Ae baad e sabaa aahistaa chal yahaan soyi huyi hai Anaarkali

“Anarkali” (1953) was one of the all time great musical blockbusters. Its songs have gone on to become iconic songs. C Ramchandra was the music director of this movie and Rajinder Krishan had written the lyrics.
But Hemant Kumar is also credited as the music director of this song. Why is this so ? Here is the lowdown.
Five songs of “Anarkali” had alreday been recorded by C Ramchandra and just the tiitle song remained to be recorded when C Ramchandra had a disagreement with “Filmistan” studio, the makers of “Anarkali”. C Ramchandra left the movie in a huff. “Filmistan” studio then approached Hemant Kumar to create the title song.
Hemant Kumar asked Ravi, his assistant to create the title song. Ravi composed the music of this song. In the meanwhile C Ramchandra’s disagreement with “Filmistan” got resolved. C Ramchandra came back to complete the unfinished work. When C Ramchandra found out that Ravi had already composed the music for the title song, he listened to this song and okayed it.
That song was sung by Hemant Kumar and it was “Ae baad e sabaa ahistaa chal, yahaan soyi huyi khai Anaarkali”.
So the fact is, the music for this movie was created neither by C Ramchandra nor Hemant Kumar, but by Ravi. And this was before he had become an independent music director.
