In my school and college days, we were taught that our essays needed to be precise and to the point and that beating about the bush instead of coming to the point was not recommended.
Much to my surprise, I discovered that Hindi movie songs, especially romantic songs typically had lyrics that would beat about the bush and would rarely come to the point. Instead of stating “I love you” and be done with it, Hindi movie songs would refer to “Baadal”, “Aasmaan”, “Chaatak”, “Mor”, “jhoola”,”Chilman”, “dupatta” etc etc. As a conscientious student, I disapproved of such collosal waste of stationery. 🙂
It was in 1971 and 1972 where we found several songs that began to use lyrics that were direct and to the point.
Just take a sampling. We had songs like,
Aao tumhe main pyaar sikha doon(Upaasna), Chupke se dil de de nahin te shor mach jaayegaa (Maryada), Mujhe thhand lag rahi hai(Main Sundar Hoon), Priye Praneshwari(Hum Tum aur Woh), Aao na galey lagaa lo na o jaane jaan (Mere Jeewan Saathi), Ik cheez maangte hain ham tumse pehli baar(Babul ki galiyaan) etc.
“Aankhon Aankhon Mein”(1972) had almost all its songs falling under the category of direct on your face brand of songs. The leading lady would sing Gayaa bachpan jo aayi jawaani and the leading lad would respond Teri umar naadaan hai (Aankhon Aankhon Mein) . THen the two of them would sing a direct action duet that would go Aankhon aankhon mein baat hone do .
Here is the fourth song from “Aankhon Aankhon Mein”(1972). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. As can be noticed from the lyrics, no birds and the bees have been harmed while penning these lyrics. 🙂
The song is picturised on Rakesh Roshan (trying hard to impersonate Rajesh Khanna) and Raakhi.
