Meri muhabbat teri jawaani…aa meri raani lejaa chhallaa nishaani

In bollywood, we have “teasing” songs where hero is seen teasing the heroine rather roughly against her wishes and getting away with it. In real life India, such a conduct is considered highly objectionable and rightly so, since it is clearly sexual harassment. In fact, a uniquely Indian term called “eve teasing” has come into existence in India, much to the amusement of non Indian observers. And such “eve teasing” is punishable under Indian Penal Code, articles 298 (A) and (B).

Though Bollywood movies talk a lot about article 302 of IPC (murder), and older movies had some person wrongly prosecuted under this article, I wonder why no Bollywood hero was ever prosecuted under section 298 of IPC. For evidence against the hero, one could show the “eve teasing” song that the hero was so blatantly shown singing in movies.

How I would love to see Rajendra Kumar, of all the eve teasing heroes, to be hauled up for “eve teasing”. I have seen him indulging in such conduct in many songs. Here is one such song from “Anjaana” (1969). The song is sung by Rafi, lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music direction is by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The eve teasing by Rajendra Kumar is quite rough in nature.Babita rightly takes exception against that for much of the song. And I believe that expecting the girl to enjoy such obnoxious conduct is wrong.

And therefore I am not really unhappy to know that Rajendra Kumar ( the notorious eve teaser in my books) was soon shown the door by the public. Even the great music of the movie, which used to bail him out in his earlier movies, could not help him this time.

Give me Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz any day, where the teasing is gentle and both seem to enjoy it along with the audience.

This song itself is wonderful and one can enjoy it without needing to watch the picturisation. Rafi, Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyarelal have come up with a wonderful song here.

Song-Meri muhabbat teri jawaani … aa meri raani lejaa chhalla nishaani(Anjaana) (1969) Singer-Rafi , Lyrics-Anand Bakshi , MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

meri muhabbat teri jawaani
chaar dinon ki hai zindagaani
to, aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani
aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani
main hoon deewaanaa haa tu hai deewaani
ho ye saari duniyaa hai aani-jaani
to, aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani
aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani

aaj nahin to kal tu mere pyaar ko maanegi
qadar meri tu jaanegi ho preetam ko pahchaanegi
aaj nahin to kal tu mere pyaar ko maanegi
qadar meri tu jaanegi ho preetam ko pahchaanegi
barsegaa chham-chham, aankhon se paani
ye saari duniyaa hai aani-jaani
to, aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani
aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani

pyaar mein aksar premi pahle jhagdaa karte hain
magar phir aahen bharte hain, ik dooje pe marte hain
pyaar mein aksar premi pahle jhagdaa karte hain
magar phir aahen bharte hain, ik dooje pe marte hain
teri meri bhi yahi kahaani
ye saari duniyaa hai aani-jaani
to, aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani
aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani

maar na aise thokar teraa pair phisal jaaye
hai kitni naazuk tu haay!, sambhal oye, moch naa aa jaaye
maar na aise thokar teraa pair phisal jaaye
hai kitni naazuk tu haay!, sambhal oye, moch naa aa jaaye
gussaa buraa hai, samjhi deewaani
ye saari duniyaa hai aani-jaani
to, aa meri chhallo le jaa chhallaa nishaani
aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani

meri muhabbat teri jawaani
chaar dinon ki hai zindgaani
to, aa meri raani le jaa chhallaa nishaani
aa meri le jaa chhallaa nishaani

If I am not mistaken, “Anjaana” was a huge hit. It had many hit songs and was yet another jubilee hit for Jubilee Kumar.

So the songs bailed out Rajendra Kumar yet again in this movie too ?

🙂
Indeed.
Rajendra Kumar and Joy Mukherjee movies were virtually carried by Rafi saab’s songs.

Yes, I think that Rafi helped them earn much of their livelihood.

Rafi sahab was the only reason why heroes like Rajendra Kumar, Biswajeet, Joy Mukherjee et. al could be accepted by the Indian movie going public. These heroes hammed their way through the roles and had no screen presence as such. Only the great music directors like Shankar Jaikishan, O P Nayyar, Lakshmikant Pyarelal – and in the case of Biswajeet Hemant Kumar – and the voice of the one and only Rafi sahab carried them through.

I wonder what they could have done without these great music directors and Rafi sahab.

Indeed I whole heartedly agree with you about the contributions of Rafi and the music directors in shoring up the careers of many top actors of those days.

Quality music saw through many a mediocre movies in those days. The fact that the said gentlemen survived for such a long period as they did, testfies the power music wielded in safeguarding box office returns.

Rajendra Kumar’s acting prowess was almost non-existent., not to say monotonous whatever there was of it.
Bisawajeet was the ultimate Shammi clone (or should I say clown).
Similarly, Joy Mukherjee had a quite limited repertoire of moves & sequences which naturally became trite after repeated use.

The common denominator, however, was the great Mohammad Rafi and some very talented, genius music composers who were still carrying the flag from the golden decade of the 50s. These artists somehow contrived to delay the onset of the fall of the most cherished era of Hindi film music. This fall from grace has been so dramatic that now the average folk is happy to be fed drivel like Sheila and Munni in the name of music. Back in the days all four aspects of a song, viz. voice, singing, lyrics and composition were carefully and meticulously laid out, with much time and effort invested. The results, unsurprisingly, were such that now half a century later countless people are still yearning and craving for a dose of that potion, as evident by the huge popularity of blogs and forums on the web devoted to the majestic music of that era. Has someone seen anyone dying to dig up a song from, say five or ten years back? All forgotten and consigned to the dusty annals of history!
We are indeed lucky to have experienced the most enduring, evergreen, magical era of Hindi film music.
