Panchhi banoon udti phiroon mast gagan mein

on:When I listen to this song, I feel enthralled, almost without fail. What a feel good song this one is !
The lyrics, the singing, the music, everything in this song is just perfect. The song makes one feel like one is in the midst of nature, far from the maddening crowds and breathing fresh air, forgetting all the woes of one’s life.
This song is from “Chori Chori” (1956). This song is sung by Lata and picturised on a young and pretty Nargis. Hasrat Jaipuri wrote the song and the music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

ho chaand sooraj sitaaron se kheloon
ho apni baahon mein aakaash le loon
badhti chaloon gaati chaloon apni lagan mein
badhti chaloon gaati chaloon apni lagan mein

Translation
I want to be a bird and fly merrlily in the sky
today I feel like I am free in the sky of this world
dawn has taken place in my life
the darkness of sorrow has gone away
crops are in full bloom in the fields
there is no restrictions on the feeling of the heart
today I feel like a free bird in the sky of this world
My heart wants to play in this bloom
I want to frolic in the waters of the rivers
I want to play with thr moon, sun and the stars
I want to embrace the sky in my arms
I want to keep moving ahead and keep singing on my own
today I am free in the sky of this world
I want to be a bird and fly merrlily in the sky
today I feel like I am free in the sky of this world
I would like to cover myself with the dress made of the clouds
I want to wear the “paayal” made of thunder
I want to snatch the “kaajal” of the black clouds
my life is active like the flow of riverwater in spate
my heart is aflutter with enthusiasm in this cool breeze
I want to be a bird and fly merrlily in the sky
today I feel like I am free in the sky of this world

Do you know what the song means in English?
If not, could you please let me know of someone who can translate this into English?
Thanks.

One of my favorite songs… ( down memory lane … )
I must have watched this movie in 1976-77 (in our colony club’s weekly screening of movies).
I like its two songs very much- ‘panchhi banoon’ and ‘rasik balma dil kyon lagaya’ , of course, other songs are also good.
Nice post Atul ji, and I too feel the same when I listen this song.
Thanks for the translation too.
the earlier link is not working, adding here a working link which is in color (I am not aware when the color version of this movie was released, or only few songs have been colorised, but this is a real treat to watch )

I think this song was also used in a South Indian movie. The latter became the highlight of my school dance career (it was all downhill after that) as I was chosen to dance the female lead in a “Spring Dance” that was beautifully choreographed by a South Indian teacher: she also made the piano teacher play it, and roped in several teacher with good voices to sing it!! In fact, we then danced it around different schools, and it was always a hit.
And I still remember the main instruction from the teacher, “Smile, smile, smile!!” So thats what I still do when I listen to this song:))

Someone who is familiar with the South Indian song will have to provide the link for that.
