While listeneing to the songs of old movies, we often praise the singer and/ or the music director, but many of us tend to underestimate the contribution of the lyricist. However great a tune, or however wonderful a voice may be, unless the singer gets a good well written song, it is not very likely that the song is going to catch the imagination of the public.
In olden days, the music directors knew the importance of lyrics only too well, and they ensured that they worked wit high quality lyricists.
Take this song for example. Lata sounds awesome in this song, and the music is wonderful. This is a timeless song. This song has become memorable thanks to the words of the lyrics which are like a work of art. The listeners in fact hang on to every word that comes out the singer’s lips. Lady (Nimmi) is waiting and waiting for her beloved to come, but all in vain, and her sadness and frusration finds expression in the form of this song. And how wonderfully Hasrat Jaipuri, the lyricist expresses her feelings in the form of this song.

Song-Kaahe ko der lagaayi re (Daag) (1952) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
maut aa gayi na aayenge marne ke baad bhi
aankhen tadapti rah gayin iss intzaar mein
kaahe ko der lagaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
hamne to jaan ganwaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
kaahe ko der lagaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
meri duaa naakaam huyi sooraj doobaa shaam huyi
pahne qafan jaayegi muhabbat dil ki lagi badnaam huyi
hansti hai saari Khudaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
kaahe ko der lagaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
raunaqen duniyaa ki yoon hi royegi aayengi khushiyaan gham bhi sahegi
lekin meri barbaad jawaani mit ke bhi unse yahi kahegi
hamse to ki bewafaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
kaahe ko der lagaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
rang ye laayi chaahat kisi ki yaad rahegi ulfat kisi ki
meri qasam tujhe
meri qasam tujhe maut thahar jaa dekh to loon main soorat kisi ki
hamne to preet nibhaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
kaahe ko der lagaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa
hamne to jaan ganwaayi re aaye na ab tak baalmaa

I have always loved this song and its lyrics. You have just said what I have been saying for some time now – without lyrics, there is nothing to make a song memorable. Unfortunately, there haven’t been too many songs like that these days.

Hi,
I think you are doing a great job. Your list is one of the most comprehensive that I have seen to date. I am also doing something similar. I am also trying to add some english translations for people who have a hard time understanding hindi/urdu. Keep up the great work!
