And so wrote the scribe

wo waade mohabbat ke
kya ho gaye
Nowhere other than in love, is the weight felt more heavily of sarcasm of that age old phrase – “promises are meant to be broken”. After the flowers and dreams, the sun and the stars, it is inevitable that the reality checks in. The reality of life that is – the reality of relations, the reality of social variances, the reality of the difficulties of life that will incessantly continue to overwhelm, and above all the realities of personalities. More often than not, it is the personal motivations, personal desires and dogmas, personal fancies and choices, that manifest as roadblocks and potholes on the road to satisfied love. Those who are not well adept at managing and driving around these obstacles, more often than not, find themselves in the wells of misery.
The theme of love is such. There is a very famous and very frequently quoted sh’er (couplet) from the very famous ghazal by Jigar Moradabaadi, that says
ye ishq nahin aasaan, bas itna samajh lijey
ik aag ka dariyaa hai, aur doob ke jaana hai
This love
Tis not a child’s game
O, be aware
And know this much
It is a river of fire
To be crossed by drowning
In many cases of such fallouts, it is the truant heart that is the culprit. The affections are not steady, the eyes will stray and the heart will start ‘double timing’. Or maybe even completely shift its affiliations. While maintaining a pretension, and sometimes not even that, the heart strikes out a path to another, leaving the earlier partner pining and waiting.
It is true one has no control over another. The emotions that may follow such an episode and its discovery, are disbelief, extreme hurt and pain, and an all consuming anxiety that will at times express itself in vicious anger, or sometimes as resignation and regret. The heart wallows in self pity, feeling to be the helpless victim of the cruel tendencies of the one who was once considered dearest to the heart. The willful deceit and deception breaks the heart – a figurative expression of the feeling inside. And the words that come to the lips are somewhat as expressed in this song.
The song is from the 1955 film ‘Oot Pataang’. In my post of 30th November (‘Kaanta Laaga Re Saanwariya Teekha Teekha’), I had mentioned that this film holds out a sincere promise as a treasure house of delightful songs. Of the eight songs in this film, four are already showcased here. This is the fifth gem of an offering to find its place on the blog. The words from the pen of DN Madhok have been so beautifully strung together into this poignant and sentimental melody by the genius of Vinod. The singing voice is that of Lata Mangeshkar. The film is produced by Naveen Chandra Shah under the banner of GM Pictures, and is directed by Chandulal Shah. The cast of actors includes Usha Kiran, Agha, Anwar, Maruti, Jankidas, Indira, Mumtaz Begum, Vaneeta, Rasheed Khan, Shammi Chaudhary, Madhuri, Dubey, Khaja Ahmed, Vijaylakshmi.
The rendering is so soulful, and the words, they will simply slice through the heart, especially the following lines
chale wo sautaniya ke
meri gali ho ke
That he is going to
His new lady love, my rival
Passing through the lane I live in
Aah, what deceitful intent, and what audacity. That these words are written shows there are people like this also existing amongst us. Listen to the song, feel the pain. And contemplate.

Thanks for the song, one of my favorites.
I do feel the pain oozing out of such songs and surprisingly they give me deep solace, difficult to describe in words. It takes me very near to true soul music.
