatment of his wife. He took leave of his career as a leading man after launching his son in Rocky (1981) with the film Dard Ka Rishta (1982).
