Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O jaane waale aajaa tadpaane waale aajaa

Posted on: November 13, 2011

Movies called “Taqdeer” have been produced from time to time. I have discussed three songs from “Taqdeer”(1967). Now I find that movies of these titles were produced in 1958 as well as in 1943.

“Taqdeer” (1943) is directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie had actors like Chandramohan, Motilal, Nargis,Noor Mohammad Charlie, Jillo, Kayam Ali, Ansari,Laddan etc. The movie is far too old for most people and little authentic information is available about this movie. Not all the information available about this movie is correct. It is so jarring to note that the same inaccurate information is faithfully reproduced by all internet sources without checking up the veracity of the information.

There are cases when there is no way to cross check the accuracy of information. But on other cases, viz identity of singers, especially when the singers are well known ones, should not be a problem. But I find that songs are often attributed to a singer whose voice does not at all resemble the voice of the songer in the song.

Take this duet from “Taqdeer”(1943) for instance. all sources that I have come across mention this as a duet sung by Shamshad Begam and Motilal. Now Shamshad Begam is an extremely well known singer with quite a distinct voice which remained almost unchanged throughout her four decades long singing career. The female voice in the song cannot be Shamshad Begam’s. I do not know if the record label itself identifies it as Shamshad Begam’s voice, but if it is so then it has to be a clerical mistake. The voice cannot be Shamshad Begam’s. To me it sounds like Amirbai Karnataki’s voice, or at least a voice of a singer resembling Amirbai Karnataki. So going against what all other internet sources mention, I maintain that the female voice of this song is not Shamshad Begam’s. I request knowledgeable readers to confirm/refute/ give futher information on this matter.

The song is picturised on an extremely young Nargis and a balding middle aged Motilal. Those were the days when pairing much older men with very young wome was common, not only in movies but also in real lives where middle aged men marrying girls half their age was quite common.

This song is so old that information about its lyicist and music director is not easy to come by. I have found that Mahrul Qadri is the lyricist and Rafiq Ghaznavi is the music director. Rafiq Ghaznavi is the grandfather of Salma Agha who sang songs in Hindi movies in 1980s.

The style of singing in the female voice is very similar to Amirbai’s, but the voice appears thinner (higher frequency).

Thanks for confirming that the voice does not belong to Shamshad Begam. The voice could be either of Amirbai Karnataki or any lesser known female singer with similar singing style.

I heard the same song on an audio clip and my guess is that it is Shamshad Begum’s voice. The audio clip :

The voice in audio is definitely Shamshad Begam’s but the voice in the video sounds different.

Atul ji,
TAQDEER-1943,is a real forgotten and obscure movie, about which hardly any info will be available on the net,However I remember this movie and have my notes about it.
It was a Mehboob Production film, directed by Mehboob,Music by R.Gaznavi, and Lyrics by Mahrul Kadri. There is one song in the film written by Agha M.Shirazi(who also acted in the film) and one song by Anjum Pilibhiti also. There were 10 songs in the film,2 chorus songs,4 solos of Shamshad begum and 4 duets of Shamshad and Motilal. The voice in the above song is positively of Shamshad Begum, though it sounds slightly different(this type of variation in sounds can be found even in Lata,Asha,Rafi and many others). This point will be clarified when other Shamshad songs of this film are heard.

The cast of the film was Chandramohan, motilal,Nargis,Jilloobai,Kayam ali,Ansari,Shirazi,Laddan etc.The Story was by Ghulam Mohd. and s/p and dialogues were by Agha Jaani Kashmiri.

It was a lightweight comedy about Justice Gangaprasad(Chandramohan) and a Theatre owner Seth Badriprasad(NM Charlie),who lose their daughter and son in Kumbha Mela( This is where this trend started for future films, especially Manmohan Desai type films) respectively.
The children are found but exchanged and Gangaprasad brings up Babu(Motilal) as a rich playboy and Badriprasad raises Salma(Nargis) as a dancer in his Theatre. They fall in love, causing a problem of class Difference. This is revealed when their identities are revealed.
Funny thing is Gangaprasad’s wife(Jilloo bai) raises Motilal thinking that he is a Girl. The scene when it is revealed that he is a Boy,is very hilarious.
There is a song in the film,’Meri Mata Bharat Mata’,in which Nargis is shown holding a sicle and a cloth bundle, with waving fielda behind her. This reminds us of her role and posters of ‘Mother India’-1957(also a Mehboob prodn.)

contd….
here are some Titbits….
Baby Fatima (Nargis) was all of only 14 when she became Heroine of this film.
When mrs.Mehboob was doing her make up and wrapping her up in a Saree, she was mugging up the dialogues.
Mehboob told her that if she doesn’t do this role,he will incur heavy losses, thus she agreed to do the role.
She was also very happy, when told that all her songs will be sung by Shamshad begum.
She had to wear high heels to match the height of her first hero,Motilal.
Taqdeer was a Hit film.
