3998 Post No. : 15095

Yesterday (26th June) there was a discussion on the ‘Atulites Whatsapp group’ regarding songs containing the word ‘June’ in them. I thought that some of us would definitely point out this song – how can seventies’ fans miss this. So, our beloved Raja ji pointed out this song and reminding it that it was quite a popular song in those days. I must be 2/3 years old then, so I can’t say much about this 🙂 but, after listening this song now, I can say that it’s tune is quite nice and enjoyable and one can easily be humming this song after listening to it once.

I had come across this song few months back during my routine browsing, and since the starting of this month – ‘June’, I wanted to share the song during this month. I was thinking of sharing this song, but as the month progressed it was very hectic on work front for me and it slipped out of mind. But nevertheless, since yesterday’s discussion I thought we still have few days in this month of June and can enjoy this song.

The song is from the 1970 movie ‘Jawaab’ and it is picturised on the favourite comic side plot jodi of the seventies i.e. Mehmood and Aruna Irani. I was also wondering how our regular Mehmood fans have missed this song or maybe they have shared and waiting for its posting. By Mehmood fans I mean our respected Atul ji and Nalini ji. I apologize Atul ji, if he already had a post on this song in his mind. And if he has any, I would like that he present this song with his post here, because all his posts on Mehmood are very very nice and enjoyable.

The following other songs were noted during the discussion.

  • Hai ye June ka maheena – from the 1962 movie ‘Mud Mud Ke Naa Dekh’ – and this also is yet to be posted on the blog!!
  • The other song having the world June is ‘Mere Piyaa gaye Rangoon’

The movie ‘Jawaab’ was directed by Ramanna for RR Pictures, Madras’.  It had Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Jeetendra, Leena Chandavarkar, Prem Chopra, Jyothi Lakshmi, Ulhas, Aruna Irani, Rajan Haksar, Leela Mishra, Prem Kumar, Madhumati, Kanhaiyya, Lakshmi, Pandey, Indra Acharya and Mehmood.

NS Bedi was the dialogue director for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by MS Money. Dialogues of this movie were written by Rajinder Krishan who also wrote the lyrics for all the six songs of this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Lakshmikant-Pyaarelal. Asha Bhonsle, Hemlata, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

From the re-certification date of the movie (available online) – 15.07.1980, it can be concluded that it was originally passed by Censor on 15.07.1970). Two songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog earlier.

This song is a fun love song picturised in a well and when Mehmood is there its entertaining and enjoyable given his own specialities. When I noted the lyrics from the video, the mukhda of this song goes like ‘aaja meri jaan ye hai june ka maheena, june ka maheena hai ye june ka maheena’. However, there is one audio version where the second line of the mukhda is different and having the words as ‘garmi hi garmi, paseena hi paseena’. Except this change in mukhda and “zulfon ki chhaon mein…” in place of “palkon ki chhaon mein bitthaa le o haseena”, rest of the lyrics are same in both versions. HFGK Vol – IV in its listing of this song also mentions the song title as “aaja meri jaan ye hai june ka maheena, garmi hi garmi, paseena hi paseena”, though I could not get to refer the appendices of this Vol IV of HFGK so I am not aware if any additional information about this is noted there. It seems that the first mukhda was overlaid later, in the movie version, before released. Possibly some objection by the censors. The change can be noticed in the lip movements of Mehmood.

Well, as Raja ji mentioned “though the Monsoon has started over and spreading its ‘wings’ across, some parts of the country still may be hot and humid”. So for those areas where monsoon has not yet reached, I think the words “garmi hi garmi, paseena hi paseena” and this song is still very applicable 🙂 .

Let us now enjoy this song…

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 3
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Okay, okay, just before you sit up and ask again – “ये क्या हो रहा है”, a quick reminder that we are into this series of repeat songs. This is the third episode today.

