‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 7
———————————————————

When I started as a ‘new contributor’ to this blog I had shared a Kishore Kumar song from the movie ‘Paanch Dushman-1973’ to Atul ji.
I was in fact not aware of this song before that, and it was my boss then, who, noticing my interest in music, had asked me about the link of the song.
He in turn was asked by one of his friends who was looking for this song. Both were aware of few lines of this song and about the singer only, and nothing more – like about the movie’s name etc. I was successful in locating this song. Later I also shared it to the blog. This song was posted on the blog on October 03, 2012.

The movie ‘Paanch Dushman-1973’ itself was an ‘obscure movie’ for me. However, our inhouse encyclopaedia Shri. Arunkumar ji, in his comment on this post, had mentioned in detail about this movie which I am reproducing here below.

October 03, 2012
Atul ji,
PAANCH DUSHMAN-1973 was a film made under the banner of M.G.O. Films, Bombay. It was produced by Manu Narang but Directed by Bimal Rawal. The music of R.D. Burman had lyrics from Majrooh. There were 6 songs,3 solos and 3 duets. Solos were by KK-2 and Rafi-1,Duets of Asha/KK-2 and Lata/KK-1.The other songs are better than the above song.
The cast was Lead pair of MANU NARANG and RAJEE,both were first timers.Manu Narang was the son of S.D.Narang, the famous Producer/Director, who himself was a dashing Hero in the 40s.Films like KHAZANCHI-1941 were big hits-not because of Narang, but because of superb Debut by SHAMSHAD Begum in Hindi films. She had sung ALL 9 song-Solos-in the Debut film and created a sort of record, unbroken till today.
Manu Narang was one time the famed Playboy of the 50s and 60s and was in the news for all wrong reasons. There are umpteen stories of him and his Rang reliayan…………
No one can predict why a Hindi film succeeds. This film PAANCH DUSHMAN had the essential ingredients of a successful Masala film. It had a good looking youthful new lead pair, one of the best Music Directors, Best singers, very good story line,5 Villains (Pran, Shatrughna, Manmohan, Vinod khanna and Prem Chopda),
6 comedians (Mehmood, Mukri, Mohan choti, Agha, Sunder and Bramhachary),2 Cabaret dancers (Aruna Irani and Helen) an eternal weeping Maa-Baap (Durga Khote and Nazir Hussain), but HARD LUCK! This murder mystery did not succeed…..
This period in Hindi films was of stories of Smugglers, desh ke Dushman etc. Accordingly, the storyline went like…
Sunil (Manu Narang) is accused of murdering his own brother Raju and a Prostitute. He and his lover Reeta (Rajee) learn that the real motive of the murder was Diamonds. So, to tap the real murderer, Sunil poses as a Dimond merchant cum a Prince. The 5 villains are lured who go after the best Diamonds that he has. Finally, with the help of his friends, lover and a helping Police Inspector (Jagdish Raj), the real culprit is captured.
Despite dances, drama and mystery, fight and little weeping by Hero’s crippled parents, the public showed its back to the film and very quickly, the film went in hiding.

In later years this movie was re-released in ‘1987’ with the title as ‘Daulat Ke Dushman. Though its music was created by none other than our beloved Pancham Da, this movie remained a not-so familiar movie for me.

“Paanch Dushman’ (alias ‘Daulat Ke Dushman) was directed by Bimal Rawal. It was produced by Manu Narang. It had Manu, Rajee, Aruna Irani, Sunder, Mukri, Mohan Choti, Durga Khote, Nassir Hussain, Sujata, Yograj, Jagdish Raj, Brahmachari, Agha, Helen, and Mehmood.
Story, screenplay, and dialogues of this movie were written by Dr Balkishan Mauj.

Editing of this movie was done by H.B. Pathare.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 24.01.1973. (This movie will turn ‘fifty’ next year 😊)

Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, and Asha Bhonsle, and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie had seven songs (six plus one added later) written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by R.D. Burman.

(Note: – The ‘Addenda’ of HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions that ‘this movie was later released in 1987 with the title ‘Paanch Dushman’ ‘alias’ ‘Daulat Ke Dushman’, with this additional song ‘Sonaa chaandi jhoothhi daulat, sachchi daulat pyaar … sung by Manna Dey.)

(*appears as first song in the movie in the background of titles)

In 2015 I got my first copy of HFGK i.e., HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) but I had never gone through other songs of this movie since then. Also, they were not available then. Now songs of this movie are uploaded by music lovers and we can now listen to all songs of this movie.

