Today’s song is the last and final song of the film Pyar ki Jeet-1962.

The film was directed by Vasant Painter and the Lyricist was Qamar Jalalabadi (real name Om Prakash Bhandari). The music was composed by Sudhir Phadke. The cast of the film was Mahipal, Kalpana (her FIRST film), Indira, Heeralal, Ratnamala, Mohan Choti etc. etc.

The Hero, Mahipal is a dedicated Painter, who falls in love with a girl-Kalpana. The one line story of this film was “The painter keeps his love on hold, to achieve great success in painting”. This social love story was a complete flop and the film was withdrawn after just 7 days due to lack of audience. Possibly, the two reasons which caused the film to be a flop were….

1. Hero Mahipal was known exclusively for mythological films/costume or action films, and the new Heroine Kalpana could not impress the audience and
2. The storyline was very weak.

For Kalpana, the heroine, it was not a good omen and perhaps indicated her future in the Hindi films.

Kalpana (18 July 1946 – 4 January 2012), born Archana Mohan, was an actress who worked in Hindi cinema in the 1960s. She appeared with Shammi Kapoor in the 1962 film Professor, with Shashi Kapoor and Kishore Kumar in Pyar Kiye Jaa (1966), with Dev Anand in Teen Devian, with Pradeep Kumar in Saheli and with Feroz Khan in Tasveer and Teesra Kaun. Daughter of revolutionary Avani Mohan, she was also an accomplished Kathak dancer trained under Pandit Shambhu Maharaj. She lived in Pune with her family.[1] She lived for some time in Ambala Cantt. For some years she went to a school in Ambala Cantt. Her father was working in Khadi and village Industries Commission in the state office situated on Nicklson road in Ambala Cantt during 1962–63.

Kalpana Mohan was born as Archana Mohan in Srinagar on 18 July 1946. She was of Punjabi and Dogra descent. Her father, Avani Mohan, a freedom fighter and an active member of the All India Congress Committee, was close to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and other top Congress stalwarts. She was trained in Kathak and often invited by Nehru to dance at the Rashtrapati Bhavan whenever dignitaries visited.

Kalpana was spotted by actor Balraj Sahani and Urdu writer Ismat Chughtai, who encouraged her to come to Mumbai. Kalpana’s first film, Pyaar Ki Jeet, lasted a week in theatres. Her second film was Naughty Boy (1962). Her third film, Professor, released in 1962 was a rare entertainer, which left the viewers delighted and satisfied. It starred Shammi Kapoor, who earned a Filmfare nomination as Best Actor. In 1965, she had another successful film, Teen Devian, with Dev Anand. Her next film, the comedy Pyar Kiye Jaa came out in 1966. Kalpana also starred in Biwi aur Makan opposite Biswajit in 1966. She had a brief but successful stint in Bollywood in the 60’s and 70’s but stopped after she got married. Some of her last films were Saheli (1965), Picnic (1966), Tasveer (1966) and Nawab Siraj ud Daula in 1967.

Kalpana was married twice. In the mid-1960s, she married and quickly divorced screenwriter and film director Sachin Bhowmick. In 1967, she married an Indian Navy officer, with whom she had her only daughter. She divorced him in 1972. Despite raising her daughter alone, she made sure to give her the best education possible. She continued to live in Mumbai for a while but stopped acting to take care of her daughter. She moved to Kalyani Nagar in the eastern region of Pune in the early 1990s and spent her remaining life there after doctors advised a cleaner climate for her health. Her daughter married and moved to the United States with her husband. Kalpana lived by herself in Pune and her health started deteriorating.

In 2011, she had lodged a complaint at Khadak police station in Pune stating three people had allegedly made a fake memorandum of understanding by forging her signature. She alleged that they then sold her 56.18-hectare (138.8-acre) plot of land she owned in Mauje Visagar village to Sahara City builders in 2007 with her forged signature. The stress over this matter weakened her health even more.

Her daughter and son-in-law came from the US to take care of her as she was in treatment for cancer and suffered from a bout of pneumonia. She died at the age of 65 in the early hours of 4 January 2012 at the Pune Hospital and Research Centre due to cancer. She is survived by her daughter Preeti Mansukhani, son-in-law Harish and grandchildren Yash and Khushi. Her final rites were performed at the Vaikunth crematorium amidst family and close friends. The news of her death was brought to public several days later as her family knew that many people had their eyes on her property. (adapted from upperstall, muVyz, Chanderi Duniya, Ateet ke sitare, wiki and my notes).

