Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Sun lo dil ka afsaanaa

Posted on: October 12, 2010

In Hindi movies, songs were traditionally recorded twice- once for the picturisation and once for the audio (for the record company). The audio records were typically released prior to the release of the movie.

Most of the songs discussed here are those that are from movies which were released and the songs being discussed were in it. But there are some rare occasions when the song was excluded from the movie for some reason. As a result, these songs are now available only in audio form.

There are many gems that were excluded from movies for one reason or the other. In the past, I have discussed two Asha Bhonsle songs from “Kashmir Ki Kali” and “Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye” that were omitted from the movie. In the first case, it was the censors who forced it and in the later case, Asha Bhonsle’s rift with her erstwhile mentor O P Nayyar caused the omission of the song from the movie.

I have also discussed a Mukesh song from “Andaaz” (1949) that was excluded from the movie.

It turns out that “Andaaz” (1949) had more than one song that were excluded from the movie. One cannot blame the movie maker much. The movie had so many songs in it that inclusion of more songs would have been an overkill seeing that the movie needed some breathing space for dialogues too. 😀

Here is this duet sung by Lata and Rafi that was recorded for “Andaaz” (1949) but this song ended up being excluded from the movie. Excluded or not, this song was quite a popular song in Radio Ceylon.

Here is this song which is sung by Lata and Rafi and which was surely picturised on Nargis and Dilip Kumar (in case this song was picturised).Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and Naushad composed the music.

song-Sun lo dil ka afsaanaa (Andaaz) (1949) Rafi,Lata,Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri,MD-Naushad

Lyrics

sun lo dil ka afsaanaa ho
duniya dil ki basaake na bhool jaanaa
sun lo dil ka afsaanaa ho
duniya dil ki basaake na bhool jaanaa

dil hai tera deewaanaaa ho
apna hamko banaake na bhool jaanaa
dil hai tera deewaanaaa ho
apna hamko banaake na bhool jaanaa
dil hai tera deewaanaaa ho
apna hamko banaake na bhool jaanaa

saaz uthaaya hai ulfat ne
jhoom rahi hai jawaani
saaz uthaaya hai ulfat ne
jhoom rahi hai jawaani
jaise saari duniyaa hai do dil ki ek kahaani
jaise saari duniyaa hai do dil ki ek kahaani
do dil ki ek kahaani
ham tum gaayen ye gaanaa ho
hamse nainaa milaake na bhool jaanaa
dil hai tera deewaanaaa ho
apna hamko banaake na bhool jaanaa

baadal ke sang chandaa dole
baadal ke sang chandaa dole
tere sang man meraa
tere sang man meraa
pyaar se duniyaa jagmag saari
pyaar se duniyaa jagmag saari
pyaar nahin to andhera
pyaar nahin to andhera
main hoon tera parwaanaa ho
dekho aag lagaa ke na bhool jaanaa
sun lo dil ka afsaanaa ho
duniya dil ki basaake na bhool jaanaa

there’re lots of beautiful songs that were excluded from the movie– my favourites are geeta dutt’s “jaataa kahaan hai diwaane” (CID) and asha’s “main jab bhi akeli hoti hoon” (dharmaputra).

apparently the geeta dutt classic, “waqt ne kiya kyaa haseen sitam” (kaagaz ke phool) wasn’t supposed to be in the movie. but both the song and the cinematography of the scene are absolutely brilliant!

I remember seeing ‘main jab bhi akeli hoti hoon’ picturised on Mala Sinha in Dharamputra. At least my VCD version has it.

The song may not have Mala Sinha lip syncing to it, but rather a gramophone playing it.

If you search for
‘main jab bhi akeli hoti hun .asha bhosale-sahir ludhianvi-n.dutta’
on you tube you will find it.

It is not Lata, surely, but very difficult to find out. But important thing is that, the picturisation must be on Nargis & Raj Kapoor & not Dilip Kumar. For, firstly, it is Rafi and in this film Only Rafi sang for him. Secondly, Nargis was in love with Raj Kapoor only.