Recently while browsing through the blog, I noticed that only one song of this movie was posted in 2012. Soon this movie will be completing its ‘ten years’ run on the blog without adding the second song. So, I checked and found today’s song which is sung by Rafi Saab. This is the only song sung by him in this movie and that fits the bill for my series of ‘Pancham-Rafi Songs’ where I have discussed songs where Rafi Saab had sung only one song in the movie where music was composed by R.D. Burman.

When I listened to today’s song for this post and listened to its’ link with dialogues, I immediately identified the voice of Mehmood. So, yes! this is a song of Rafi Saab sung for Mehmood.

Let us now enjoy today’s song in Rafi Saab’s voice singing for Mehmood. The song is picturised on Mehmood and Aruna Irani.

Here is this entertaining song …

Hullo Atuldom

The last time I had written a post for Mother’s Day was in 2016 – Mere chehre mein chhupa hai meri maa ka chehra . In that post I had mentioned how the idea of mother’s day came about. This day has been celebrated in the USA since 1914 as per a proclamation by Woodrow Wilson declaring the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.

As far as Indians are concerned everyday is Mother’s Day. Only thing is in the last few decades, with the increase in number of youngsters staying away from their families for studies or work or whatever reason, Mother’s Day is another day that we have started aping the west. We find youngsters definitely calling their mothers to wish, and some even send her some gifts.

There are numerous messages that will flood the social media on Mother’s Day. But a Mother will normally wait only for her children’s messages i.e. if it is not possible for the children to be physically present with her. Then there will be some somber message that will say “learn to appreciate your mother, for some are not as blessed as you”. And still others will say “what does she ask for, only a smile or a message that you are fine”. In all these years of being active on social media, I have not come across any message whose wordings have remained in my memory. But what I have stated above is the general gist of messages that will be in our INBOX on this Sunday, it being the second Sunday of May 2021.

And we must salute the mothers of the modern era. The amount of juggling that they need to do so that the schedule of the family is not upset. And most mothers also are earning members of the family. Till atleast a generation before us, these women who were working to earn, so as to supplement the family income, were seen preparing all meals for the family before they themselves left for their work. And on returning home head straight to the kitchen to make dinner and also engage the children with their studies and attend to whatever other responsibilities that she was meant to do. Being a mother had become a though job, and any lady who was not an expert at that kind of juggling was looked down upon.

In my student days, I used to commute by the Mumbai local trains and I have seen ladies shelling PEAS, cleaning coriander etc in the train. There were (don’t know if this is still happening in the trains) enterprising hawkers who used to sell vegetables and fruits, procured from the markets on the local trains of Mumbai. And to be honest, it must have been helpful to the lady travelers as it may have saved them shopping time.

I also know of mothers who have given up on well paying jobs so that they can devote all their attention to the family and children. These ladies doubled up as private tutors so that they didn’t waste their free time and could still contribute monetarily to the family.

And let me not miss talking about a generation of mothers, who are currently in their 80s and beyond. These ladies may not have been as fortunate, as say even the current 50/60 – year old mothers, in terms of getting beyond class 10 in education. But these ladies too, have reared a generation of individuals and instilled values of humanity, taught their children the importance of education and being good citizens – gender no bar. My mother would not have felt proud of her children’s achievements if my grandmother had not encouraged her to study and complete her graduation in spite of being married and a mother to 4 growing up children.

If my mother had been there she would have wished my grandmother just as me and my siblings would have fussed over our mother and my children pamper me on mother’s day. This is the day I also thank the mother in my mother-in-law for being my go-to person whenever I am in trouble, upset or celebrating. I simply love to be around her and learn how she has lived 74 years of her life as a mother.

Mothers have a special place in Indian stories and as an extension of these stories in Indian cinema too. We have movies titled “Maa” (three in our blog itself), “Maa Beta”, “Maai Baap”, “Maa aur Mamta”, “Maa Baap” (two movies with this title in our blog) etc.

In addition we have the classic “Mother India” where the lady had a powerful place in the life of her family members. Saw this movie, recently, with a conscious mind. I was amazed at the strength of the character that Nargis played. This lady could plough her field along side her husband and sons. She wielded a lathi when her son went out-of-line and her teachings; as also on the mean-money minded- lala (moneylender) when he misbehaved with her. This mother-character was a lady made of steel and didn’t tolerate when her son went on to abduct a bride of the village and didn’t hesitate to shoot him in spite of him being her son.
I have seen and read interviews of actresses of the next generation and they all used to say that they want at least one role in there life like the one Nargis played in “Mother India” and realized only now the full meaning of the wish of all these later year actresses.

