Man re tu hi bataa kyaa gaaun

Posted on: November 4, 2011

There are occasions when a couple may have strained relations and they may not be on talking terms with each other. But they are required to put up a facade of normalcy in front of their acquaintances. This song is a lovely picturisation of that nature. It is a get together party and the friends of Rajendra Kumar want Jamuna to sing a song. Rajendra Kumar, who otherwise would not speak to her, is contrained to request her to sing a song. Jamuna, with a heavy heart, is forced to sing this song.

The lyrics by Shailendra capture her turmoil superbly. Lata’s voice and Shankar Jaikishan’s music are magical. Lata While singing the lines “main roti hoon, dil rota hai”, manages to both cry and sing in one breath, which is amazing .

Here is this fantastic song whose lyrics were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Man re tu hi bataa kyaa gaaun (Hamraahi) (1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

Man re
ae ae ae
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon
keh doon apne dil ke dukhde
yaa aansoo pee jaaoon
man re
ae ae ae
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon

jisne barbas baandh liya hai
iss pinjre mein qaid kiya hai
jisne barbas baandh liya hai
iss pinjre mein qaid kiya hai
kab tak main us pathhar dil ka
jee behlaati jaaoon
man re
ae ae ae
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon
keh doon apne dil ke dukhde
yaa aansoo pee jaaoon
man re
ae ae ae
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon

neend mein jab ye jag sotaa hai
main roti hoon
dil rota hai
neend mein jab ye jag sotaa hai
main roti hoon
dil rota hai
mukh pe jhooti muskaanon ki
kab tak rang chadhaaoon
man re
ae ae ae
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon
keh doon apne dil ke dukhde
yaa aansoo pee jaaoon
man re
ae ae ae
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon
tu hi bataa kya gaaoon
man re
ae ae

Yet another beautiful song by Lata from the 60s! I know my parents were not too thrilled about my being crazy over these songs in those days, but I am glad because otherwise I would have missed the opportunity to get to listen to all these songs and enjoy them, and now I am able to go back in memory, thanks to your blog, and revisit those old days!

Lovely song – I’d forgotten all about it.

If I’m not mistaken, Humraahi was a big hit – one of Rajendra Kumar’s many silver jubilee hits. The title song is its best-known song but it also has gems like this.

The story (as I remember it) is that rich Rajendra Kumar is quite a casanova, flirting with girls. Jamuna is a poor girl, who RK falls for. She totally rejects him due to his casanova behaviour. He insists on marrying her and, due to family circumstances, she is forced to marry him. But after marriage, she makes it very clear to him that she intensely dislikes him and he is not supposed to touch her. He is shocked – and promises to make himself worthy of her. The rest of the movie is about how he tries, how she still does not trust him and so on. Typical family drama that South Indian production houses used to produce those days. 🙂 And Rajendra Kumar used to act in.

I just freak out on these type of tunes(read it songs with high pitch or high scale -they must have been based on classical ragas like shivaranjani or bharavi, or some other-I am novice regarding classical ragas, If at all I erred please correct me)created by Shankar jaikishen for lataji(My feelings says all of them are created especially by Jaikishenji for lataj, I have read somewhere about this, But I can not say it with 100% guarrantee)
At a given minute following tune comes to my mind:
1)Jagte raho-Jaago mohan pyare
2)Jis desh mein ganga behti hai:O basanthi pawan paagal and Maine pyaar kiya, haaye haaye
3)Aah-Raja ki aayegi baraat
4)Dil ek mandir:Ruk jaa raat teher jaare chanda
5)Asli Naqli-Tera mera pyaar amar
6)Raat aur din:Na chhedo kal ke afsaane
7)Katputli:title song,Itne bade jahaan mein ai dil
8)Teesri kasam:Aa aa bhi jaa
9)Dil apna preet paraayee-Title song
10)Basant bahaar:Main piya teri tu maane ya na maane
11)Anari:Tera jaanaa
12)Amrapali:Neel gagan ke chhaon mein, Tadap ye din raat ke
13)Sangam: O mere sanam, o mere sanam
14)Aayee milan ki bela:Tumhein aur kya doon main dil
15)Aarzoo:Bedardi baalama tujhko
16)Rajkumar:AA jaa aayee bahaar
17)Jhuk gaya aasmaan:Mere tumhare beech mein ab tho
18)April fool:Unse pehli nazar kya asar kar gayee
19)Yahudi:Aansoo ki aag leke
20)Halaku:Dil ka na karna aitbaar koi and Aa jaa ke itezaar mein
21)Seema:Baat baat pe rooto na and Suno chhoti si gudiya
22)Patita:Kisi ne apna banaake mujhko
23)chori chori:Rasik balma
