Today’s song is from the film ‘Aadmi’ (1957).

Films with the same title were made in 1939, 1957, 1968 and 1993. In addition, there were 7 films made with titles beginning with the word ‘Aadmi’, like ‘Aadmi aur Aurat’ etc.

Today’s film was produced by Kumar Anand, under the banner of Pictures Parade, Bombay. It was directed by one time director Navneet Rai and the music was by Ramnath.

‘Aadmi’ (1957) was a special film because it was the last film of the heroine Begum Para, who retired from films after this. However, after a hiatus of 50 years, she again acted in the film ‘Saanwaria’ (2007), at the age of 81 years. (In the same film actress Zohra Sehgal had also acted, at the age of 95 years !).

Today’s film was also a special film because the hero – Nasir Khan and the heroine – Begum Para were actually husband and wife in real life. The had acted together in 2 other films – ‘Lutera’ (1955) and ‘Kar Bhala’ (1956). This was not an unique or a solitary case. Some other actor couples also made films together in Hindi films. Some examples are….

One of the oldest couples was actor Gul Hamid and Patience Cooper (Sabira Begum after conversion). They acted together in 3 films – ‘Murderer’ (1935), ‘Khyber Pass’ (1936), and ‘Baghi Sipahi’ (1936).

Shammi Kapoor- Geeta Bali acted together in 5 films – ‘Miss Coca Cola’ (1955) – they got married between the film making period, ‘Rangeen Raten’ (1956),’Coffee House’ (1957), ‘Mujrim’ (1958) and ‘Mohur’ (1959). By coincidence, after marriage, they acted together in films every year for 5 consecutive years,.

Dev Anand – Kalpana Kartik acted together in 3 films -‘Taxi Driver’ (1954) (They got married in between the shootings),’House No. 44′ (1955) and ‘Nau do Gyarah’ (1957).

Premnath – Bina Rai did maximum films together-6. ‘Aurat’ (1953), (they got married midway), ‘Shagufa’ (1954), ‘Prisoner of Golkonda’ (1954), ‘Hamara Watan’ (1956), ‘Samundar’ (1957) and ‘Changez Khan’ (1957).

‘Aadmi’ (1957) had 8 songs written by Sartaj Rahmani. He wrote 44 songs in 12 films, starting with ‘Baghdad ka Chor’ (1955) to his last film ‘Tarzan and Gorilla’ (1963). Most of his films were C grade action films.

The cast of the film was Nasir Khan, Begum Para, Kamran, Uma Dutt, Heera Sawant, Kammo and others. There were 3 comedians, as Guest artistes -Bhudo Advani, Shaikh and Yaqub.

Kamran Khan Rizvi was a regular stunt hero and I used to enjoy his films. He started his film career with ‘Baghi Sipahi’ (1936), a film made by East India Film Co, Calcutta. AR Kardar was its director. Later on Kamran came to Bombay, along with Kardar, who was his patron for quite some time.

Hero Kamran and heroine Nazi was a popular combination of 12 stunt films those days. Kamran worked in 52 films.

In 1963, film ‘Bachpan’ was being directed by Nazir Ahmed. He had some disputes with the producer and he left the film midway. The debutant hero Salim (father of actor Salman Khan) and debutant heroine Menaka (eldest sister of Daisy and Honey Irani…all daughters of Mrs. PN Irani, a greedy mother, who spoiled the childhood of her children for money) were in trouble. Kamran stepped in and completed the film by directing the balance part, without taking any money. During this period, he fell in love with Menaka and they got married. Her film career ended there only. They had one son and one daughter (actor, compere, director Sajid Khan and famous choreographer and director Farah khan).

Kamran stopped getting hero’s roles, as stunt films were not being made to that extent in the 70s and later period. He decided to become producer and director. This proved to be his nemesis. He failed miserably, lost everything and became an alcoholic. He divorced Menaka, who worked as a housekeeper in a 5 star hotel (Hotel Sea Rock) and he lived in his big flat in Versova with 2 children but without money. He died in 1985.

Kamran directed 11 films from ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965) to ‘Ban Manush’ (1980). His last film as an actor was ‘Nastik’ (1983).

The hero, Nasir Khan, in my opinion, had no histrionic talents but got films as he was Dilip Kumar’s brother.

After partition, he migrated to Pakistan but had to leave Pakistan like a fugitive to save his life, due to his activities there. Here is his short bio…..

Dilip Kumar’s younger brother Nasir Khan (born on 1-10- 1924) will always be remembered as the leading man of Pakistan’s maiden production ‘Teri Yaad’ (1948). Nasir Khan started his career in 1945 with Filmistan’s ‘Mazdoor’. His next film ‘Shehnai’ (1947) opposite Rehana was a hit and is still remembered for C Ramchandra’s songs especially “Maar Katari Mar Jaana” (sung by Amirbai Karnataki) and “Aana Meri Jaan Meri Jaan Sunday Ke Sunday” (sung by C Ramchandra, Shamshad Begum and Meena Kapoor).