But that is another story, let us get to today’s song. It is from the 1970 release “Mastaana”. This movie was directed by A. Subba Rao, produced by Premji, had seven songs penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmi-Pyare. It had a cast headed by Mehmood- Padmini- Bharati- Vinod Khanna and had Shyama, Rehman, Mukri, Leela Mishra, Manorama, Jayshree T., Ramesh Deo, wonder- child (that is how it was in the movie’s titles) Bobby etc. It was an emotional movie showing the bond between a poor-honest man Satya (Mehmood) and Naintara (Baby Bobby) a child of rich parents who misses having her parents when she needs them the most. The movie is a must-see for all Mehmood fans as he was too good in the emotional scenes. This is one of the movies (the other being ‘Lakhon Mein Ek’) where he makes his audience shed a tear or two in addition to making us laugh.

This song is sung by the child Naintara as a stage song at her school’s Parents Day. The parents don’t have time to attend the programme and depute the child’s nanny (Manorama). The child, on her part, takes Satya along for the program and Satya on his part sits in the aisle. The playback for this song is by Lata Mangeshkar.
Salutation and Best wishes to all mothers. Awaiting Father’s Day (in about a month).

Editor’s note-With this song, Anand Bakshi silently completes 1100 songs in the blog as a lyricist. Only the third lyricist (after Rajinder Krishan and Majrooh Sultanpuri) to touch this mark in the blog.

Song-Maine maa ko dekha hai (Mastaana)(1970) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

maine maa ko dekha hai,
dekha hai maa ko dekha hai
maa ka pyaar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai,
maa ka pyaar nahin dekha
maine phool toh dekhe hain,
dekhe hain phool toh dekhe hain
phoolon ka haar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai,
maa ka pyaar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai

waise toh ghar mein maa ki tasveer hai ae ae
waise toh ghar mein maa ki tasveer hai
lekin meri kab aisi taqdeer hai
kabhi jo ghabraaoon,
gale se lag jaaoon
agar naa neend aaye
toh lori woh gaaye
mera mann jiska pyaasa hai
pyaasa hai jiska pyaasa hai
woh laad dulaar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai,
maa ka pyaar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai

waise meri maa ka dil toh sakht nahin ee ee
waise meri maa ka dil toh sakht nahin
par uske paas zara bhi waqt nahin
hai uska naam bada
hai usko kaam bada
woh devi mamta ki,
hai leader janta ki
maa ke photo ke bina,
bina ji photo ke bina
koi akhbaar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai,
maa ka pyaar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai

pyaari pyaari hai woh bholi aisi hai ae ae
pyaari pyaari hai woh bholi aisi hai
kal aaya se poochha baby kaisi hai
meri maa sachchi hai,
badi hi achchi hai
yeh uska dosh nahin
use kuchh hosh nahin
maa ne duniya dekhi hai,
dekhi hai duniya dekhi hai
ghar sansaar nahin dekha
maine maa ko dekha hai,
maa ka pyaar nahin dekha
maine phool toh dekhe hain
dekhe hain phool toh dekhe hain
phoolon ka haar nahin dekha,
maine maa ko dekha hai

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 135 # Asha Bhonsle-Kishore Kumar duets#
———————————————–

Today 29th April is ‘international dance day’!!!

If we go by the dictionary meaning of dance, it is ‘a series of steps and movements which you do to music’ and so the dancing is ‘the action of moving to music’.

Many of us like to dance but are too shy to break into a dance in public or even among friends (people like me). People like me will not dance if requested specifically but will dance without any insistence sometimes…. man mutaabiq ‘maahaul’ hona chaahiye bas, man aur sharir donon hi naachne lagte hain 😊

People may differ on what exactly ‘correct dance’ is. I think ‘dance’ is a state of mind. It is spontaneous when you like some music or want to express one’s joy sometimes. It may even be a process of swaying your body- sometimes to the accompaniment of humming or singing.

Classical dance or dance art form and traditional dance are ‘respected’ dance forms and are not part of this discussion today. That is a separate domain, and I am not an authority to speak on that.

Today I present this song, which according to me is a super dance number in its own way where Mehmood and Aruna Irani are performing on the song and also dancing.

I have mentioned it in my earlier posts that I like Mehmood’s dancing. Watching him dance often causes me to do a jig or two myself. 😊

Let us move to today’s movie now. The movie is ‘Man Mandir-1971’.

