Rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen to nibhaayen kaise
Posted June 25, 2012
on:“Dil Ki Raahen” (1973) was a Majida Movie presentation. It was directed by B R Ishara. The movie had Rakesh Pandey, Rehana Sultan, Amrit Lakhanpal,Dilip Dutt, Rakesh Pandey, Sulochana, Johnny Whisky etc in it.
This movie, which attracted an A certificate from the censors, duly flopped at the box office. The nice songs of this movie suffered as a result.
Here is a wonderful song from “Dil Ki Raahen” (1973). It is sung by Lata. Naqsh Llayalpuri is the lyricist. Madan Mohan, whose birth anniversary falls today (25 june) is the music director.
Only the audio of this song is available. The video seems to have disappeared and that may not be such a bad thing. I have a feeling that this song is better heard than watched.
The audio of the song appears to be taken from a vishesh Jaimala programme presented by Madan Mohan, because Madan Mohan’s voice appears before the song.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.
On popular demand, Sudhir jee has now provided the translation of the lyrics, so one can now appreciate the lyrics even more knowledgeably.

Song-Rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen to nibhaayen kaise (Dil Ki Raahen)(1973) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Naqsh Llayalpuri, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
to nibhaayen kaise
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
to nibhaayen kaise
har taraf aag hai
daaman ko bachaayen kaise
har taraf aag hai
daaman ko bachaayen kaise
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
dil ki raahon mein
uthaate hain jo duniyaawaale
dil ki raahon mein
uthaate hain jo duniyaawaale
koi kehde ke wo deewar
giraayen kaise
koi kehde ke wo deewar
giraayen kaise
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
dard mein doobe huye
naghme hazaaron hain magar
dard mein doobe huye
naghme hazaaron hain magar
saaz e dil toot gaya ho
to sunaayen kaise
saaz e dil toot gaya ho
to sunaayen kaise
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
bojh hota jo ghamon ka
to uthaa bhi lete
bojh hota jo ghamon ka
to uthaa bhi lete
zindagi bojh bani ho
to uthaayen kaise
zindagi bojh bani ho
to uthaayen kaise
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
to nibhaayen kaise
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen

rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen to nibhaayen kaise
The customs, the promises of love
They are hard to fulfill, hard to endure
How does one abide by them (for a lifetime)?
har taraf aag hai daaman ko bachaayen kaise
The flames (of distrust, of resentment)
Engulf from all directions
How can one protect oneself (from being burnt)?
(NOTES: ‘daaman’ essentially means the flowing garments. In context it implies ‘self’ – when faced with or engulfed with flames, the effort is to keep the flowing part of one’s garments bunched in, to avoid catching fire and being burnt oneself. Recall the song – “Daaman Mein Aag Lagaa Baitthe”.)
dil ki raahon mein uthaate hain jo duniyaa waale
koi kehde ke wo deewar giraayen kaise
The resentful assailants of this world
Obstruct the path of love with walls of hostility
Pray someone say
How to pull down these walls (of malice)
dard mein doobe huye naghme hazaaron hain magar
saaz e dil toot gaya ho to sunaayen kaise
A thousand melodies soaked in agony
Swirl in the mind
But how can they be played
When strings of the heart are broken
bojh hota jo ghamon ka to uthaa bhi lete
zindagi bojh bani ho to uthaayen kaise
If it was just the burden of sorrows
It may have been possible to bear it
But when life itself becomes a burden
Pray someone say, how to bear it?

If I am not wrong, the chords of Sitar are played by Great Ustad Raees Khan. Listen to them carefully. They are magical. And Madan’s composition is beyond par.

rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen to nibhaayen kaise
Even if one were to, how to fulfil the duties of love
har taraf aag hai, daaman ko bachaayen kaise
There is fire everywhere, how to save your veil
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
fulfil the duties of love
dil ki raahon mein uthaate hain jo duniyaawaale
In my heart’s path, the walls that people raise
koi kehde ke wo deewar giraayen kaise
Even if somebody says, how to break them
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
fulfil the duties of love
dard mein doobe huye naghme hazaaron hain magar
There are thousands of songs dipped in pain
saaz e dil toot gaya ho to sunaayen kaise
But if heart is broken, how to play them
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
fulfil the duties of love
bojh hota jo ghamon ka to uthaa bhi lete
Had it been a weight of our sorrows, we would have lifted it,
zindagi bojh bani ho to uthaayen kaise
(but) life itself has become a weight, how to lift it
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen to nibhaayen kaise
rasm e ulfat ko nibhaayen
Even if one were to, how to fulfil the duties of love
fulfil the duties of love

the music is remarkable but a pity that no print for the movie is available despite it being on a sensitive and offbeat subject ,will love to watch the seventies drama by ishara ,he is controversial but an interesting maker of off beat subjects ,the urdu gazal in seventies was best explored by madan mohan as here along with dastak ,heer ranjha ,laila majnu, mausam and many others .

I agree with Usmanji. I too would love to watch Dil Ki Rahen again. Years ago, they had telecast it on Doordarshan, but sadly now the print is not available anywhere. If anyone comes to lay their hands on a copy of this film, do post a message here.

I am just curious, who is the dancing couplel in the song? One day, just the first line popped in my head, while going to work, and couldn’t remember the tune. I had heard the song but neven came up again until now. So, I had to hear the song when I came back from work. And now, I can’t get rid of it. I can’t sing any other song! One of those things… you know !!
