Chali jaaye re jeewan ki gaadi

In the earlier post today, I had mentioned about the somewhat not-so-well-organized collection that is sitting on my hard drives. There is so much that I still have to explore myself. Even I myself am not fully aware of all the items that are sitting in there. It is an unsavory situation, in case I have to search for something and I do not know whether I will find it there. At other times, it is also a lot of fun, to be able to locate and bring out items that I remember or that other friends have requested for. (Please do not think I am trying to impress that my collection is exhaustive. It is not. 😉 )

This particular song is one such instance wherein the search started at some place and ended up at another, but finally I am able to dig out the requested song, with the added bonus that it is a video version. I call it a bonus, because the film is exactly sixty years old. It is otherwise an obscure and relatively less known B/C grade cinema – lesser known actors and lesser known banner. But when one gets to hear the music – the reaction is ‘wow’, A grade material.

So the episode for this song got started exactly a week ago. Arun ji and I received an email from AK ji (of the Songs-of-Yore blog). One of his readers has requested for a song from ‘Rocket Girl’ (1962), sung by Kamal Barot, maybe a solo, or maybe a duet. The email also contained some information queries relating to Kamal Barot. Of course Arun ji promptly responded to the information queries (as always 🙂 ). But the song became a difficult thing to find. Well for one, there is no listing of a song with this mukhda, in the details for the film name requested – ‘Rocket Girl’. Now that made things very difficult just to start the search. But then we have a great help in the Geet Kosh. Every Geet Kosh volume has an alphabetical index of songs contained in that volume. This index makes it
very easy to search for songs by starting words.

I will take a little detour here and talk about this index. You will realize the amount of momentous work that Harmandir Singh ji has done his effort to compile these volumes. The time when he was compiling these volumes, the computers were non-existent or and whatever was available, was so very primitive by today’s standards. In discussions with Harmandir ji, he once described to me how these indexes were compiled. Imagine a Geet Kosh volume, with anywhere from seven to ten thousand songs contained within, for a decade. The title line of each song was written on a single strip of paper, by hand. And then these strips were sorted alphabetically by hand, and mind you, by the Devnagari alphabetical sequence. And the process followed – you will be amazed. All the thousands of strips with song titles were thrown in the center of the room. And Harmandir, and his associates – family members and other friends – would start to pick up the strips one by one and arrange them in different piles by the letter of the alphabet. Once this task was done, then each pile was carefully reviewed again and sorted to bring them in sequential order. And from these individual sorted piles, the complete index would be transcribed once again. Imagine the scenario, and the amount of dedicated effort that has gone into this work. Harmandir ji would laugh when he described this, and added that especially, when it was summers, one could not put on the fan :). It certainly is to be admired, the effort and the dedication he has put into this compilation.

So, picking up the thread on this song itself. I went back into the index to search for this song, and surely found it – well at least the mukhda matched. But when I pulled up the indicated reference, neither the picture was ‘Rocket Girl’ and nor the singer was Kamal Barot. So I sent another message to AK ji with this information. By that time, apparently another reader on his blog had also put in another comment, suggesting the correction to the name of the film and the singer. OK, so that confirmed the antecedents of the song itself.

Now came the second part of AK ji’s message – can we upload this song? Gosh, who had heard of this film so pompously titled ‘Royal Mail’ from 1963. Who would think of lead actors like Mahesh Kumar and Ambika, and villains like Dalpat. Of the long list of actors, I could only recognize Rajan Haksar, Ram Avtar, Lakshmi Chhaaya and Shetty. Absolutely no clue about the film. But I would still look forward to the songs. For two reasons. The lyricist and the music director are very familiar – Indivar and Avinash Vyas. And secondly, the songs from such obscure and unknown films usually turn out to be a delightful treat. (I assure you this song is one such treat.)

So thinking about locating this song, I was wondering where to start looking, first in my collection. The entire details seemed so unfamiliar that I was almost sure I did not have it. But after a while something clicked in my mind – and I recalled that this film is possibly one of a set that a friend had shared with me on hard disk, many months ago. As I searched the CDs set and the hard disk, I finally came across this film, saved in the avi format. Wow, that is the aha moment I relish. After that it was the mechanical work of getting the song edited from the film and readying it for publishing.

So as the part of this process, I ended up watching the film in fast forward mode, of course pausing for the songs. And yes, the songs are surely a treat. The film itself is one of the many regular spin offs on the theme of ‘Zorro’. Those who have seen the film ‘Shabnam’ (1964, Mehmood and Vijaylakshmi) will find this story exactly the same. With some slight variations, the plot and the sequences are very similar. Only that a train called ‘Royal Mail’ appears in the storyline many times during the film. In fact this song is also picturized on this train itself.

