Yaar hamaari baat suno aisa ek insaan chuno

Posted on: July 14, 2010

“Roti” (1974) was a lovely Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz movie. It had a good and different story line and it was a nice movie to watch.

Needless to say, the movie, like all Rajesh Khanna movies, had superb songs in it. I have posted a few songs (read three) from this movie already. More songs from this movie need to be posted certainly.

Here is the song “yaar hamari baat suno aisa ik insaan chuno” from this movie. It is a song with a message. In this song, some people try to punish a woman of “loose” morals by stoning her. Rajesh Khanna tries to protect her and sings this song which has a very Biblical message in it, as Greta (Memsaab) tells it. Raja has very kindly provided a translation for this song so that even those unfamilar with Hindi may be able to understand the message being conveyed in the song.

The song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music.

Here is this nice song from “Roti” (1974).

PS-Any idea who is the woman whom the villagers attempt to stone in this song ?

Song-Yaar hamari baat suno (Roti) (1974) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

yaar hamaari baat suno
aisa ek insaan chuno
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
yaar hamaari baat suno
aisa ek insaan chuno
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho

koi hai chaalaak aadmi
koi seedha saadha
koi hai chaalaak aadmi
koi seedha saadha
hammen mein har ek hai paapi
thoda koi zyaada
ho koi maan gaya re koi rooth gaya ho
koi pakda gaya koi chhoot gaya
yaar hamaari baat suno
aisa ek beimaan chuno
ho jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho

is paapan ko aaj sazaa denge milkar ham saare
is paapan ko aaj sazaa denge milkar ham saare
lekin jo paapi na ho wo pehla patthar maare
ho pehle apna man saaf karo re
phir auron ka insaaf karo
yaar hamaari baat suno
aisa ek naadaan chuno
ho jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
yaar hamaari baat suno
aisa ek insaan chuno
ho jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho
jisne paap naa kiyaa ho
jo paapi naa ho

Friends, listen to me
Just pick a person
Who has never committed sin
Who is not a sinner

A person may be a smart man
Or he may be a simple man
But everybody has a sinner within himself
To a lesser or greater extent
Somebody here agrees with me, somebody disagrees
Somebody gets caught with sin, somebody gets away

Friends, just listen to me
Just pick a dishonest man
Who has never committed sin
Who is not a sinner

Today all of us will collectively punish this sinner
But only he who has not committed sin shall cast the first stone
First cleanse your own mind
Then try to mete out justice to others

Friends, just listen to me
Just pick an innocent
Who has never committed sin
Who is not a sinner

that lady being stoned was some XYZ who just happened to look like Nirupa Roy

I thought she is Praveen Paul (her name is there in the credits of this movie) but I am told that it is someone else.

Praveen would have been much older when this was made…Nirupa Roy is in it too though LOL! She would have had a minor credit if any, because this was the only place she appeared in the film.

It is biblical (to me) because there is a story in the Bible that Jesus came across a bunch of men about to stone a woman accused of being a prostitute and he said the same thing Rajesh says here: “Let the one among you who is without sin cast the first stone.”

You mean to say that it is Nirupa Roy ?

No no, it’s not Nirupa either. I would bet she isn’t even in the credits—this is the only scene the girl is in as I recall.

It is unfortunate that an actor figuring in a song should go uncredited.

Anand Bakshi created a nice song from bible story … nice to know.

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”

Nice movie. Still remember Rajesh khanna & Mumtaz scene

RK –> Tu ladki hoke beedhi peeti hai, sharam nahi aati
M –> Tu mard hoke beedi nahi peeta, tere ko sharam nahi aati

@ Memsaab “No no, it’s not Nirupa either. I would bet she isn’t even in the credits—this is the only scene the girl is in as I recall.”

But Memsaab, I think she’s Jeevan’s daughter who was lost in the fair? She has a largish role and features in the other popular song from the film “Naach meri bulbul toh paisa mile ga” with RK. Going by IMDB, she could be Madhu (very helpfully they haven’t provided a last name)?

Atul–thanks once again for this lovely blog. I’ve been lurking alright, just not commenting 🙂 As others have said before, your commentary on each of the songs always brings on a smile, more often a guffaw 🙂

If one clicks on the link to Madhu in imdb page on Roti, it leads to a male actor , that too a male actor who is a Major Malayalam actor. Of course, imdb etc. are not very accurate in these matters.

Suhan you are right—-I’d forgotten about that part of the plot (there is SO MUCH plot!) but I just pulled out my dvd and the credits don’t list anyone who might be her (if Madhu is the Malayalam actor and imdb is correct). The imdb credits are complete (or as complete as the film’s credits)…but unless there are two Praveen Pauls she isn’t Praveen either. I would bet imdb is not correct and she’s an actress named Madhu.

I too think that the lady’s name must be Madhu and imdb have got their Madhu confused. imdb is not the only such site. There are many such sites which let softwares do their work and as a result we have such faux pas. I do not think that the Malayalam actor called Madhu may have ever acted in any Bollywood movies. I think we should search the Hindi movies which this Madhu, and we may well get the confirmation that it is the same lady Madhu in all these Hindi movies.

(Ironically Praveen Paul plays Jeevan’s wife—this girl’s mother!) 😀