He shifted to Lahore at the time of partition and appeared in two Pakistani films i.e. ‘Teri Yaad’ (1948) and ‘Shahida’ (1949). ‘Teri Yaad’ with Asha Posley was Pakistan’s first released film. It flopped because it was lacking in production quality and that along with Jinnah’s death soon after contributed to its failure.

Deewan Sardari Lal’s ‘Shahida’, Nasir Khan’s second Pakistani film in which he starred with Shamim, (best remembered for her role in Kishore Sahu’s family drama ‘Sindoor ‘ (1947)) also failed to click. Disheartened, Nasir found it hard to support himself and sought help from his brother Yusuf Khan, alias Dilip Kumar, the emerging matinee idol of Indian cinema. Under the banner of Best Pictures, Nasir Khan distributed four films from Bombay to Pakistan, including ‘Mela’, a Nargis-Dilip blockbuster by filmmaker SU Sunny, featuring some of Naushad’s most enchanting musical compositions.

Overwhelmed by his sudden wealth Nasir then became involved in a love affair with a girl belonging to a feudal Punjabi family. As a result of this imbroglio he had to leave the country overnight (in view of a threat to his life), that too stealthily with whatever clothes he had on his body. He returned to Bombay, but not before having his name recorded in the history of Pakistani cinema as the hero of its maiden film.

After returning to India, Nasir resumed his career in 1951 and appeared in 6 Hindi films including ‘Khazana’, ‘Nagina’, ‘Nakhare’, ‘Nazneen’, ‘Phoolon Ke Haar’ and ‘Saudagar’. Of these special mention must be made of ‘Nagina’, a mystery-thriller where he appeared opposite Nutan. ‘Nagina’ was issued an adults only certificate and is still remembered for its haunting melodies sung by CH Atma and Lata Mangeshkar.

Later, Nasir Khan appeared with many top Indian heroines including Suraiya (‘Lal Kunwar’), Nargis (‘Angarey’), Meena Kumari (‘Daera’) and made somewhat successful team with Nutan (‘Nagina’, ‘Aagosh’ and ‘Shisham’), but he never achieved the success his brother Dilip Kumar did because of his limited acting abilities and wooden expressions.

He married the sensual Indian beauty and his co-star in 3 films i.e. Begum Para. Nasir Khan’s most memorable film was perhaps the hugely successful ‘Ganga Jamuna’ (1961) where he was cast opposite his own brother Dilip Kumar. The film was a story of two brothers on opposite sides of the law, Ganga (Dilip Kumar) and Jamuna (Nasir Khan). Nasir Khan acted in 30 films. His first film was ‘Mazdoor’ (1945) and the last film was ‘Bairaag’ (1976).

When films stopped coming to him, he shifted to Deolali, near Nashik and started farming and poultry also, but failed miserably.

According to his wife Begum Para, Nasir developed this physical condition, where he began to lose all his hair and eyebrows prematurely. He really lost out on his career because of that. During the making of ‘Ganga Jamuna’, he wore a wig and got away with it. So he concentrated all his efforts on making films.

He died on 3rd May, 1974. His last film ‘Bairaag’ (1976) was released after his death.

The story of this film was…..

This is a story of an young man – Shyam. He is very noble and helpful, but despite all good qualities, he is despised by all because of his unusually long nose. Shyam loves Radha, but Radha loves Ram – a handsome young man with a good heart but he is rustic like a villager.

Radha loves Ram, but she also loves Shyam’s poetry and his nature. So, Shyam is requested to teach good manners, poetry and the art of speech to Ram. He does a good job, for his love of Radha and in few months Ram becomes sophisticated .

Before Ram and Radha get married, the King’s general Lal Bahadur sees Radha and asks her parents to get her married to him. Now there is a big problem. In this situation Ram backs out, but Shyam comes forward. He approaches the king and appeals that there should be a competition between him and the general on poetry. Whosoever wins will marry Radha. One day before the competition Shyam is attacked by assailants. Thinking that he is dead, they run away. Shyam regains his senses. Next day, he reaches the court and also wins the competition. Shyam and Radha get married.

Today’s song is a duet sung by S Balbir and Sudha Malhotra. Enjoy…..

koi chaal na chalne doongi balam
teree daal na galne doongi
koi chaal na chalne doongi balam
teree daal na galne doongi
ye jaan lo tum pehchaan lo tum
ye jaan lo tum pehchaan lo tum

teri zulf mein dil jab se atka

tujhe kangan banaa kar doongaa
nayi baaliyaan laa kar doongaa
main jeb ko dheeli kar doongaa
tujhe soney mein peeli kar doongaa
main jeb ko dheeli kar doongaa
tujhe soney mein peeli kar doongaa
chaahe laakh ka ghar ho khaak suno
chaahe laakh ka ghar ho khaak mujhe
