What to say about this qawwaali. . . what a gem, what a superb, almost impromptu presentation, and the lyrics, gosh, such wonderful, impactful, crisp, and short, with a punchline in each antaraa that spontaneously evokes the reaction, ‘waah waah kyaa baat hai’, ‘kya misra maaraa hai. . . kamaal hai.’.
Simply shows how carried away I get, on hearing this qawwaali. It is a short one, it does not have a large group to render it, and it does not have long and winding lyrics. Just simple and straightforward, and gosh so hard hitting. A group of gentlemen, and a drinking / smoking / singing session. The setting almost looks like the scene was ready for a mujaraa, and the dancer protagonist took a leave. And the gentlemen who have gathered simply decide to revel themselves to generate the entertainment.
The lyrics are a commanding declamation of the power of love, the extreme of epithetical comparisons, and powerful reinforcements of is qualities, reaching up to the point to make a statement that this world would simply would not exist but for love, and nothing is this world would be without it. The music composition is boisterous and invigorating, and the singing is emphatic and full of gusto. Every time, the singers arrive at the punch line, the entire gathering is up in arms, enthused into providing the prominent accent to stress the specific thought – almost an explosion. Everyone, including a Dilip Kumar in a bearded disguise, are seen enjoying this presentation to the hilt.
The film is Azaad. An action comedy costume drama from 1955, the film is produced under the banner of Pakshiraj Studio, Madras and is produced and directed by SMS Naidu. The star cast is an impressive line up that includes Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Pran, Om Prakash, Raj Mehra, Badri Prasad, Randhir, S Nazir, Murad, Shammi, Achla Sachdev, Baalam, Master Nissar, Ramesh Sinha, Deepa, Sai etc. The lyrics are penned by Rajendra Krishan and the wonderful composition is by C Ramchandra. On screen, the qawwaali is performed by Baalam in the black achkan and Master Nissar, with a traditional cap. (Folks who would remember the iconic qawwaali from Barsaat Ki Raat, “Na To Karvaan Ki Talaash Hai. . .” would recall that the main performer on the opposite camp is this actor, Baalam, who in the end of the qawwaali gets up to embrace Bharat Bhushan.)
As per the YouTube post, and also the Geet Kosh listing, the singing voice is that of Raghunath Jadhav, accompanied by chorus. Apparently both Baalam and Master Nissar are singing on screen for the same background voice.

I came across write up of Sudhir on most memorable qawwali Marna bi mohabbat me kisi…………. Article is as mesmerizing as qawalli itself. Famed Raju Bharatan had remarked that this one is the only “authentic filmi qawwali he had ever heard. Credit goes to one of the all time great composers C.Ramchandra (Anna saheb). It is miraculous how a man who haied from a village in Maharashtra could compose beautiful urdu qawalis, gazals (Remember his champagne touch gazal Mohabbat ki na jo samjhe….). Of course, kamal ki shayari hai by Rajendra Krishan, whose stature was on par with Sahir Ludhianvi.

Thank you for posting one of my favourite songs.I simply love it.The peculiar torn voice of Raghunath Jadhav reminds one of some regular qawwal singing in some jalsa in a haveli.
C.Ramchandra gave simply a masterly music in Azaad.Very few people know the real story behind Azaad’s music.
Azaad was a remake of Tamil ‘Malay Kallan’ by S.M.S.Naidu,in which P.Bhanumati and MGR were the lead actors.That time,Naushad was the most sought after Composer,hence Naidu contacted him.Naushad demanded 1 lakh rupees.Naidu agreed on a condition that all the songs must be completed in 20 days,as the Tamil film sets were kept intact for the Hindi Version.Naushad reacted sharply telling Naidu,” My music is not on sale in a Department store.I cant give even one song in 20 days!”
someone suggested C.Ramchandra’s name.He not only accepted the challenge but completed all 9 songs in just 23 days and took 1 lakh rupees cheque !
The song’ Kitna hasin hai mausam’ a Lata-Chitalkar duet was originally planned with Talat,on the special request of Dilip Kumar.But on the day of recording,Talat did not come and Chitalkar sang the song giving almost the same’Talat’ effect.Just listen to it and you will know.
