Ae mere dil jo chal diye

Posted on: March 21, 2012

Most music lovers are passive music lovers in the sense that they listen to songs that are on the air/TV etc. Then there are active music lovers who like certain songs and they actively seek those songs to listen to.

Among active music lovers, there are one small group who is not satisfied with the commonly heard songs and they venture into the unknown, seeking songs that they may not have heard before. Looking for such songs has become quite easy these days thanks to internet. If one decided to look for songs one has never heard before, one always comes across several such songs on a regular basis.

Whenever I have decided to look for unheard songs, I have always found myself inundated with musical gems.

Here is a song that I discovered just now. This song is from a forgotten movie called “Sarhad” (1960). This movie, which was an Alankar Chitra Production, had Devanand, Suchitra Sen, Raagini, Sajjan, Lalita Pawar etc in it.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra. Superb lyrics, wonderful composition and nice singing- what more can one look for ! The song sounds like a gem on the very first hearing itself and subsequent hearing confirm that first impression.

Only the audio of this song is available, but it is clear that the song was picturised on Suchitra Sen.
PS-Now I am aware of the video too, thanks to a reader’s comment.

Song-Ae mere dil jo chal diye (Sarhad)(1960) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-C Ramchandra
Chorus

Lyrics

ae mere dil jo chal diye
kaise qaraar paayenge
ae mere dil jo chal diye
chhod ke kisi ki gali
ham to kahin na jaayenge
ae mere dil jo chal diye

pyaar ka watan yahi
hai yahi pyaar ka jahaan
door ye jahaan bhi
kaise rahenge meri jaan
phir kaise
ham tujhko behlaayenge
chhod ke kisi ki gali
ham to kahin na jaayenge
ae mere dil jo chal diye

aa aa aa aa
aaaa aa aa

aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aaa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa aaa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa aaa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa aaa
gar wo tere nahin to
nahin to phir
kiska ye intezaar hai
beqaraar ho ke bhi kaise hamen qaraar hai
ye tujhko fursat mein samjhaayenge
chhod ke kisi ki gali
ham to kahin na jaayenge
ae mere dil jo chal jiye
hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm

ae mere dil jo chal jiye

What a superb song! Kudos tor Asha Bhonsle for beautiful rendering.

After decades, I heard this song on YT yesterday and instantly I marked this song as ‘favourite’ to be considered for my write-up.

Atul ji,
SARHAD-1960 was a film which was different than the usual Dev Anand movies. The background and the role did not suit Dev Anand at all and the film did not click with audience. The saving grace was the music of C Ramchandra(assisted by Johnny Gomes and Datta Davjekar).
The film was produced by K.H.Kapadiya(father of Dimple Kapadiya) and directed by Shankar Mukherjee, who later directed many hits of Dev Anand like,Baarish,Banarasi Babu,Pyar Muhabbat,Mahal in addition to Jhumroo of kishore kumar and few others.
The s/play was by Madhusudan Kalelkar, sory by Ranjan Bose and dialogues by vrajendra Gaur.
Amar (Dev Anand) runs away to the jungle when beaten unjustly by his father. He is found and brought up by a sardar of the jungle people. After growing up,Amar becomes sardar.he is tough, strict and cruel. He is called ‘Maalik’.
Gulabi(Ragini) the dancer loves him,Jagga, leader of a group loves Gulabi and hates Amar.
One day Amar’s father comes there with Mala(S.Sen)-his adopted child.Amar refuses to go with him and father returns leaving Mala with Amar. The love blooms, which is resented by Gulabi and Jagga.
Mala trie to improve Amar’s nature.Gulabi and Jagga incite the tribal people and they revolt against Amar.
The rest of the story details how mala helps him to quell the revolt and finally they both cross the Sarhad and enter the city for ever.

Dimple Kapadia’s father was Chunibhai Kapadia NOT KH Kapadia. Film magazine journos of the 70s often referred to him as CBI (as in Chunibhai Bureau of Information) since he leaked so much information and gossip about his ‘beti’ and ‘damaad’ to them 🙂

Suhan ji,
Thanks for the correction.Kantibhai Kapadiya was the brother of Chunibhai Kapadiya-father of Dimple Kapadiya.

Discovered this song just a couple of days ago on the internet. Came to this page while searching for more information about it. Truly amazing and was totally surprised that I hadn’t heard this.

I decided to add my comment because this song really is a rare gem which transports the listener to another world. The music is truly melodious with the tabla adding a beautiful contrast to Asha’s lilting voice and the wonderful, wonderful lyrics.

Complete magic!