Her most famous film Professor-1962 was a great Hit film. It was remade in Tamil as ” Nadigan”-1990 and twice in Telugu as ” Bhale Masturu”-1969 and ” Peddinti Alludu”-1991. It was also remade in Kannada as “Gopi Krishna”. The success of Professor-1962 was such that she started getting many film offers.

There were offers to feature Shammi Kapoor again as her Hero, but surprisingly Shammi Kapoor refused to work again with her in any film thereafter. It was a great surprise. However, the reason came out soon. The famous Cine-Journalist Devyani Chaubal of Star Dust revealed, on record, that Kalpana smelt very badly as if she had not taken bath in months. Later on, even Shammi Kapoor also gave statements to that effect in his interviews. This was surely a cause which shortened her film career.

In addition, Kalpana made another mistake. In every interview that she gave, she insisted that Professor-1962 was her Debut movie – which was a white lie. It was her third film. Her first film Pyar ki Jeet-1962, with Mahipal, was a flop film. When this fact was published she was criticised in Papers and magazines, which also affected her career.

Earlier in the 1940’s another actress Geeta Nizami also had the same reputation of smelling bad due to not bathing for days together. She had Lice in her hair too. No actor was ready to do close up scenes with her.

As far as hiding the Debut with less known Hero/Films/Songs was concerned, it was practiced by many artistes like Meena Kumari, Johnny Walker, Mala Sinha, Gulzar, Mahendra Kapoor, Sudha Malhotra, to name a few !

The Music Director of the film Pyar ki Jeet-1962, Sudhir Phadke, was not a very famous name in Hindi, but he was a Big Gun in the Marathi Film world. Sudhir Phadke ( July 25, 1919 – July 29, 2002) was an accomplished Marathi singer-composer. He was regarded as an icon of the Marathi film industry and Marathi Sugam Sangeet i.e. Bhavgeet (light music) for five decades. Apart from Marathi, Phadke sang and composed songs in several Hindi films as well. Phadke was affectionately known as Babuji (an honorary title given to respected gentlemen in India).

Sudhir Phadke was born in Kolhapur on July 25, 1919. His birth name was Ram Phadke, but he later changed his name to ‘Sudhir’ when he composed a song for HMV because he thought ‘Sudhir Phadke’ sounded more ‘weighty’. Phadke acquired his primary tutelage in vocal classical music from the late Vamanrao Padhye in Kolhapur. After beginning his career with HMV in 1941, he joined the Prabhat Film Company as music director in 1946. During his long career, he composed for many Marathi and Hindi films. He was also an immaculate playback singer. Phadke married his fellow singer Lalita Deulkar. Their son Shridhar Phadke (born 1951) is also a composer and singer.

Geet Ramayana, based on poet G D Madgulkar’s verses, is one of Phadke’s most popular works. The programme ran on All India Radio for a year, 1954-55. Stage performances of the program continue to draw huge crowds even today. Phadke set to music all 56 songs, and they were sung by different singers for radio (Manik Verma, Lata Mangeshkar, Phadke himself, Vasantrao Deshpande etc). All 56 songs were also recorded in Phadke’s own voice.
In the last days of his life, Phadke was involved in producing a Hindi film on the life of the Indian freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The movie Veer Savarkar was funded by public donations. Sudhir Phadke last sang and composed music for this movie.

Phadke was connected with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh for over 60 years. He was the main inspiration and founder member of India Heritage Foundation in the United States.

Sudhir Phadke gave music to 19 Hindi films from 1946 (Rukmini Swayamvar) to 1972 (Daraar). His famous film is Pehli Tarikh -54, in which he had composed the famous Kishore Kumar song- Din hai suhana aaj pehli tarikh hai. He also sang 14 songs in 9 Hindi films. A noteworthy fact about Sudhir Phadke is that during his peak period in Marathi films, he created a World Record. He teamed up with writer/poet G.D.Madgulkar (गदिमा , as he was known fondly in Maharashtra) and director Raja Paranjape. Together, as a team, they gave a total of 11 Hit films,in a row in 18 years- from 1948 to 1966 … a record for a Team. (Ack: Thanks to sudhirphadke.com, wiki and my notes).

With today’s song, all the songs of the film Pyar Ki Jeet-1962 are covered here, making the film a YIPPEED film.
