Muthukodi kawaadi hadaa

Posted on: April 12, 2009

In Bollywood movies, singing any kind of songs is mostly the preserve of Hero and Heroine. One important category of songs that they sing is love songs. There too, some conventions have been set. For instance, the love songs would be sung in a very upscale dignified way, with refined sophisticated lyrics and the two characters acting in a socially acceptable way viz acting coy and restrained.

But then there were some comedians who became so popular that they too began to command a song in the movie. And the biggest comedian of those days was Mahmood. He was so popular that he often gave a complex to the hero of his movie.

Since Mehmood used to enjoy good clout in a movie, it was only natural that he too would get at least a song to sing. These songs were mostly comedy songs and would turn out to be hugely popular ( for instance- “ham kaale hain to kyaa hua dilwaale hain”).

If Mehmood was shown romancing in these movies, then that gave an opportunity for him to sing a love song as well, but unlike the love songs picturised on lead actors, love songs on Mehmood were sought to be comedy songs, as if comedians are not allowed to be serious even while they are in love.

Take this song from “Do Phool” for instance. In this song, Mehmood is romancing a girl, but it is picturised in a manner as to amuse the spectators. Unlike the slow and genteel manners adopted in most Bollywood love songs, here Mehmood and the girl jump vigourously up and down. They are not at all coy or shy or subtle or discreet about their love for each other, nor do they use sophisticated high sounding words outside their vocabularies. And to add further comic effect, they dance around coconut trees ( hero- heroine on the other hand would run around trees of some more dignified species).

And believe it or not, this kind of love songs became the norm even among the hero and the heroine within a decade. Jeetendra- Sri Devi for instance began to sing and dance similarly in 1980s. That way, this song is not just a comedy song. it is a song that pioneered the genre of vigourous love songs in Bollywood. 😉

This song and this movie bring back so many memories.
I saw “Do Phool” as a young boy.
My best memory of that movie is at the start of the movie with a hilarious song “Maaf karo”. The heroes teasing the heroines. Later there is another version of the song – with the heroines getting back at the heroes. Please post both versions if you can. Colourful, to say the least.

Coming to this song, I did not realise it earlier but you are right. Later on in his career Jeetendra danced pretty much like Mehmood here. South Indian directors were not particularly subtle when it came to dance sequences. 🙂

The blockbuster movie Aankhen starring Govinda and Chunky Pandey was in fact a remake of Do Phool.

The lady who lip syncs for this song is RAMA PRABHA (must be popular Tamil actress, also acted in a Kannada Movie “Devara Kannu”)
I think she married popular Tamil movie actor Sharat Babu(who acted in Zayed khan,Isha Shrvani,Minissha Lamba starrer recent movie 2006 Rocky & 1995 Criminal(starring Manisha Koirala, Nagarjuna,Ramya Krishna)
Sharat babu(or spelt as Sarat Babu)and Rama Prabha were already divorced I think.

Any one know the meaning of line “Muttukkodi kawwadi hadaa”???? If YES, please …………..tell

This song is a copy of a tamil song picturised on Manorama Aachi and Nagesh in the movie Anubavi Raja Anubavi.

Muthukullika vaaregala means – are you willing to take a bath in the sea to pick up gemstones and conches from the sea.. As such the word doesn’t have any meaning. It is more like a jargon. To be frank, I feel Mahmood was highly over-rated. The fact is that there was no competition for him during those days (sigh… in a country like India where there is such a huge population, Bollywood depended only on one comedian). He carried the aping of Tamilians a bit too far. In fact the 2nd part of Padosan is a huge drag. The way he speaks Hindi is not how Tamilians speak – but it is more like how Hyderabadi Muslims speak Hindi. Sorry to say this – but he is not match for Tamil actors Nagesh (somewhat overrated) and the underrated Chandrababu. The latter lost out on movies due to his abrasive nature and drinking problem. These guys were unable to handle their success.
Comedians like Johny Walker & Deven Varma were far better ; additionally the way Mahmood used Aruna Irani and exploited her makes way for a sordid tale. Luckily Aruna realised that she was being taken for a ride and quickly distanced herself from the aging comedian.