There are well known, as well as obscure, instances existing in which the reused songs appear in the list of the songs of the latter film. The reuse listing of the song can appear as it is – a few examples being,

  • “Gori Zulm Karey Zulf Ka Bikhar Jaana” – this song appears in the listings for the film ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’ (1961) and the film ‘Pyaar Banaa Afsaana’, an unreleased film from 1960s.
  • The four songs of the film ‘Ram Rajya’ of 1943 are reused in the film ‘Ramayan’ of 1954
    “Beena Madhur-Madhur Kachhu Bol…”
“Ajab Vidhi Ka lekh Kisi Se Padha Nahi Jaaye…”
“Jhoole Mein Jhool Laal, Jhool Tu Jhool…”
“Tyagmayi Tu Gayi, Teri Amar Bhaawna…”
Note: The music director for both films is same – Shankar Rao Vyas; and the lyricist of these four songs is also the same – Ramesh Gupta.
  • “Beeti Jaat Barkha Ritu Saajan Nahin Aaye” – this song appears in the listings for the film ‘Muraad’ (1939) and the film ‘Dharam Bandhan’ (1940).
  • Four songs of an unreleased film ‘Parda’ from late 1940s are reused in the film ‘Achhaa ji’ of 1950
‘Taqraar Ko Badal Do Pyaar Mein, Na Karo Chhed Bekaar Mein…’
‘Bhool Hai Kisi Ko Apnana, Vichaaron Mein Basana…’
‘Kisi Ke Bholepan Ne… Mere Mann Ko Kheencha…’
‘Bhar Jaaye Aasmaan To Aahon Ki Kya Khata…’
Note: The lyricist (Indiwar) and music director (Shyam Babu Pathak) are the same. The film director (SH Thirani) is also the same.
  • Six songs of the 1957 film ‘Pawanputra Hanuman’ have been reused in the 1969 film ‘Hanuman Chalisa’.
  • Strange occurrence – two films of the same year, 1958 – ‘Rifle Girl’ and ‘Miss Toofaan Mail’ share the song – “Bheegi Hawa Mausam Jawaan, Masti Mein Dooba Saara Jahaan…”.
  • Rare occurrence, the same song is used in three films. The song is “Bhiksha De De Maiya Pingla, Jogi Khada Hai Dwaar…”. The films are ‘Bharthari’ (1944), ‘Raajyogi Bharthari’ (1954), and ‘Gopichand Bharthari’ (1965). Lyricist identified for these songs is Pandit Indra.
  • The song “Bolo Jaywantrao Ek Naam Prem Bhara. . .” appears in ‘Mera Imaan’ (1934) and ‘Swadesh Dewa’ (1946).
  • Interesting re-use – the song “Phool Chun Le Mere Baalam Ki Jaane Kab Daal Jhuke” appears in ‘Naubahaar’ of 1952 and then again in ‘Firdaus’ of 1953. Artist combination is the same – Sahir, Roshan, Lata.
  • Another one – “Baat Chalat Nai Chunari Rang Daali” – appears in film ‘Ladki’ of 1953 and then again in ‘Rani Roopmati’ of 1959.

Then there are films with the same list of songs.

  • ‘Satyanarayan’ of 1948 and ‘Bhikhaari’ of 1949
  • ‘Sushila’ of 1966 and ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ of 1977
  • ‘Amar Kahaani’ of 1949 and ‘Kanchan’ of 1955
  • ‘Sipaahi’ of 1941 and ‘Jangi Jawaani’ of 1943
  • ‘Suhaana Geet’ of 1941 and ‘Toote Dil’ of 1947
  • ‘Ram Bhakti’ of 1958 and ‘Bhakt Raaj’ of 1950
  • ‘Paanch Dushman’ of 1973 and ‘Daulat Ke Dushman’ of 1987

Although not specifically confirmed, in most cases, the above list of film pairs with all songs the same, the situation is that the latter film is a somewhat modified, re-certified and re-released version of the earlier film.

The above sampling is in no way exhaustive. More such instances may be discovered by a more meticulous review of the song lists in Geet Kosh.

But then, this observation has also to be annotated by saying that there are exceptions. There are many known cases where the repeat songs do not appear in the official list of songs of the film. The song may have been used as is without any modifications. The song may be used as an abridged version i.e. the stanzas used in repeat form are less than the original version. Or even when the song may be used quite differently.

These repeat instances of songs do not appear in the list of songs of the latter film. This is confirmed by a quick review of the Geet Kosh listings, which are primarily based on the information from the film booklets, and/or information printed on the gramophone records – 78 rpm records or LPs/EPs. Casual reuse, we may call it. Of course, ownership / copyright / permissions etc. are things that have to be taken care of. But it is always fun to be watching a film (especially when watching for the first time), and one is suddenly confronted with an unexpected song. The song already has a life and existence of its own. And it has its own popularity and following. All of a sudden out of the blue, the song will make a surprise appearance in another film, in another time. And one is simply – wow, एसा भी होता है – such things happen too.

