Do haklon ka suno fasaana

The 9th song in this series ” Lata with Uncommon singers “, is from film Subah Ka Tara-1954. The song is a ‘Natkhat’ song between two sahelis.
I have not seen this film, but I know that this was a film about a woman who faces lot many miseries in her life and finally she sees a silver lining to the dark clouds hovering over her, like the Morning Star ( Subah ka Tara ),heralding a bright and joyful New Day !
This was a Rajkamal film, produced and directed by V.Shantaram. The music was by C.Ramchandra. The 9 songs in the film had some ever lasting gems like “Gayaa andhera, hua ujara” a duet by Talat and Lata, and the first famous song for Usha Mangeshkar, ” Bhabhi aayi “.
This was one of those rare films where the entire family- V.Shantaram, his First wife Jayashree and their daughter Rajashree had acted.
Next only to Madan Mohan ( 10 films ), C.Ramchandra had used Talat Mehmood in 7 films, but barring a few, not many Talat songs became famous with C.Ramchandra. This is in contrast-percentagewise- to just ONE film each by Naushad, Sajjad, Sardar Malik, Husnalal Bhagatram and TWO films of Khayyam, O P Nayyar and Vasant Desai, who gave more Talat hits than C.Ramchandra.
Coming back to today’s song, it is sung by Lata and Chandrakanta.
Now, who is/was this Chandrakanta ?
When I tried to find out, I got convinced that this was the ONLY song Chandrakanta ever sang in films.
But,who was she ?
There is no information about her anywhere. No wonder either ! When there is no information on a singer who sang 30 songs in 16 films (Raja Gul or Gulraz), how can one expect to get information on a singer who has sung only ONE song in ONE film ?
Chandrakanta had also acted in this film and has probably lip synched her own song on screen. On checking, I found that this was her only film in which she acted.
When I was about to give up my efforts,to search info on Chandrakanta,I came across few comments, made 4 years ago,on Memsaab’s Blog, and I got some information.
Chandrakanta was the sister of Puri Bothers- Chaman puri, Madan Puri, Amrish Puri and Harish Puri (He was the only brother who did not join films.)
After marriage she became Chandrakanta Mehra. Most likely, she is the same Chandrakanta, who acted and sang with Lata in Subah ka Tara.
The cast of Subah ka Tara was Pradeep Kumar, Jayashree, Baby Rajashri, V.Shantaram Chandrakanta, Shakuntala and along with many others Amirbai Karnataki.( She had stopped acting in 1943 to concentrate on playback singing. When her singing assignments diminished, she once again started acting from 1950 onwards. Her last film was Bankelal-1972).
Here is the song by Lata and Chandrakanta….

Arunji,
You deserve commendation for unearthing such rare gems. But did you realise that this song would be today considered insensitive and politically incorrect?