I associate this movie mainly with its song ‘jaadugar tere nainaa’. Other songs of this movie are also nice songs but they are lesser heard ones. Today’s song is one of them. I was not aware of this song till I checked for the remaining song from this movie ‘Man Mandir-1971’. I remember to have heard this song in the past but I had forgotten which movie it was from.

“Man Mandir-1971” was produced by Sudesh Kumar and directed by Chanakya for Vijayshree Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Waheeda Rehman, Sanjeev Kumar, Sudesh Kumar, David, Sunder, Randhir, Onkar, Jagadishraj, Aruna Irani, Manorama, Indumati, Kumudini Shanker, Helen, Ravikant, Mansaram, Mac Mohan, Paul Sharma, Parsuram, Som Haksar, Nayampally, Krishan Kumar, Farooq Jaipuri, Jagdish Sharma, Baby Kalpana, Master Chikoo, Mehmood etc in it.
The movie introduced Rakesh Roshan and Kanchan.

The movie had six songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the past.

Shamshad Begam sings for Mehmood 😊
——————————————

Today 23rd April’2021 is the eighth remembrance anniversary (14th April 1919 – 23rd April-2013) of yesteryears’ singer Shamshad Begam. One who Naushad always mentioned as ‘a perfect Hindustani voice’.

On this occasion here is a song from the 1971 movie ‘Johar Mehmood In Hong Kong’. I had watched this movie in my childhood with my Uncle and have mentioned it in my earlier post on the blog.

Few songs like ‘jalti hai duniya jalti rahe’, ‘aayo aayo nau-raatri tyohaar’ have always been in my memory since my childhood. Also, the today’s song is one special song which I have never forgotten because on screen it is performed by a ‘beautiful female artist’ (in disguise though 😊)
I often break up in humming this today’s song whenever I am in ‘ Mehmood – mood’ 😊.

It is surprising that today’s song has been missing from the ‘blog’ till now.

Let us have a brief about the movie, before we enjoy the today’s ‘entertaining song’ …

“Johar Mehmood in Hongkong” (1971) was produced by Madan Chopra and K.Z. Sheth. It was directed by S.A. Akbar and was presented by M.O. Bawazir for Mahesh Ashish. The movie had I.S. Johar, Mehmood, Sonia Sahni, Aruna Irani, Tiwari, Kamal Kapoor, Tuntun, Manorama, Madhumati, Haroon, and Pran. Agha, Mukri, Jr. Mehmood, Polson, Shaikh, B.B. Bhalla, Raj Kishore, Khairati, Murad appear as Guest Artistes in this movie.

This movie was written by I.S. Johar who also wrote the screenplay and dialogues for this movie. Vithal Bankar was the editor for this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 04.01.1971. And thus, this movie has already completed its FIFTY years since its release. I am sure many of us might have fond memories and nostalgia of watching this movie and might be remembering its songs too.

Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji who were assisted by Babla and where Parte was the arranger and Frank Fernand the Conductor.

There were Six songs in this movie penned by Qamar Jalalabadi (four songs) and two songs are jointly credited to Qamar Jalalabadi and Indeevar (as per HFGK).

Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Shamshad Begam, Manna Dey and Usha Timothi gave their voices to the songs in this movie. As per HFGK Lakshmi Shankar, Usha Khanna and Usha Mangeshkar’s voice has been in one song each, however their names are not mentioned in the titles of this movie (available on YT).

So far three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog.

Today’s song is the fourth song of this movie to appear on the blog.

The song is as a “diversion” song on Mehmood and another person (whom I am unable to identify) who gate crash on Jeewan’s wedding reception in Hindi filmy style without being subjected to any checks on their credentials. They are accompanied by two female dancers whom I cannot identify.

I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors seen in the picturisation.

Hullo Atuldom

Some songs keep playing in our mind as if on loop. This I had said in one of my previous posts. Today’s song is one such.
I saw it consciously a number of times in the last few years. Consciously means I may have seen it in the ’70s or ’80s when these movies were aired on the doordarshan but I was not old enough to appreciate them or the meaning of their lyrics. But now on repeat viewing of the movie I am getting wiser. I had filed away (mentally) that this needs to be on the blog. So here it is.

“Sadhu Aur Shaitaan” a 1968 release had 4 songs all written by Rajinder Krishan and Laxmi-Pyare were the music directors. Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Manna Dey and Mohd. Rafi were the playback singers.