The first song in this series – “Aa Ja Re Pardesi. . .” belongs to this category. As does this fun song that I bring to your notice today. An iconic song – a very typical and very strongly a Mehmood song, from the earlier film ‘Gumnaam’ from 1965, makes an unexpected and surprise appearance in the 1968 film ‘Brahmchaari’. This time around, the song is performed by the Junior incarnation of Mehmood, and he has done a superlative job of presenting this song. This song does not appear in the list of songs of the film ‘Brahmchaari’, and hence, when it appears in the film, the mind takes a double take – okay wow, this song, here.

The situation can be labeled as a ‘male-child item song’ 🙂 . It is just there, does not really add to the storyline content of the film. The children of Shammi Kapoor’s private orphanage are together, along with Mohan Choti, the handy man around the house, and Rajshri, who has descended on to this ‘family’ as a distraught outsider with no place to go. The song is heard on a gramophone player, on which the 78 rpm record is playing.

As I said earlier, Junior Mehmood has done a remarkable job performing this song, at that age. Born in 1956, he was all of 12 years old when he performed this song. A little short in height for his age, this performance is really lovable.

This video clip contains two stanzas, one less from the original three. However, my hunch is that all three were initially included when ‘Brahmchaari’ was released. In this video clip also, as the action moves from the first to the second stanza, there is slight jump in the visual, indicating there might have been a cut made – and the middle stanza was deleted later, for whatever reason.

Avinash ji has been posting a mini series on Junior Mehmood performances in Hindi films, so I will skip getting into more details about this fun child artist. Somehow the natural transformation, as these child artists move from childhood to adolescence to adulthood, does not seem to happen. The success of what their performance is, and the kudos it has drawn, continues to overshadow this required transformation as one grows in years. Very few examples are where an artist of proven merit in child roles has also made a successful career once having grown up. But that discussion is maybe another article, or another series.

Meanwhile, enjoy this really likeable performance, which I am sure will prompt you to go and take a look at the original ‘Gumnaam’ song also. I myself sure did.

Missing Films of 1960s – 102
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As I checked the listings today, I find there still are a good about dozen films of 1960s, and this homework list, that are traceable, available and have to be covered. I was earlier thinking may be just four or five more to go. Ok so, abhi to we are in good stride here, and hope to complete the available list in the next about two weeks. 🙂

Today’s film is ‘Soldier’ from 1969. This film also has an alternate name – ‘Thakur Diler Singh’. And so on YouTube, we find songs available by both names. The film is produced under the banner of PS Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Shyam. An short list of actors – Kumar Ajeet, Deepa, Shyam Kumar, Rajan Haksar, Randhir, Pal Sharma, Parasram, Jagdev, and Bilkis Shabnam.

The Geet Kosh lists 5 songs for this film. All songs are from the pen of Aziz Kashmiri, and the music is by the duo of Sonik Omi. Aziz Kashmiri, by this time in his career, was seasoned songwriter. His active career starts at the beginning of the 1940s, and goes all the way to mid 1970s – a recognized body of work of about 230+ songs from about 50 films. To his credit are such notable films as ‘Himmat’ (1941), ‘Iraada’ (1944), ‘Khamosh Nigaahen’ (1946), ‘Mirza Sahiban’ (1947),’Ek Thi Ladki’ (1949), ‘Dholak’ and ‘Sabz Baagh’ (both 1951), ‘Aag Ka Driya’ and ‘Ek Do Teen’ (both 1953), ‘Dekhi Teri Bambai’ (1961), ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’, ‘Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi’ and ‘Akalmand’ (all 1966) etc. His last film, as per Geet Kosh, is ‘International Crook’ from 1974.

Today’s song is in the voice of Asha Bhosle. Although the video clips of some songs of this film are available, for this particular song, I could locate only the audio clip. From the sound of it, it seems to be a group dance situation. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to add more information about this song.

Another player from 1960s makes its debut on our blog.  Listen to and enjoy this wonderful creation.

