Mitwa mitwa

I have often mentioned it that lyrics are the soul of songs. One of the main reasons why the songs of the golden era went on to become timeless classics was that great importance was given to lyrics of the songs. There have been instances when the music directors patiently waited for the lyricist to come up with the lyrics of the song.
I have recounted an instance when S D Burman, who was waiting for several days for Shailendra to write the lyrics of a song sent his son R D Burman to Shailendra’s home with express instructions that he should come back home only with the lyrics else he should not come back. R D Burman went to Shailendra’s house and told him about his dilemma. Shailendra stated that writing a song was not an assembly line process. He needed to be in the proper mood and only then he could get the right idea for the lyrics of the song. R D Burman persisted and soon it became night. Shailendra took R D Burman with him on a walk at the beach. There he saw the moon and that gave him the inspiration for the song. Do you have a piece of paper, he asked R D Burman. R D Burman only had a matchbox. Shailendra wrote the lyrics of that piece of paper. And the result of all this exercise was the immortal song “Khoya Khoya Chaand Khula Aasmaan”.
It is not necessary for the lyrics of a song to be long to be effective the way schoolkids of my days thought that one would get more marks in exam for writing more number of pages. 🙂 Here is a song whose lyrics must be one of the briefest lyrics in Hindi movies. No, it is not a curtailed song. It is a full fledged song over three minutes long. The lyrics are very brief but very effective. In fact, this lyrics has got to be one of the most effective melancholic songs in Hindi movies.
Here is this song where brief lyrics does the job. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. S D Burman, incidentally the same music director as the one mentioned in the above tale took the brief lyrics and turned it into a masterpiece with Talat Mehmood.
Here is this wonderful masterpiece from “Devdas”(1955).
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.
