O haseena zulfon waali jaane jahaan

Posted on: January 9, 2009

Shammi Kapoor helped launch the careers of many heroines, because he was one hero who was not averse to acting opposite raw youngsters. In fact, actresses like Saira Bano and Sharmila Tagore actually made their debuts opposite Shammi Kapoor and that helped their career take off.

When it came to music, Shammi was far too particular. It would be Shankar Jaikishan as music directors and Rafi as the playback singer. Of course, “Kashmir Ki Kali” had O P Nayyar, but then that movie was in 1961 towards the beginning of his bull run and O P Nayyar in any case was a big name.

In 1966, when Shammi Kapoor came to know that S D Burman’s son was to compose the music for his next movie “Teesri Manzil”, Shammi Kapoor was not pleased. Then he was given some samples of tunes that R D Burman had composed for the movie. Though unconvinced, Shammi Kapoor reluctantly gave in.

When the music of this song came in the market, they became big rage. R D Burman, who had made his debut in 1962 (Chhote Nawab) but had not got any more movie since, finally saw his career take off with “Teesri Manzil”.

Here is one of the iconic songs from this movie. Rafi sings with as much gutso as he always did, and here he is joined by Asha Bhonsle as well. Yes, R D Burman introduced a new facet of Asha Bhonsle’s singing prowess with this movie. And Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist.

Song-O haseena zulfon waali (Teesri Manzil) (1966) Singer-Rafi,Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

o haseenaa zulfon waali jaane jahaan
dhoondhti hain kaafir aankhen kisakaa nishaan
o haseenaa zulfon waali jaane jahaan
dhoondhti hain kaafir aankhen kisakaa nishaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan

wo anjaanaa dhoondhti hoon
wo deewaanaa dhoondhti hoon
jalaakar jo chhip gayaa hai
wo parwaanaa dhoondhti hoon

garm hai, sez hai, ye nigaahen meri
kaam aa, jaayegi sard, aahen meri
tum kisi, raah mein, to miloge kahin
are! ishq hoon, main kahin thahartaa hi nahin
main bhi hoon galiyon ki parchhaayi
kabhi yahaan kabhi wahaan
shaam hi se kuchh ho jaataa hai
mera bhi jaaduu jawaan

o haseenaa zulfon waali jaane jahaan
dhoondhti hain kaafir aankhen kiskaa nishaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan

wo anjaanaa dhoondhti hoon
wo deewaanaa dhoondhti hoon
jalaakar jo chhip gayaa hai
wo parwaanaa dhoondhti hoon

chhip rahe, hai ye, kyaa dhang hai aapkaa?
aaj to, kuchh nayaa, rang hai aapakaa
hai! aaj ki, raat main, kyaa se kyaa ho gayi
aha! aapki saadgi, to bhalaa ho gayi
main hi hoon galiyon ki parchhaayi
kabhi yahaan kabhi wahaan
shaam hi se kuchh ho jaataa hai
mera bhi jaadoo jawaan

o haseenaa zulfon waali jaane jahaan
dhoondhti hain kaafir aankhen kiskaa nishaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan

wo anjaanaa dhoondhti hoon
wo deewaanaa dhoondhti hoon
jalaakar jo chhip gayaa hai
wo parwaanaa dhoondhti hoon

thahariye, to sahi, kahiye kyaa naam hai
meri badnaamiyon ka wafaa naam hai
oho! qatl kar ke chale ye wafaa, khoob hai
hai! naadaan teri, ye adaa, khoob hai
main bhi hoon galiyon ki parchhaayi
kabhi yahaan kabhi wahaan
shaam hi se kuchh ho jaataa hai
mera bhi jaadoo jawaan

o haseenaa zulfon waali jaane jahaan
dhoondhti hain kaafir aankhen kiskaa nishaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan
mahfil mahfil ai shamaa phirti ho kahaan

wo anjaanaa dhoondhti hoon
wo deewaanaa dhoondhti hoon
jalaakar jo chhip gayaa hai
wo parwaanaa dhoondhti hoon!!!

I love this song, as well as all the others from this movie. Thanks for this great collection of songs that you have been writing about. You are bringing back a whole bunch of songs that many of us grew up listening to, and this in turn brings up a whole lot of sweet memories. Thanks.

Just a wild guess – the drummer at 0:22 appears to be Salim Khan ( of Salim-Javed). I had seen young Salim in one of the advertisements that used to appear in cinema theaters before the start of the movies.

Kamath ji,
Salim khan has a small role in this film,he is the friend of Rocky, the drummer-Shammi Kapoor. To avoid the ire of Asha Parekh, shammi Kapoor asks Salim khan to work as a drummer instead of him and in the process,Salim khan gets beaten by Asha and her friends.
Salim khan joined the industry to become a Hero, but only could get small roles in many films. Then he turned to writing and……… rest is history,as they say.

Wow! One of the best Rafi – Shammi songs, what a peppy number. All time hit number. I have also seen that most of the Asha Rafi duets are good, there was some magic when these two sang together.
