Mr. Romeo (1973) was produced by Subodh Mukharjee and directed by Subhash Mukharjee. It starred Shashi Kapoor, Rinku Jaiswal, Kiran Kumar, Sarita, Utpal Dutt, Ranjeet, Narendra Nath, Achala Sachdev, Pinchoo Kapoor, Rajan Haksar, etc
One song of this movie (out of seven) has already been covered in this blog.
As mentioned in my earlier post, during the 70s decade I had a blast of time watching Hindi and English movies. Then it is bound to happen that I would have had to have a favourite actor (male and/or female). Well, in my case it was Shashi Kapoor. I was so enamored by his charisma that I saw all his movies, many of them more than once, till he was the dashing hero (looking trim and fit). I stopped watching his movies he started to gain weight. In fact he deliberately started to increase his weight for his role in Utsav, and that was the weight which he could not (or did not) reduce. It made me quite sad to see this handsome hero in that state. I think the last movie of his which I saw more than once was Basera. Although there were some more movies released after this time where he was his old (read slim) self.
Well, in this masti of watching Shashi Baba’s movies, I watched Mr. Romeo at least 4 – 5 times, and I must say I enjoyed the movie primarily due to its music. Pancham was surely creating waves by then, but occasionally, he threw in a beauty of a song which baffled many of the puritans of “old” Hindi film music.
This was one song which was an experiment, with short phrases of notes woven in a complicated mesh of beats, and thus becomes a very difficult song to sing. Hats off, once again, to Lata Mangeshkar for delivering such a complicated song in an effortless way.
This song was not included in the movie. Only the audio of this song is available, which has been uploaded to my You Tube channel
“Ja Re Ja Main Tose Na Boloon” is a solo song by Lata Mangeshkar, which is penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Rahul Dev Burman.
PS-Note by Atul: Lata is one singer who reaches her milestones without any conscious effort on our part. She had reached her 2600th song without anyone noticing and so I did not mention this fact at that time. This Lata song happens to be her 2601th song in the blog. So let us celebrate her 26 centuries of songs in the blog with this rare and superb song.
Song-Ja Re Ja Main Tose Na Boloon (Mr Romeo)(1973) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
O o o
ja re ja main tose na boloon,
ja re ja main tose na boloon,
samjha hai kya
toone mujhe ae ae
daulat se main dil ko na toloon oon
ja re ja main tose na boloon,
samjha hai kya toone mujhe ae
daulat se main dil ko na toloon oon
ja re ja main tose na boloon
meri nazar mein hai teri nazar ki masti,
meri juda tujhse koi nahin hai hasti,
O meri nazar mein hai teri nazar ki masti,
meri juda tujhse koi nahin hai hasti,
jo tu hai, woh main hoon, aur kuch nahin hoon
main warna sang tere na doloon,
ja re ja main tose na boloon
maana zaroori hai paisa nahin par aisa,
paisa bahot dekha, dekha nahi tum jaisa,
maana zaroori hai paisa nahin par aisa,
paisa bahot dekha, dekha nahin tum jaisa,
le aaye, tu heere, to bhi na maanoon oon
do meethi baaton se khush ho loon,
ja re ja main tose na boloon
kaisi suhaani hai saawan ki lambi raatein,
aaja Mohabbat ki cheden wohi phir baatein,
o kaisi suhani hai saawan ki lambi raatein,
aaja Mohabbat ki cheden wohi phir baatein,
tu meri bainyaan ko thaam le saiyaan aa
sharmaaon,
main ghunghat na kholoon
ja re ja main tose na boloon,
ja re ja main tose na boloon,
samjha hai kya toone mujhe ae ae
daulat se main dil ko na toloon oon
jaa re jaa main tose na boloon oon
jaa re jaa
