Jaayen to jaayen kahaan

Posted on: July 28, 2010

I was under the impression that I had posted this song long back, but as is usual with me, I was wrong. I was reminded through farmaishes for this song that I needed to post this song.

This song “jaayen to jaayen kahaan” from “Taxi Driver” (1954) was the most popular song of the year 1954. 1954 was the inaugural year for the popular Binaca geetmala radio programme and this song was the number one song in the Binaca geetmala final programme broadcast on 29 december 1954.

This song has two versions. The male version which is sung by Talat Mehmood and picturised on Dev Anand became more popular. This song has a female version too, which is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Kalpana Kartik and Dev Anand. Both versions are superb, and the poignancy of the situation comes out so wonderfully well , especially in the picturisation of the female version of the song. The pains felt by the protagonists can be felt even by the watchers watching this song.

This song is written by Sahir Ludhianvi andits music is composed by S D Burman. This song is a gem and the continued popularity of this song demonstrates the fact that quality is forever, irrespective of passage of time.

So here is this timeless classic from “Taxi Driver” (1954) in both the versions of the song. Farmaish for this song was given by Sid and Peevsie’s mom.

Lyrics

Lata version

jaayen to jaayen kahaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan

o jaane waale,
daaman chhudaa ke
mushqil hai jeenaa,
tujhko bhulaa ke
o jaane waale,
o jaane waale,
daaman chhudaa ke
mushqil hai jeenaa,
tujhko bhulaa ke
isase to hai, maut aasaan,
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan

aaaa aaaa

seene mein shole,
saanson mein aahen
is zindagi se, kaise nibaahen
seene mein shole
seene mein shole,
saanson mein aahen
is zindagi se, kaise nibaahen
har jazbaat hai veeraan,
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan

Talat Mehmood version

jaayen to jaayen kahaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan

maayusiyon kaa,
majmaa hai jee mein
kyaa rah gayaa hai,
is zindagi mein
maayusiyon kaa,
maayusiyon kaa,
majmaa hai jee mein
kyaa rah gayaa hai,
is zindagi mein
rooh mein hai gham
dil mein dhuaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan

unka bhi gham hai,
apnaa bhi gham hai,
ab dil ke bachne ki,
ummeed kam hai
unka bhi gham hai,
unka bhi gham hai,
apnaa bhi gham hai,
ab dil ke bachne ki,
ummeed kam hai
ek kashti, sau toofaan,
jaayen to jaayen kahaan
samjhegaa kaun yahaan,
dard bhare dil ki zubaan
jaayen to jaayen kahaan

This song is too beautiful and too sad for me to listen to it tonight. I started listening and was reminded of my uncle who passed away recently. He bore a striking resemblance to Dev Anand, and since he was only ten years older than me, I still remember seeing him in his college years, standing before the mirror and combing his hair to get the famous puff effect a la Dev Anand. In fact, it was he who got me started on these songs, by singing them, and telling me about Dev Anand, so I am going to listen to this tomorrow, during the day.

hullo Lalitha
sorry to hear of your Uncle. My he rest in peace.

its a wonder how the same songs give different memories to different people. my dad was the one who used to sing this song for me as a kid (and he was a Talat Mehmood fan as also a Dilip Kumar fan). and he was the one who pointed out to me about the similarity in hair style of Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar and how the 2 of them used to try and copy Gregory Peck of Hollywood and it seems Dev Anand adopted this particular style to impress Suraiya who was a Gregory Peck fan. and i got all this info thanks to my dad

This song is inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s song. Original Bengali song–“He Khoniker Otithi”..
