Aanki chali baanki chali

on:This article is written by Pamir Harvey, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
With this song Namkeen (1982) makes its debut on this blog. Namkeen is the story of an old woman and her three daughters, as Gulzar says, in their incomplete family (adhooraa saa parivaar). The elder daughter, Nimki (Sharmila Tagore) has passed the age of marriage (Gulzar’s words, not mine), the middle one Mitthu (Shabana Azmi) is speech-impaired and the youngest is Chinki (Kiran Vairale), who is very cheeky. In this family arrives as a paying guest the truck driver Gherulal.
The three sisters are shown pounding grain in the song and going about their work and singing this song with partly nonsense words. Gulzar additionally puts in the words pantaa bhate tattkaa baigun poraa, which geographically doesn’t make sense, since they are Bangla words of a brinjal dish. I have been told that it means “fresh eggplant roast in wet rice”.
I think the issh issh noise is not a human voice but from an instrument or something else, but since one can see the actresses moving lips to it, I’ve included it in the lyrics. Enjoy!

Hi. Though I’m not a regular at this blog, I do use it as a resource tool from time to time when I want to know more about a particular song or movie.
Came looking to find the significance of the Bengali words in the lyrics, but the post doesn’t have much to go on. Any updates available? Thanks in advance.