The film is from Super Pictures, Bombay. It is directed by BJ Patel. The list of actors is given as Mahesh Kumar, Ambika, Rajan Kapoor, Ram Avtar, Babu Raje, S K Sham, Lakshmi Chhaya, Apsara, Dalpat Sattar, Akram, Abdul, Shetty, Bakshi, Bihari Singh. The lyrics for the six songs are written by Indivar and the music is by Avinash Vyas. This particular song is picturized on the lead pair of Mahesh Kumar and Ambika. The singing voices are those of Suman Kalyanpur and Badri Pawar. The name Badri Pawar did not sound very familiar, but as I checked the stats page, I find that Badri Pawar has already made a debut on the blog with another song. His voice is also heard in a group song from the film ‘Kahin Din Kahin Raat’ – “Jab Aa Hi Gaye Hain Dar Pe Tere”. In this film of course, he has sung one or two more songs.

Enjoy this light hearted, well paced simple and delightful song of young hearts in love. The rhythm is catchy, and the song is very hummable. I must thank the reader on AK ji’s blog, for posting the request, and introducing all of us to this delicious treat. Yet once again strengthening the belief that most B/C grade films have music and songs that is definitely A grade, and definitely need to be brought to the attention of the listeners.

Lyrics

chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi
kahin kaante kahin phulwaadi
mere dil ki adaa
nahin jaane zaraa
mera balmaa hai badaa anaadi
chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi

kabhi thham ke chale kabhi bhaage
badhhti hi jaaye aage
kabhi thham ke chale kabhi bhaage
badhhti hi jaaye aage
mujhe tujhse nahin o sajnaa
mujhe apne se darr laage
chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi
kahin kaante kahin phulwaadi
mere dil ki adaa
nahin jaane zaraa
mera balmaa hai badaa anaadi
chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi

hum do saathi albele
toofaanon mein sang sang khele

hum do saathi albele
toofaanon mein sang sang khele
aankhon mein pyaar ka jaadu
armaanon ke dil mein mele
chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi
kahin kaante kahin phulwaadi
mere dil ki adaa
nahin jaane zaraa
mera balmaa hai badaa anaadi
chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi

kaanton ko haar karenge
jeevan gulzaar karenge
kaanton ko haar karenge
jeevan gulzaar karenge
oonchi neechi raahon ko
hum mil kar paar karenge

chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi
kahin kaante kahin phulwaadi

mere dil ki adaa
nahin jaane zaraa
mera balmaa hai badaa anaadi

chali jaaye re jeevan ki gaadi

Sudhirji,
This is fantastic. Every time a reader on my blog asked for an obscure Kamal Barot song, you were able to locate it and post it. I had earlier described you as a magician. I have to think of some other term. Houdini was more famous for making big things vanish. You are making lost and small things appear. Thanks a lot.

That also shows we are living in a small and connected world. Thanks a lot for this gift. This is a great train song too.

Why not call Sudhir-ji ‘De-Houdini’ for doing exactly the opposite what Houdini did !!

AK ji,

Thanks so much for your comments. Sir, ye Hindi filmon ka sangeet hai hi kuchh aisi cheez, key kya kahen. I really relish the feeling when an old memory, lost for a long time, is located and revived. There are many such songs that I remember, and in the comments, one gets to know the wish list of other music lovers, as to what they are searching for. And when one is able to locate and share such a memory, it is a such a satisfying feeling of synthesis.

I am glad we are all connnected in this delightful endeavor.

Bharat ji,

Thanks again for your appreciation. I love being part of this group.

I am that reader of ‘songs of yore’ who is responsible for all that pain and strain you had to go through in digging out this song for me.I used to listen and like this song in childhood days and then it suddenly faded out.It kept on haunting me like all chidhood memories……………Sudhir Kapurji,’Thanks’ would be too small a word to express my joy when I am able to listen this song today after 50 odd years simply because of you!

Rakesh ji,

Your words mean a lot to me. And I am so happy that I have been able to gladden some loving moments and memories of childhood. I can also relate to the emotion, kyun ki aisa mere saath bhi kai baar huaa hai.

I read your comment on YouTube also, and appreciate your sentiments. And in turn, I must thank you also, for introducing me to this film and its delightful songs, by your query. Wo film itne mahinon se mere paas rakhi thi. Aap ka message nahin aata, to jaane aur kitne din aise hi padi rehti.

Avinash ji,

Very welcome to join into these moments of sentimental sharing. I thank you also for your kind words.

Cheers and regards all

Best method is to arrange the songs(films) yearwise then alphawise. This goes a long way in easy retrieval of the requisite song. In a jiffy.

Nitin ji,

Thanks for the additional inputs.

And sir, regarding the collection, mera effort to hamesha se hi rehta hai ke kisi hisaab se organized rahe, but just that it requires lot of effort on an ongoing basis. Almost every othere day, some new song, or new video clip or a new film reaches me through friends, through the blog, and through web surfing. (By new I mean something that has not be available yet or not in my collection yet). It is the updates and upkeep of these additions that takes away so much time. I am continuing to put effort on it. 🙂