Blog Day : 3898 Post No. : 14946

Little earlier in the day, Atul ji mentioned about the timing of posting of Holi songs, and I quote,

Different festivals remain topical for different duration of time. If we do not post a write up within this time then the post loses its relevance. In case of Holi, it is the first half of the day mostly when people are mostly in festive mood, though it spills over to the afternoon as well.

As I am rushing to complete this post, it is already around 6 pm. Yes, the festivities for the day have been over for some time. Mostly the people have cleaned up and many would have had their afternoon siestas too. Maybe the only remaining sign of the festivities from earlier part of the day are the splashes of colored water on walls and floors, which most people would address tomorrow morning. Ah yes, another lingering evidence of the celebration could be some people still in the hangover of the bhaang, maybe still sleeping it off, or if awake, not yet back from the cuckoo land. 🙂

This post is coming somewhat late in the day, but the attempt is cover an important aspect of the celebrations of today. The festival of Holi, for ages now, has been intimately associated with the story of Lord Krishna. And so, the celebration somehow does not seem to be complete without having one song about Holi in Biraj, or Brij, the native place where the child Krishna grew up. There abound many a legends and folk songs that tell of the Holi celebrations when Krishna was in Brij. And the same has also been carried over into the Hindi films. Many a songs of Holi in Hindi films revolve around the stories and pastimes of Krishna.

I present this lovely Holi song from the 1970 film ‘Mastaana’. The lyrics for this song have been sent in by dear Prakash ji.

Produced under the banner of Suchitra and directed by A Subbarao, the cast of actors in this film is Mehmood, Padmini, Vinod Khanna, Bharti, Rehman, Bobby, Shyama, Ramesh Dev, Manorama, Mukri, Leela Mishra, Kamal Kapoor, Shivraj, Paro, Narbada Shankar, Mumtaz Begum, Raj Kishore, Jankidas, Ravikant, Prabhat Kumar, Habeeb, and Guddi.

The song is written by Anand Bakshi and the music composition is by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. We have three singing voices in this song – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Mukesh. Interestingly, Asha ji’s voice is used as playback for three artists on screen – Padmini, the child actor Bobby who plays the role of child Krishna in this song, and Bharati. Rafi Sb’s voice is used for playback for Mehmood and Mukesh’s voice for Vinod Khanna. Another dear song that I was not aware that it has not yet been posted here.

Interesting part of the song – it uses four different folk dance forms. Initially it is the typical filmi style choreography that is used. Then later in the song, we see the four flavors, and the language of the chorus also gets modified accordingly. First we have the typical Brij rendition and folk dance. Then we have the Punjabi bhangra and Punjabi words in the chorus. This is followed by Gujarati dandia raas, with Gujarati words in the chorus. And then we have the Maharashtra folk dance steps, and Marathi words in the chorus. Very interestingly done. 🙂

Greetings for the festival yet once more before the day is out. Well, it is still daytime in other parts of the world. Khyati Ben is probably just in the process of waking up, and for her, the planning and cooking and the celebration is still to happen. 🙂  Krishna makes his appearance for the festivities and we all wish everyone, a very happy and colorful ambiance of this festival to last and continue through to the next year. And then, we shall have more songs to post. 🙂

Happy Holi.

Blog Day : 3883 Post No. : 14910

———————————————–
Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 12
————————————————

Ten years ago, this day in 2009, the film ‘Darling Darling’ made its debut on our blog. This 1977 production from Fortune Films International, has six songs. The song that brought in this film to our blog is the Kishore Kumar favorite – “Aise Na Mujhe Tum Dekho”.

Then, over the past decade, only one more song of this film was added. And now, in the 10 Year Challenge series, we are bringing on the third song of this film. An interesting side thought – maybe in the years to come, this blog and its data, relating to various stats, as well as patterns of how the films went from debut to yippee, will become fodder for PhD research projects at universities that have film studies departments. Research scholars will be analyzing such data to find correlations between the patterns of appearance of the songs of a film, and the perceived quality of its music, and its popularity curve. Interesting food for thought, right?

This 1977 film of Dev Anand, is not his own Navketan production. It was still the 1970s, and despite a descending graph, Dev Anand was still in demand enough to be called upon by other friendly production houses to play the lead role. In 1977, he was in his 54th year, and still going strong as the hero.

