S D Burman, a highly influential music director during the golden era of Hindi movie music was around for nearly the entire duration of the golden era. Born on 1 october 1906, S D Burman began his career as a Hindi movie music director in 1946 and he continued to enthrall music lovers with his compositions till 1975. He breathed his last on 31st october 1975. So today is his death anniversary.
On this occasion, we will pay our tribute to the legendray composer by discussing a few S D Burman songs.
Here is a rare song from “Buzdil” (1951). This song is a rare song on several counts.
This song is sung by Lata and it is written by Shailendra. The lyrics are based on folk tradition, whereas the music is semi classical. The song is picturised as a stage song/get together song, where Nimmi is shown singing this song with a mild smile (a rarest of rare occasions when she was observed smiling in Hindi movies), while Cuckoo performs a dance on this song. Now, Cuckoo, a fore runner of Helen, was known for “western” kinds of dances and seeing her perform a kathak is just as rare as Helen performing a semi classical dance. And Cuckoo does a competent job of this performance.
The performance is being watched by a full house, and that included Kishore Sahu and Premnath and a lady who could be Sunalini Devi, though her identity needs to be confirmed/ refuted by our knowledgeable readers.
And this is a song where the word “jhan” hits a century. 🙂
Yes, here is this rare and special song as a tribute to S D Burman.
The lyrics and other details of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath.

jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan
jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan
jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan
jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje,
jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje,
kaise jaaun pi se,milan ko
kaise jaaun pi se milan ko
laaj ke maare maroonkaun jatan karoon,
rama, jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje
kaise jaaun,
kaise jaaun,
kaise jaaun pi se milan ko
laaj ke maare maroon kaun jatan karoon
rama, jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal
paar jigar ke,
baan birah kaa,
kaajar kaari rain
ut kajraare badraa barse,
it barse morey nain
paanwo mein bedee laaj ki,
tadap tadap reh jaaun
na duniyaa ki reet nibhaun,
ya main preet nibhaun
ramaa jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje
kaise jaaun pi se milan ko
laaj ke maare maru kaun jatan karoon
rama, jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal
jhan jhan jhan jhan
paayal baaje
jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan
jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal
jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje
jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje
baaje baaje,
jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal
gham se bharaa dil,
bojha bhaari,
hamse chalaa naa jaaye
kadam kadam mori chunri ulajhe
aur kaanta lag jaaye
aanchal mein ek deep chhupaaye
nikli jogan ghar se piyaa ki
nikli jogan ghar se
aaya pawan jhakoraa
deepak thar thar kaanpe dar se
nikli jogan ghar se piyaa ki
nikli jogan ghar se
aanchal mein ek deep chhupaaye
jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan
rama, jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje
jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal baaje
kaise jaaun pi se milan ko
laaj ke maare maroon kaun jatan karoon
rama, jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal
paayal baaje jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal,
baaaaje
jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan jhan
jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal
baaaaje,
baaaaje,
baaaaje
jhan jhan jhan jhan paayal

Is there a faster version of this song also? I feel like I have heard a different version also of this same song, with some slight differences, but the second half sounds the same. It is a beautiful song and now that I have seen the video, the filming is also very nice, with the dance and Nimmi having a Mona Lisa-like smile on her lips. Congratulations on the 1000th jhan!

This is a vintage song by Faiyaz Khan, than Sachin da made Bengla song…”jhan jhan jhan manjira baze…” which he sings…
than he made this song for Lata and used in a film.
I have heard all these three songs…this is a classical song.
If time permits please listen to Faiyaz Khan, it’s mind blowing rendition by him.
A search will take you there.