Only one song has been posted on the blog. That one had Mehmood replaying his “hum kale hain toh kya hua” character. We had Mehmood mouthing the initial part of “Chunia, ari kidhar hai ri tu? Mere dil ki rani. Mere nawaason ki naani. aa gaya hoon main. arre dekh le main aa gaya permission leko”.

Today’s song has him giving gyaan about the importance of knowing one’s mother tongue in addition to learning “A B C D”. We should remember that this was a movie which came at a time when we had enough students opting for schools which were not essentially English medium. We should also remember that all those who trained in non-English medium schools were no less intelligent and we have many pioneers in various fields from those students too. I know I will be stirring a hornet’s nest if I talk about which is a better language for educating the masses of the country.

My personal feeling is that education should be in a language where in the parents also understand what the child is learning so that they are able to clarify doubts that the child has as he is studying. People may feel that my thoughts are very old fashioned but…..

Today happens to be the birth anniversary of Mehmood who would have been 88. He knew how to bring a smile on the viewer’s face, how to tickle their funny bone. He was the son of actor/dancer Mumtaz Ali and brother of dancer Minu Mumtaz (about whom our Sadanandji has written in his this post). His brother Anwar Ali was also an actor who paired with Mehmood in “Bombay To Goa” as Rajesh to Mehmood’s Khanna.

Mehmood took up odd jobs at a rather young age to help look after his large family which had 7 siblings. He decided to try acting to support his family once he married and had his first son and had his first break in “C.I.D” with a small role of the killer. He had other small unnoticed roles in “Do Bigha Zameen” “Pyaasa” etc. His innings in Bollywood was peppered with comic roles that were an essential part of the story and we often saw him drill sense into older characters towards the end of the movie.

I saw a part of “Meri bhabhi” (1969) this morning where he was doing just that as Shambu. But he was a class apart when he turned to movie making and gave us classics like “Bhoot Bungla”, “Padosan”, “Bombay To Goa” and the most poignant, message carrying of them all “Kunwara Baap”. His last movie released in 1996 “Dushman Duniya Ka” which he directed and Jeetendra headed the cast. It is interesting to note that Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan had special appearances in it.

Remembering the actor, producer, director Mehmood with this song sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle.

Mohammed Rafi: The incomparable (II) – Song No. 19

29/09/2020 – 88th birth anniversary of Mehmood
—————————————————————
Mehmood Ali (29 September 1932 – 23 July 2004), popularly known simply as Mehmood, was an Indian actor, writer, singer, director and producer best known for playing comic roles in Hindi films. Today we are celebrating his 88th birth anniversary. Only other person I can think of with so many talents is Kishore Kumar. Even that I am not sure if, Kishore Kumar ever wrote any film stories though he is credited as a song writer, I think.

A veteran of 300 films, he can be called India’s national comedian, some may differ. But to differ is everyone’s not so basic right. The premise for calling him the national comedian are many, one of them could be this fact that he has 25 filmfare nominations. That amounts to at least one nomination every year from 1954 onwards. It is not so straight forward. As per information given on Wikipedia, the award for Best performance in a comic role started only in 1967. So Mehmood was nominated for Best supporting actor 6 times between 1954 and 1966. Rest of the nineteen nominations could be in continuation up to 1985. By late 70’s Mehmood significance as a comedien or a need for a comedien in films had diminished. From late 70’s the comic character as well as a Vamp/dancer character were diminishing, as the heroes and heroine’s usurped them. For a while there, a thought struck that, if they could they would have done away with playback singers too, if they could. Than playback singers also would have been out of the work force as well with the defunct comic actor and dancer/vamp starlets. Fanciful thoughts these.

If the ‘Best performance in a comic role’ is initiated as late as 1967, many like Agha, Bhagwan and Johnny Walker missed out on them. In the 90’s we did see, some heroes nominated for “Best performance in a Negative role”, “ Best performance in a comic role” etc.

Back to Mehmood who started his career as a child artist, in “Qismat” 1943. He produced a number of films, story of some of them like ‘Ek baap chhe bête”,’Bhoot Bangla” “Safed ghoda kaala sawaar” & “ Janta Hawaldar”. So this was a talented and multi-faceted personalty. Many memorable character and comedy with a twist of tragedy roles assessed by Mehmood are too many to list. The youngest brother of ‘Beti-Bete”, the international faqeer in ‘Aankhen”, the kabaadiwala son in law in ‘Neel Kamal”, to the madrasi music teacher in “Padosan”, to the recalcitrant son to Om Prakash who has a passion for filmmaking in “Pyaar kiye jaa”, and the kaala, dilwala in “Gumnaam”. The difference from other comic actors and Mehmood is the versatility of his talents, and he was usually accompanied by a love interest in the films. There was a parallel story going on with these comic actors, side by side with the main story. Even in the not so run of the mill films, this was a regular thing. And songs to sing is a foregone conclusion, romantic or comic.

