This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Yesterday I was just browsing in the blog and also looking for a song of Asha Bhosle to send on her birthday. Two days ago someone’s comment alerted me that Asha Bhonsle’s birthday is approaching. I remembered that last year I had sent the lyrics of this song from “sujata’.
So just like that I came accross this song, which is actually a collection of sha’ir’s of Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
Faiz Ahmed ‘ Faiz ‘, is a renowned Urdu poet of the 20th Century, revered in the urdu literary circles. It is rare to find a film song written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz. This is a first in this blog.
When I saw the link I thought it is a Shammi Kapoor song and in picturized in Kashmir, it must have already been posted. I had to search for the name of the film , and found that it is from “Jaanwar”(1965). The song is a duet of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. I found it to be very different one in terms of Asha’s other songs during that period. And the music is by Shankar-Jaikishan. Lata has been a permanent fixture with S-J, that they have rarely used Asha for their songs. This is just my observation. The famous Asha songs came very late in’Andaaz’ (1972).
So, here is wishing a very happy birthday to the most prolific playback singer of Hindi films. As seen from the stats page Asha Bhonsle is scheduled to complete 1100 songs here. As usual, I am sending this at the eleventh hour, and hoping that Atul ji will find a place for this song post today. I do not plan it that way, lekin aisa ho jaata hai 😦 .

Song-Raat yoon dil mein teri khoyi huyi yaad aayi (Jaanwar)(1965) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Faiz Ahmad Faiz, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
raat yoon dil mein teri
khoyi huyi yaad aayee
jaise veeraane mein
chupke se bahaar aa jaaye
aise sehraaon mein haule se chale baad-naseem
jaise beemar kobe-wajah qaraar aa jaaye
bujhaa jo rauzan-e-zindaan to dil yeh samjhaa hai
ke teri maang sitaaron se bhar gayee hogi
chamak utthin hain salaakhen
to ham ne jaana hai
ke ab sehar tere rukh par
bikhar gayee hogi
na gul khile hain
na un se mile na mai pee hai
ajeeb rang mein
ab ke bahaar guzri hai
tum aaye ho nashab-e-intezaar guzri hai
talaash mein hai sehar
baar baar guzri hai
naseem tere shabistaan se
ho ke aayi hai
meri sehar mein mehek hai tere badan ki si
jab tujhe yaad kar liyaa
subah mehek mehek utthi
jab tera gham jagaa liyaa
raat machal machal gayee
na jaane kis liye ummeedwaar baitthaa hoon
ek aisi raah pe
jo teri rehguzar bhi nahin

So far as I can recollect the last couplet is by Firaq and not Faiz. But, it is subject to varification.
