Dar pe aaye hain qasam le

Posted on: April 30, 2012

Though I have not watched “Love In Shimla” (1960) but I have gained enough information about the movie by watching the picturisation of various songs of the movie and by going through the comments of readers who have clearly watched the movie. 🙂

Armed with this second hand, but accurate information about this movie, it is clear to me that this movie was based on the fairy tale of Cindrella, with the debutant Sadhana playing Cindrella and Joy Mukherji, the other debutant playing the prince.

As many as seven songs from this movie have been discussed so far. Based on those songs, I had concluded that Rafi sang for Joy Mukherji in all the songs. So I was quite surprised to see that there was a song in this movie which was sung by Mukesh. I wondered how and on whom this song was picturised.

From the picturisation, it is seen that the song is picturised on Joy Mukherji and Sadhana alright. Joy Mukherji, obviously smitten by Sadhana reaches her home surreptitiosly at night and climbs the first floor of the house by means of a ladder, all the while singing this song. Now what is the use of coming in surreptitiously in the dark of night in order not to arouse anyone’s suspicion and then bursting into a song thereafter ! We already know about Ava’s theory of acoustic radiation which states that sound in Hindi movies propagates faster than light and reaches everywhere immediately. So it is obvious that everyone else and not just the lovebirds become aware what is going on. But the others , following the commandments of Hindi movie songs (thou shall not interrupt a love song in its track), the spoilsports in the household wait for the song to get over before making their move and switching on the lights.

I guess they did not have any dogs too, neither in the house nor in the streets there. I can assure you that with our alert watchdog Bhhole, no lovebirds can ever think of singing romantic songs at night anywhere within his hearing range.

Khair, this song is sung nicely by Mukesh and it is nice to see Joy Mukherji lip syncing in Mukesh’s voice. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Iqbal Qureshy.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Dar pe aaye hain qasam le (Love in Shimla)(1960) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Iqbal Qureshi

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

dar pe aaye hain
qasam le
dil hatheli par hai
sun le
hum na jaayenge
dar pe aaye hain
qasam le
dil hatheli par hai
sun le
hum na jaayenge

zindagi mein to kisi se
pyaar karna thha zaroor
pyaar karna thha zaroor
mar gaye hum aap par
waise bhi marna thha zaroor
haan ji marna thha zaroor
jaan lab par hai
qasam le
saans jab tak hai
tu sun le
hum na jaayenge
dar pe aaye hain
qasam le
dil hatheli par hai
sun le
hum na jaayenge

yooun na thokar maariye ke
toot jaayega yeh dil
toot jaayega yeh dil
aap pachhtaayenge phir na
haath aayega yeh dil
haath aayega yeh dil
le is hi dil ki qasam le
khaak ho kar bhi tu sun le
hum na jaayenge
dar pe aaye hain
qasam le
dil hatheli par hai
sun le
hum na jaayenge

maikada bhi raah mein thha
chhod aaye hain usse
chhod aaye hain usse
jaam apne haath mein thha
tod aaye hain usse
tod aaye hain usse
tere pyaase hain
qasam le
door se aaye hain
sun le
hum na jaayenge
dar pe aaye hain
qasam le
dil hatheli par hai
sun le
hum na jaayenge

Ha ha, love the write-up. With its usual Atulisms. 🙂

“Thou shall not interrupt a love song in its track” – so true. 🙂

And yes, your Bhhole would not stand for all this romantic stuff. But then, maybe it’s a good thing your Bhhole wasn’t around there, otherwise we’d not have had this song at all. 🙂

The Mukesh song that always comes readily to my mind when I think of Mukesh-Joy Mukherjee is “hum chhod chale hain mehfil ko” from Ji Chahta Hai (1964).

Was just wondering – Ji Chahta Hai, Dil Chahta Hai…so similar in meaning. Yet, the latter became a super-duper hit, the former – I don’t know how the movie did.

Ava’s theory no 2 should also say – If a hero and heroine are singing a song, only the hero/heroine/audience hears it. The rest will sleep away no matter how much racket they make.

Without such artistic licenses, we wouldnt have the golden era of Hindi film songs. As we saw in these film all and sundry were greatest singers, composers and poets.

Raja ji, Ava ji, Nahm ji, Atul ji,

The actual situation in the story line is as follows. Joy Mukherjee has come to this household as a potential match for Azra, the daughter of the head of the house. Sadhna is the niece, and cousin sister of Azra, and of course nowhere in the matchmaking picture. But of course, powers that be (I mean the producer, director, storywriter) would ordain otherwise. Joy Mukherji falls heads over heels for Sadhna.

On the day of this song, the entire family and the esteem guest are to go for a theatre performance. Sadhna excuses herself on some pretext, because she wants to stay away from Joy Mukherji. That is why we see her all dressed up as if ready to go somewhere. And Joy Mukhreji – well he feigns another excuse at the theatre, and rushes back home. He knows Sadhna would not open the door being alone at home, so he starts a song, much in the same vein as Romeo would sernade Juliet from the garden. Of course Romeo never thought of bringing in a ladder, else that masterpiece would never have ended in a tragedy. 😀

Of course, Sadhna is aware of the situation and is visibly in a dilemma – and is a very unwilling participant in this song.

The lights that we see shining on the two lovebirds at the end of the song, are the headlights of the car returning with the rest of the family.

So while the song is happening, the rest of the house is actually empty – is liye sab chaltaa hai. 🙂
