Gunguna rahe hain bhanwre khil rahi hai kali kali

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The regular visitors to this blog must have noticed that we are seeing more Asha Bhosle songs posted in the blog nowadays than anybody else’s. The reason is that she is heading towards reaching a milestone figure of 1000 songs in the blog. I have been remiss in writing post of Asha Bhosle songs. Let me rectify this. The song I have chosen is my personal favourite. Asha Bhonsle’s solos from “Sujata” and “Bandini” under S D Burman, are a treasure which I knew from early days.

The year 1969 was more monumental in my life than most simply because I was born that year. The year is also an astronomically important one because man kind reached the moon and first human astronauts walked on the moon. I have no idea if aliens, supernaturals or whatever the American Sci-fi movies want us to believe, have been there or not. And then there this monumental happening, that supposedly changed the Hindi film world and Film music. Too much has already been written about Rajesh Khanna-Kishore-R.D.Burman wave which started with ‘Aradhana’. While I love some songs of Aradhana, cant say I am crazy about all of them. All said and done the wave didnt last long.

As for R. D. Burman changing the Hindi film music scene, as a younger cousin took pains to explain to me, he did that with “Teesri Manzil”(1967). Anyways, from what I can see with benefit of hindsight and not being too close to the epicentre(of the storm), Hindi film music has always seen a change every 10 years or so all through the Golden Era. In the 40’s there were Naushad and Anil Biswas who were trend setters. Than in the 50 Shankar-Jiakishan did change the face of film music with “Barsaat”. Than they went on to reinvent themselves in the 60’s , which started in 1961 with “Jab pyaar kisi se hota hai”.

In between there were many more MD’s who were making waves in the world of film music, S D Burman, O.P. Nayyar, L-P, Madan Mohan, & Roshan to name a few. As a show case to R D Burman’s talent, if I must choose some films, I would choose “Amar Prem”, “Teesri Manzil” and ‘Aandhi”. The song “Mere sapnon ki Raani kab aayegi tu” had an eight year old elder brother in “Jiya ho Jya ho jiya kuch bol do”, the music arrangements are also similar to my untrained ears.

I am trying to discuss a duet from “Aradhana”. There are three duets in the film, one Lata-Rafi, one Asha-Rafi and one Kishore-Lata. “Kora kaagaz thha yeh man mera” is S. D. Burman’s composition, has not been discussed in the blog. The song “Gunguna rahen hain bhanvre khil rahi hai kali kali ” is composed by S. D. Burman, written by Anand Bakshi and singers are Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi. The whole world knows this song. I dont know if I am being presumptuous in opting to discuss this song. But the lyrics were already there in memory, so I thought why not make use of it. The song is picturized on Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Sharmila Tagore had made her debut which Shammi Kapoor and she is still going strong whereas Rajesh Khanna had burnt out before the 70’s were over, as a charismatic screen super star.

thanks for including this song – these songs did a great service – they were half opium and half tonic for common people at a time when there was no other cheap means of entertainment were available. Your blog is doing a great job – please keep it up

Excellent write up Nahm. I remember being very affected by Aradhna when I saw it, as a 9 year old. The songs are all very pretty, and I loved them then and still do. Gunguna rahe was my favorite, being more upbeat, and of course, the killer song – bagon me bahar hai.

Thanks, nahm. Yaadein taaza ho gayin. I’ve always been fond of “gunguna rahen hain”. Maybe it was my “last bastion” support for Rafi saab in a film where Kishore overshadowed him. But I’d like to think this song is lovely to listen to in its own right. I do listen to it a lot.

I like “Kora kaagaz thha yeh man mera” a lot too. As i like the duets in ‘Tere Mere Sapne” “Abhimaan’, ‘Jewel Thief”.I owe my love for Hindi film songs to S. D. Burman’s songs are more or less , Madan Mohan songs to some extent, Lyricist poets, mainly Majrooh, and the one voices of Rafi and Lata. The list is quite long anyway.

This is purely my personal opinion but sometimes Sharmila`s “ADAAYEIN or i will call it sharmila`s inability to dance spoils the spirit of the song” (Immediately I remember “Khayee hai re hamne kasam sang rehne ki”from Talaash & another song “Aaj ko jhunli raathmaa”)
(By the way I am a huge fan of Sharmila`s acting through eyes in Gulzar`s MAUSAM & NAMKEEN & Hrishikesh Mukherjee`s SATYAKAM or even Raj Khosla`s SUNNY)
Spare me Sharmila Tagore fans!!!!! I hope I am not hurting your feelings.