The film, from the banner of Fortune Films International, was directed by Gogi Anand. The star cast of this film reveals many a names which can be considered as fixtures in Dev Anand films; check out the names – Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, Mehmood, Jeevan, Nadira, Dhiraj Kumar, Poonam, Durga Khote, Sajjan, Helen, Ranjan, Raj Verma, Shivraj, Shaifali, V Gopal, Jankidas, Hercules, Jhankna Desai, Geeta Khanna, Juliyan, Baby Guddi, Baby Padmini, Monto, Sheikh, Beerbal, Shahid Bijnauri, and Dhanna.

This song is performed in a mental asylum – a device that is used by directors to inject free format comic relief into the storyline. Dev Anand and Mehmood are leading the song performance. Dev Anand is sporting a full  beard as part of a disguise, and Mehmood appears in a tie and his birthday suit – well, almost 🙂 . As the song progresses, one realizes that they are on a search and rescue mission of some sort, as we see interludes of familiar faces as captives under duress. We get fleeting glimpses of Zeenat Aman, Sajjan and Nadira. We have already had a glimpse of Jeevan, in the very first scene of this song, leaving the premises with a large suitcase in his hand. One can also identify junior actor Sheikh, just behind Dev Anand and Mehmood, as the opening lines of this song are being rendered. I am sure there are more junior artists in this crowd of ‘mad’ persons which can be named, but I am not able to identify more.
[Note: Regulars will recall actor Sheikh – he has performed on screen, the iconic qawwaali “Hamen To Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne“, in the film ‘Al Hilal’ (1958).]

The song is penned by Anand Bakshi and the music composition is by RD Burman. The singing voices are of Kishore Kumar and Mehmood.

This brings on the third song of this film – across a span of ten years. 🙂

Song – O Laila, Tujhe Dhoondhe Tera Chhaila  (Darling Darling) (1977) Singer – Kishore Kumar, RD Burman, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – RD Burman
Unidentified Male Voice
Chorus

tujhe dhoondhe tera chhaila..aa

Blog Day : 3805 Post No. : 14800

There was a time when Blog century used to be so common that there used to be as many as two such occasions every month. How times have changed. Now we have one blog century in two months !

Song post number 14600 was covered on August 2018. Next song post number 14700 was covered on 17 october 2018. Now more than two months (62 days) later, at a strike rate of less than two songs a day, now we reach song post number 14800 !

I am not able to specifically pinpoint the reasons for this slow progress. There may be several reasons. One reason could be that I have become “busy”. I would summarily reject this reason. I am not busy any more than what I was during 2011 and 2012 when the blog saw centuries every 16 days. I still recall some music lovers complaining that theere were far too many song notifications every day spamming the inboxes of the subscribers. 🙂 And curiously enough, I used to think that the number of songs being posted those days was rather low. 🙂

One reason for slow progress these days coould be because we have become rather conscious of “records”, unlike the case in the past. During 2011 and 2012, we were not conscious about YIPPEE movies, debutant movies, count of songs in the movie etc. Yhose were simple days when we just covered songs as they occured to us, with far less planning. Today, considerable time is taken up in deciding which song to cover. Since so many thousands of songs have already been covered, searching for songs to cover also takes time now a days. So many songs from yesteryears have been covered that every new song that we discuss from those years appears like a gold dust to me. Unlike in the past, we rarely discuss songs composed by Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, O P Nayyar, S D Burman etc mainly because bulk of the songs of these composers have already been covered and we are now scraping the bottom of the barrel, as far as remaining songs of these composers are concerned.

Same is the case for singers like say Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Suraiyya etc. Bulk of songs sung by them have already been covered. In case of K l Saigal and Suraiyya, we have covered each and every song that is available.

During the early days of the year 2018, our new year resolution of covering one debutant song and ne YIPPEE song daily was adhered to with great discipline for the first four months before this resolution had to be abandoned.

Though we in the blog seem less prolific this days, but that is more than compensated by the research work related to HFM that goes on in the background. The well researched articles full of difficult to find information that our inhouse researchers, Mr Arunkumar Deshmuh and Mr Sadanand Kamath regularly come up with have added considerably to our knowledge of forgotten artists and movies of the past. Mr Sudhir Kapur has been digging up forgotten movies of 1960s, some of them so obscure that no details were known about them till they were discussed here. So, we many have slowed down in number of posts, but the quality of posts by our inhouse research scholars remains as high as ever.