After a few lack luster recent post, I have made some special efforts here in this posts, to make some observations of my own. It may be the 50’s Rafi song, which brings this out of me. I had begun to feel jaded and incinerated, with so many 80’s and 90’s , even 70’s songs I have written the posts for recently.

It feels good to go back to the 50’s. The song in question is from “Mr. Qartoon MA”(1958). Rafi Sahab is singing here for both Mehmood and Johnny Walker. Johny Walker and Mehmood are disguised as sadhu’s and singing this song on the street, in front of their love interest’s hostel or house. The song is special for being a comic song, roadside tamasha song, sadhu’s song, disguise song etc etc. The music director for this film O. P. Nayyar and surprisingly lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri, on his rare picnic outside the Shankar-Jaikshan. Not that anyone is complaining, if it gives us songs like ‘Tere Ghar Ke saamne” when Hasrat Jaipuri ventured out of the foursome fold.

I have had the fortune of posting a few O. P. Nayyar songs in the distant past, but before this post cannot recall any songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri, for which I have written a post. Also the posts for Shankar-Jaikishan songs, are rare ones for me.

The audio and film version are slightly different in this song. Audio is shorter than the film version and a line in the mukhda which is repeated is changed as “ab hari om”.

These four songs from this film are already posted in the blog:

Chanda chaley jhoom ke baadarwa ko choom ke
Dil tera deewaana o mastaani bulbul
Main main main main cartoon Multiple part song
Mera dil ghabraaye meri aankh sharmaaye

This is song no. 19 in series of Mohammed Rafi: The incomparable (II), also a tribute for Mehmood. I don’t want to repeat my earlier requests for having a separate category tag for ‘Mehmood” song. I see that there is one such tag for Johny walker song. The is a need for ‘Agha song” also for that matter. Many all-time classic songs are sung onscreen by these comic actors.

Blog Day :

Remembrance day of Mukri :

Mukri also spelled as Muqri was an Indian film actor, who worked as a comedian in Hindi films. Born as Muhammad Umar Mukri in Alibagh, in Kokani Muslim Family, he started his film career with the film Pratima along with noted film actor Dilip Kumar in 1945. Born of 5th January 1922, he left for heavenly abode on 4th September’2000 at the age of 72 years.

Mukri was seen in many films in character roles and comic role. One movie which comes to mind in ‘Ram aur Shyam”. Here also he featured with Dilip Kumar as his friend.

Today is the 20th death anniversary, so as a tribute, I have found a wonderful comic song picturized on Mukri and Mehmood. The film is ‘Madhavi’(1969), with Laxmikant –Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi as music director and lyricist. The movie had very good songs, I hear. This is the only Rafi song picturized on Mukri which remained to be posted, going by the information is Rafi sahab’s excel sheet. I expect, Mukri may not be as prolific as Mehmood, Johhny Walker or Agha. So there are most likely fewer songs where he actually sings. In this song Manna De is giving playback for Mehmood and Rafi Sahab is singing for Mukri. Now, in the absence of song video, how can I be certain of this ? I have searched on youtube, though the movie “Madhavi” is available, video of only one song is there. All other songs, only audio is available, including the song being posted. Actually, on closer inspection, there are voices of both Mehmood and Mukri are there is the song along with the singers. This is a comic song in real terms, maybe a rip-off on “Padosan” songs.

It was my husband who confirmed the playback for Mehmood and Mukri. As I was noting the lyrics this evening, he asked from where I had found this song from ‘Madhavi”. This is not a known song for me, but may husband knows the songs of this film very well.

The name did ring a bell that I had contributed the lyrics of Lata solo of the two songs posted :

parda hata de mukhda dikha de
saanjh sawere adharon pe mere

My husband also helpfully given the story outline of this costume drama film of Kings, Princes and Princesses. Sanjay Khan is a prince and Deepa, in title role of Madhavi, is a princess. Mehmood and Mukri are all part of the Sanjay Khan’s entourage. This songs is performed on stage. Pran is the Senapati of Sanjay Khan, and he has this dialogue as his ‘takiya kalaam” :

“Shaadi karungaa to sirf madhavi se, warna maut se !”
