“Geet” (1944) was produced by A R Kardar and directed by S U Sunny. The movie had Chanda, Shahu Modak, Nirmala, Amir Ali, Shakir Ali, A Shah, Zahid Ali etc in it.
Seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the eighth song from “Geet”(1944) to appear in the blog.
This song is sung by Shahu Modak. Lyricist is not known. Music is composed by Naushad.
Only the audio of this song is available. It is clear that the song was picturised on Shahu Modak himself.
This is a Lord Krisha related song and noting down the lyrics of the song requires one to be reasonably familiar with words like “kadamb”, ‘Murali”, “ter” etc. A lyrics of this song is available online where the lyrics noter, clearly handicapped by his ignorance about Lord Krishna as well as hampered by his limited vocabulary has tried to force fit words familiar to him in the lyrics. The result is a highly incorrect lyrics that at best makes no sense and at worst makes the lyrics blasphemous at places. The sad thing is that there are people who may actually use such lyrics and swear by them as well.
There are some places in the lyrics where I have not been able to get a few words correctly. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics whereever applicable.
Song-Aag laga ke bhaag gaye banwaari(Geet)(1944) Singer-Shahu Modak, MD-Naushad
Lyrics
ho o o
aag laga ke bhaag gaye banwaari
ho o
doob gayi man murali ki dhun pyaari
kya din thhe
panghat par kadamb tale mohan ki murli baajti thhi
aur main na
madhur taanon mein khoyi huyi
baar baar ghoonghat sambhaalti
sharmaati hoon
kadamb tale wo khade
kadamb tale wo khade
main panghat pe
baansuri bajaayen aen
baansuri bajaayen
lage ghoonghat pe
o o
mari jaaun main laaj ki maari
ho o
doob gayi man murali ki dhun pyaari
aur kya kehte(?) hain
ki murli ki lay mein dooba hua man
panghat chhodne hi nahin kehta thha
isliye roz bhari gaagar ulat ulat kar
man bharmaaya karti thhi
ab paniya bharan
ghadi ghadi ee
ab paniya bharan
ghadi ghadi
main jaaun re
hey ae ae
ab paniya bharan
bhari gagariya laaun
aur le jaaun re
bhari gagariya laaun
aur le jaaun re
o o
natkhat se neh laga ke haari
o o
aag laga ke bhaag gaye banwaari
gopiyon ki raas leelaa mein bandhe huye mohan
bhool baithhe hain raadha ko
darshanon ki pyaasi aankhen
tumhen dhoondh rahi hain
kyun sudh bisaari mohan
ab reh na sakoon daras bina
ab reh na sakoon daras bina
??
wo ter suna
aake mere murli waale
wo ter suna
aake mere murli waale
ho
jisne mere tan ki sudh bisaari
aag lagaa ke bhaag gaye banwaari
doob gayi man murli ki dhun pyaari

Kindly correct the typo-‘herself’- in 4th para 2nd line as – ‘himself’ please.

Beautiful lyrics.
panghat chhodne hi nahin kehta thha
isliye roz bhari gaagar ulat ulat kar
man bharmaaya karti thhi
Unusual imagery in the context of Radha-Krishna leela.
I get to hear some of (?) marked lyrics as under:
‘panghat par’ kadamb tale…..
‘nazar’ ghoonghat pe
aur kya ‘kehti’ hai
gopiyon ki raas leelaa mein ‘bandhe’ huye mohan