Peevesie’s mom, despite being busy, heroically comes up with articles on the occasion of anniversaries of artists and also blog regulars. Regulars like Prakashchandra, Avinash Scrapwala, Mahesh Mamadapur etc silently keep adding value to the blog. So we continue to forge ahead, even if at a slow pace than before

Whenever we discuss a blog century song, we try to combine it with some other special occasion. This blog century post number 13800 is no different. We combine this article with the blog century of an artist. With this song, lyricist Yogesh completes one hundred songs in the blog.

I have gone through the filmography of Yogesh. Here I present the full filmography of Yogesh. This should serve as a ready reference as far as the HFM career of Yogesh is concerned.

I request reders to point out errors/ omissions in the filmography so that it can be made better and more compelete.

Coming to the song under discussioon, the song is from “Mazaaq”(1975). This by now forgotten movie was directed by Kumar for Indira Films Bombay. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Mausami Chatterji, Aruna Irani, Ifthikhar, Mehmood, Mridula, Bhagwan, Kanhaiyyalal, Agha, Keshto Mukherji, Mukri, Ridku, Shakeel, Ratan Gaurang, Gopal Mukherji, Samar Roy, V Gopal, Viju Khote, Asrani etc in it. The movie had guest appearances by Shubha Khote, Ravi Ghosh, Paintal, and special appearances by Basu Chatterji and S Ramnathan.

This movie had only two songs in it. First song is covered in the past.

Here is the second and final song from “Mazaaq”(1975) to appear in the blog. The song is a two part song. Part one is sung by Mohammed Rafi and it is lip synced by Vinod Mehra. Part II is a duet which is sung by Mohammed Rafi and Mehmood. It is picturised on Vinod Mehra and Mehmood. The song can be described as the title song as well as “advice” song.

Yogesh is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

I vaguely remember having heard this song and then I forgot all about this song. It was only while searching for this song and playing it that I realised that I had last heard this song more than four decades ago ! Needless to state that I had no clue about the details of this song.

In a way, this forgotten gem of a song is a song fit to be covered as a special song in the blog.

With this song, the blog ticks one more landmark. Let us hope that this musical bandwagon, whicgh is moving at a slow pace will soon gain some momentum and will hopefully pick up the speed of train 18, if not bullet train. 🙂

I take this opportunity to thank one and all whose continued support and well wishes are the fuel on which this music bandwagon feeds.

paagal zamaane mein
is paagal khaane mein
sabse tu paagal jee ban ke mil
paagal zamaane mein
is paagal khaane mein
sabse tu paagal jee ban ke mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
paagal zamaane mein

sabse tu paagal jee ban ke mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil

duniya ka ye mela

aandhi mein jaise chiraag
kaisi hai ye uljhan

utna hi uljhe dimaag
kaabil to bhookha mare
paagal jo chaahe kare
kaisa hai mazaak
paagal zamaane mein
is pagal khaane mein
sabse tu pagal jee ban ke to mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
arre sun ae mere dil

jal mein dhobi pyaasa
jab dekha ye tamaasha
tab jaa ke samjha main baat
jab tak khud na chaahen
nahin dhoonden khud hum raahen
dega nahin koi saath
matlab ka hai ye jahaan
inan hai aise yahaan
bolen din ko raat
paagal zamaane mein
is pagal khane me
sabse tu pagal jee ban ke to mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
are sun ae mere dil

Hullo Atulites

“Sadhu Aur Shaitaan” (1968) was directed by A. Bhimsingh and starred Mehmood, Om Prakash and Pran in important roles. It also had south star Bharathi, Kishore Kumar and Nasir Hussain in the cast.

Om Prakash played an honest bank employee where Nasir Hussain is the manager. Pran played Sher Khan alias Dilawar Khan a dacoit who seeks out his old friend Om Prakash and cheats him into accepting him into his household. His main intention is to rob the bank where Om Prakash is employed for which he manages to make duplicate locker keys and also achieves his goal. Nasir Hussain suspects Om Prakash and calls the police.

