Searching for songs from as yet unrepresented movies is an important activity for me. As we keep adding more and more movies to the blog, searching for songs from as yet unrepresented movies becomes increasingly difficult, especially for movies from the earlier decades.
Reducing the gaps between movies released in a year and movies represented in the blog is one activity that I monitor regularly.
1953 is the “best” year in that respect. 98 movies were released in that year and as many as 91 of these movies are already represented in the blog. 1961 is the same, when 104 movies were released and 97 of them are already represented in the blog. It is followed by 1955 where 120 movies were released and the blog has songs from 111 of these movies.
The years from the 1940s are not that well represented. The best year in that decade is 1945. 58 out of 74 movies released that year have been covered in the blog. The number of movies released from 1946 onwards became abnormally high (153 in 1946, 181 in 1947, 149 in 1948 and 156 in 1949) and from 1950s onwards sanity was restored again.
1949 is a year of particular interest to many, including us in the blog. It is in this year that the golden era of HFM began and which lasted for the next three decades.
156 movies were released in this year, adding upto some 1359 songs in all. This blog has so far 497 songs from 103 of these movies.
While searching for missing movies of 1949, I came across a song from a movie called “Dhoomketu”(1949). This obscure movie was directed by Homi Wadia for Basant Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Fearless Nadia, John Cawas, Sona Chatterji, Dalpat, Rajni, Shyam Sundar, Boman Shroff, Qamar, Habib, Azeem, Ram Singh, Raja Sandow, Abdullah, Korega, Yadav, Salim etc in it.
The movie has seven songs in it and HFGK is silent about the singers of these songs. When I came across this song from “Dhoomketu”(1949), I was left in no doubt on listening to this song that it was sung by Uma Devi (Tuntun). This sounded like such a special song that I thought that it was a fit song to be covered during her anniversary.
When I checked up, I found that I did not have to wait long. Uma Devi’s (11 july 1923- 24 nov 2003) birth anniversary was on 11 july 2017. So, today on this occasion, here is this forgotten gem from a forgotten Fearless Nadia movie.
Rajjan is the lyricist. music is composed by A Karim.
Only the audio of this song is available. i request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.
For those who wonder what a “dhoomketu” is, it is a sanskrit word for “Comet” and that in fact is the alternative name for the movie. Another related astronomical word in Sanskrit in “Niharika”, which means a galaxy. So the next time you want to make a movie, or want to give an impressive name to a girl child, consider this name. 🙂
With this song, “Dhoomketu”(1949) makes its debut in the blog.
Song-Roye jaa bulbul roye jaa tera naseeba phoot gaya (Dhoomketu)(1949) Singer-Uma Devi, Lyrics-Rajjan, MD-A Karim
Lyrics
roye ja bulbul
roye ja aa aa
tera naseeba phoot gaya aa
tera naseeba phoot gaya
gu’l khile to kaise khile
jab baagh ka maali rooth gaya
tera naseeba phoot gaya aa
tera naseeba phoot gaya
dil ki khushi
honthon ki hansi
pal mein bani aansoo ki jhadi
dil ki khushi
honthon ki hansi
pal mein bani aansu ki jhadi
ek hawa ke jhonke se
sheesha gira aur toot gaya
tera naseeba phoot gaya aa
tera naseeba phoot gaya
chain nahin aaraam nahin
jeene ka armaan nahin
chain nahin aaraam nahin
jeene ka armaan nahin
naaz uthhaane waale ka jab
haath se daaman chhoot gaya
tera naseeba phoot gaya aa
tera naseeba phoot gaya
roye ja bulbul
roye ja
aa aa aa aa
tera naseeba phoot gaya aa
tera naseeba phoot gaya

Thanks for this unknown song of Umadevi, even for me, who boasted to have all her songs. Thanks for breaking my ego ‘churchur’.

Stumbling upon unknown songs whose details are not known often lead to discoveries like this song. This song was the 34th song of Uma Devi in the blog. Can you tell us how many songs did she sing/ how many of her songs you have ?
