Here is a quick quiz from me (searching, googling etc. allowed). Which song was the 5000th song in the blog ? Easy, you say, it is the song Hamen to loot liya milke husnwaalon ne (Al Hilaal)(1958). Alright, here is the next question- who lip syncs the immmortal qawwaali ? It is difficult, but not difficult for those who have gone through the huge writeup on this song in the blog. 🙂 The artist lip syncing this song is called Sheikh.
Alright, here is the next followup question. Name any other song picturised on Sheikh. If you google it, the top results will give you songs picturised on Farooque Sheikh. Sheikh of al Hilal does not exist as far as google is concerned. 🙂
If you have seen detective serials (like CID), people who have seen suspects are called by the detectives, they tell the identikit artist what the suspect looked like and soon a very accurate sketch of the suspect gets ready.
But it does not happen that way in real life with most people, or even in movies.:) In one movie, someone is called to get the skech of a dreaded terrorist made and he supplies descriptions of Johny Lever.:)
If I am ever called to describe the face of someone I saw, my standard answer would be that I have no clue. Remembering the face of people whom you say just once takes photographic memory and my memory whatever I have comes without the facilities to save. 🙂 I often cannot identify well known actors that I have seen several times, viz say Madhubala, so you cannot expect me to identify Sheikh.
I cannot identify small time actors, but our beloved inhouse facereader Prakashchandra can. I feel that he is the only one among us who can get an accurate face of a suspect made if he is ever called by the CID sleuths. 🙂
So, thanks to the identity provided by Prakashchandra, I present to you another song featuring Sheikh ! And this time he shares the limelight with Helen !
Here is this superb song which is sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt and it is picturised as a club dance song picturised on Sheikh, Helen and many other female dancers as a club dance. A bemused Nirupa Roy, accompanied by a scheming Pran can also be seen among the audience, seated on a table.
The lively song and dance is quite O P Nayyaresque, but in reality the song is written by Bharat Vyas and music is composed by Kalyanji.
With this song, “Bedard Zamaanaa Kya Jaane”(1959) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Kalyan Ji started his career by giving music under the name of ‘Kalyan Ji’ and also as ‘Kalyan Ji Vir Ji Shah’ (Vir Ji was his father’s name, which he used to add as per Gujarati Tradition). Kalyanji Virji Shah scored music in Samrat Chandragupta (1959) followed by ‘Post Box 999’ in 1959 itself. Later his brother Anand Ji joined him, and then he was called ‘Kalyanji Anandji’.

He played as Cavender the famous cigarette brand in those days with sailor’s cap and white dress. I think for ads they walked on stilts around Gateway of India to the utter surprise of kids.

This was one of the two Hindi films for which Kalyanji alone had composed music. The other film, I believe was Ghar Ghar ki Baat (1959).
Thnans for the nice song
