Lapak jhapak tu aare badarwaa

Posted on: November 8, 2008

This is supposed to be a comedy song sung by a lesser actor in the movie, and comedy is sought to be introduced by singing a semi classical song.

Under such circumstances, Manna Dey was the singer to turn to. And Manna Dey it was who sang this song.

But as things stand now, this song, that was there to provide comic relief to the audience is perhaps the most remembered part of this movie. This song has indeed effortlessly entered into the hall of fame of immortal Bolywood songs.

The lyrics were written by Shailendra and the music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. And their collaboration with Manna Dey led to this unforgettable song. And it is difficult to believe that this song is 55 years old. This song still sounds as fresh and refreshing as it has always sounded.

Thanks for posting this farmaish of mine, Atul.

Isn’t this song just terrific ? And the picturisation also is lively.

I am just thinking..I may need this as my “rain-exhortation” song if England get an upper hand against India in the upcoming series. 😉

Well, this calls for another tag- “rain song”. That way, it will become easier to search songs appropriate for such occasions.

You might appreciate this classic better by watching it again after reading my discussion entitled “The Lapak Jhapak approach to Bollywood, Indian aesthetics and Vedic ritual”

The contentious identity of the râga is also discussed and the solution proposed is that this illustrates the ‘semblance of râga’ (râgâbhâsa) that hovers between the KâNaDa and Malhâr families. There’s also a funny comparison to the Frog-Hymn of the Rig Veda…

Hi Atul,
This is a great song.
With Manna Dey, I think D V Paluskar has also sung in this song.
I may be wrong, about the name, but there is a classical singer, involved in this song.
Regards,
Dinesh