The rest of the movie goes in showing how Om Prakash proves his innocence with Mehmood and Bharathi’s help. In the course of this Pran is killed and the body is dumped under the back seat of Mehmood’s taxi. A considerable length of the movie is taken up in showing how the various passengers who hire the cab react when they see the body under the seat. And the list of passengers contains names of the who’s who of the film industry of that time- Sunil Dutt, Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Mumtaz, Lalitha Pawar, Jeewan, Nirupa Roy, Tun Tun, Mukri, etc. etc.

Today(23 july 2018) on the occasion of the death anniversary of Mehmood let us have a song from this movie which shows him in his elements. He replays his “hum kale hain toh kya hua” character with Bharathi as the person he is trying to woo. It is sung by Mehmood and Mohd Rafi. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and the Shankar Jaikishan like music is by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

I have mentioned in the past that the lead actors of Hindi movies did not seem to work for a living. They would only sing songs. Even in movies where lead actors were shown as workers of some sort, they were only shown pursuing activities that would lead to song opportunities. We even have war movies and spy movies that have become memorable not for war scenes or spying scenes but for their songs.

I have noticed that working, and especially working in “menial jobs” was regarded as stuff for small time actors. Working is “menial jobs” was often depicted as comedy.

Mehmood, a leading comedian of his era, was an actor who often seemed to me to be the only person in the movie to be actually working while most other actors were not. He would be a butler in “Gumnaam”(1965), kabaadiwaala in “Neelkamal”(1968), rickshaw waala in “Chhoti Bahan”(1959), music teacher in “Padosan” (1968), Bus Conductor in “Bombay To Goa” (1972), to name just some of his movies.

Even when he indulged in the main pastime of Hindi actors, viz falling in love, he seemed to be his feet firmly planted in ground, unlike heroes who lived in fantasy world.

Take this song from “Suhaagraat”(1968) for instance. This song takes a real hard look at the life of a married life. While most married people think of saali, Mehmood tells us that it is the lady’s brother, rather than the sister, that one should be wary of. Most legendary lovers (like Raanjha, Romeo etc )have suffered at the hands of the brothers of their lovers, he informs us.

Here is the nice song from “Suhaagraat”(1968). It is sung by Manna Dey. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a light hearted song on Mehmood.

This song is the sixth and final song from “Suhaagraat”(1968) to appear in the blog. Details of the five songs that have already been covered in the past are given below:-

mere dil se dil ko jod do
mere dil se dil ko jod do

rustam bhi ho mar jaayega
potto rustam bhi ho mar jaayega
are logon
ye haalat dekh lo
ho jo saale to shaadi mat karo re
ho jo shale to shaadi mat karo
aur kar li to

to kar li to duniya chhod do
mere dil se dil ko jod do
mere dil se dil ko jod do
ya to jaan meri jaan ab chhod do
aslam vaalekum

Here is the fifth and final song from “Anokhi Ada”(1973) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

This song is picturised on Mehmood and Padma Khanna. I have not watched the movie so I have no idea what is going on in the picturisation. My guess is that this song is past of a comic side plot of the movie where Mehmood eats a tablet to become younger but ends up becoming older. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

With this song, “Anokhi Ada”(1973) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Jawaani tera bolbaala (Anokhi Ada)(1973)Singers-Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Chorus

jawaani
jawaani

budhaape tera munh kaala
jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala
haaye
wo bhi kya din thhe
jab hum haseen thhe

mast bana deta thha hamko
paani ka ik pyaala
jawani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala

kya ho gaye re saanwariya
wo baal kaale kaale
kya ho gaye re saanwariya
wo baal kaale kaale
dekhe nahin jaate re sainya
ye gaal dheele dhaale
wo roop rang saajan
kisne utaar daala

jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala

chaaha thha jawaan hoke main
har naari ko sunder dekhoon
jo chehra dikhe na baahar
main parde ke andar dekhoon
is liye khaayi thhi goli
lekin ye kisko khabar thhi
wo zaalim goli kar degi
yoon mera deewaala
jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala

chaahe to jatan main kar doon
aaja balamwa pyaaare
chaahe to jatan main kar doon
aaja balamwa pyaare
garwa mere lag lag ke
phir se jawaan ho jaa re
ye sir ka baal sajna
ho jaaye phir se kaala

jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala
jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala
