Blog Day :

5756 Post No. : 18280

Today’s song is from the social film Sunehre Qadam-1966.

It was a social film directed by Satish Nigam and Music Directors were Bulo C Rani and S. Mohinder. There were 4 Lyricists for the 7+1(2 part) songs. The cast of the film was Rehman, Shashikala, Agha, Sabita Chatterjee, Randhir etc.

Majority of the cinegoers these days prefer a ‘Happy End’ film. There was a period-mid 40’s to mid 50’s- when Tragedy films were the ‘in’ thing, but as the younger generation grew up, ‘Devdas’ type films became a ‘No-No’. Musicals and Romantic comedies took over. Dilip Kumar who was the cause of such ‘ Tragedy wave’ films, suffered healthwise and stopped acting in such films. ( He had ‘Died’ in 7 such Tragedy films during this period.). Like a pendulum, he went to the other side, doing comic roles and films of other Genres. Big producer-directors like V.Shantaram hated films where the hero ‘died’ in the end and had made films like ” Aadmi”-1937, with a message “Life is for living”.

The other day, I was searching on Google to get an answer to my curious question ” Why does a man want a ‘Happy End’ to all matters in life ?” After searching for a long time for a few days, I came across a Research paper titled ” Human mind and the desire for a Happy End’. As per this scientist, the Human mind basically wants peace and joy so that he performs well in life, without wasting time on solution-less matters which have a ‘Tragic End’.

Applying this to film viewing, people seek entertainment and happy times when they go to see a film. From the mid 50’s onwards the trend fully changed to stress on Music, Humour and Happy End. Personally, I like only ‘Happy End’ films. I am sure most people are in my category.

The story of film Sunehre Qadam-1966 was a mixture of attempts to satisfy both types of people – people who liked tragedies and people who liked ‘Happy end’. in this effort, the whole story became patchy and meaningless. take a look at the film’s story….

This is a story of a spoiled motherless rich girl who is also a singer. Shekhar (Rehman) falls in love with Shefali (Shashikala). In their first meeting, Shefali slaps Shekhar, who still loves her. There is a singing competition which is won by Shekhar defeating Shefali. Shekhar wins the Trophy.

Shekhar’s poor parents and brother and sister live in a village. Sheklhar’s earning is limited. To cope up, he has to sell the Trophy. Shefali knows that Shekhar would never ask for money from anyone, so she buys the trophy from the dealer and gifts it to Shekhar. After a few months, he sold it again. Shefali gets it again and gives it to him. Third time there is some misunderstanding in the shop and the shop owner accuses Shefali of stealing the trophy from him. Sheklhar thinks she stole it and accepts the theft himself and goes to jail.

Shefali wants to redeem her foolish behaviour , so she goes to his village to take care of his parents. The father dies soon and the mother too dies. Meanwhile Shekhar comes back from jail. Seeing Shefali at his house, he is angry and fires her and throws her out, without listening to her pleas.

Shefali decides to end her life, after thinking for few days. Meanwhile the shopkeeper meets Shekhar and clears the fact that the Trophy was bought by Shefali 3 times and not stolen. His neighbours also tell Shekhar how Shefali looked after his parents and siblings. Shekhar repents and goes to her. He learns that she has gone to the river. When he reaches the river, he sees Shefali jumping into the river to die. He too jumps and saves her. All matters are cleared and both unite happily.

I don’t know what you think of this story, but I feel it is a third rate story. Neither story nor music was noteworthy. The only redeeming factor was the excellent acting by Shashikala and Rehman. I liked Rehman. He looked like a Royal person and was very impressive. Sai’d Rehman Khan was born on 23 June 1921 at Lahore, British India, now Pakistan, in a Pashtun-origin family. He graduated from Robertson College, Jabalpur, staying in Beohar Niwas Palace. Among his nephews are prominent Pakistani film and TV actor Faisal Rehman and Fasih Ur Rehman, Indian classical dancer, and sons of his younger brother Massud-ur-Rehman, the famous cinematographer in Pakistan.

After college (1942), he joined the Royal Indian Air Force and trained at Poona as a pilot. The Air Force didn’t appeal to him and soon left for a career in films at Bombay. He is best known for his suave sophisticated roles, which suited his personality. His movie career started with a job as third assistant director to Vishram Bedekar at the studios in Pune. Vishram needed an Afghan who could tie a Pashtun turban on one of his characters. Rehman could do that, being a Pashtun, and that brought him to the screen for some lead roles. One of his major hits as hero was Pyar Ki Jeet with Suraiya, and the song-“Ek Dil Ke Tukde Hazar Hue, Koi Yahan Gira, “Koi Wahan Gira ” was a major hit. Badi Behen was another big hit with Suraiya. He was also interested in marrying Suraiya, along with many other suitors, though she was adamant in wanting to marry Dev Anand.
Initially he played lead roles, but as time passed, he accepted supporting roles and made his mark in some hit films like Pyaasa, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (in which he played a debauched zamindar, Chhote Sarkar), and Waqt which were some of his memorable roles, the first two with Guru Dutt, famous actor, producer, director. Rehman also did key roles in Baharon Ki Manzil, Gomti Ke Kinare, Dushman and Holi Aayi Re. Rehman received four Filmfare nominations as Best Supporting Actor for Phir Subah Hogi (1958), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966).

Rehman had a deep, impressive and powerful voice and it is a great irony that he died of throat cancer, It can easily be said that his colourful role as Chenoy Seth in B.R.Chopra’s 1965 film Waqt was one of his best loved performances. Despite his evil designs for Raaj Kumar in the film, audiences admired his style and prosperous look. He proved the perfect match for” Jaani” Raaj Kumar. The scenes between the two, especially at the swimming pool, are among the highlights of the first multi-starrer of our film industry. Word for word, expression for expression, Rehman stood his own opposite Raaj Kumar who was known for his unique voice, style and dialogue delivery. In fact, Rehman seemed more in control than “Jaani”. How smoothly and politely an evil man can accomplish his goals is what Chenoy Seth shows us in Waqt. Indeed, a memorable performance!

Rehman’s first film was Hum Ek Hain-1946 and in 1982 his last 3 films were released-Dil aakhir dil hain, Rajput and Vakil Babu. In all Rehman acted in 113 films and lip synched just 17 songs on the screen, in his career.

Not much is known about Rehman’s personal life except that he lived behind Regal Cinema in Colaba area of Bombay and was extremely devoted to his wife. Director Lekh Tandon informs that the tough Rehman married his girlfriend who looked after him when he fell upon lean times during the 1950s. But as she kept him and his confidence afloat, Rehman was perpetually grateful to her for her supreme sacrifice and the devoted couple lived a reclusive life with Guru Dutt, Johnny Walker and Abrar Alvi amongst their few friends from the industry. Perhaps this seclusion from the moviedom’s social circuit explains the near absence of any stories about him or his family. Nevertheless, like Lekh Tandon opines, “he was a rare breed of actor who brought his own sheen and sophistication to a character”, discerning audiences know he was an actor who was worth his weight in gold. Like a rare melody that is little remembered but never forgotten by our heart, Rehman twinkles in our memory.

In 1977, he suffered three heart attacks due to excessive alcohol consumption . He was also a chain smoker and he was diagnosed with throat cancer. A man whose majestic voice was his signature, lost his voice and he was unable to speak during his last days in his life. Rehman died on 5-11-1984.

Sunehre Qadam-1966 was the last film of Bulo C Rani. Despite the popularity of a stray song such as ‘Hamen to loot liya milke husn Walon ne’ (Ismail Azad/’Al Hilal’/1958). Bulo C Rani just continued to drift because his music had not remained a viable commercial proposition. After ‘Sunhare Qadam’ (1966). Bulo’s career came to an end. Having once enjoyed the position of prominence the lack of assignment made him restless. No films came to him. In addition, his family sold his posh flat in Shivaji Park and shifted to Versova, which hurt him a lot. He lost the will to live.

In a career spanning over 22 years, Bulo C Rani gave music in 71 films. He also gave music in few Sindhi hit films. Practically with no work towards the latter half, he started taking coaching classes in light music. He was isolated which led to depression. To overcome this he developed the habit of drinking. This led his health to deteriorate and he had to be admitted to hospitals multiple times. When acute depression became unbearable & after his family sold their house at Shivaji Park and moved to Versova, he took the extreme step and committed suicide by burning himself on May 24, 1993. He died at 73 leaving behind some unforgettable creations. Bulo C Rani’s death remained largely unreported in the press. It was an irony of fate that the song he composed in the voice of Lata in his last film ‘Sunhare Qadam’ was ‘Maangne se jo maut mil jaati, Kaun jeeta zamane men’.

The Irony was that in life he asked for death and he got it. And how horribly too ! It is said that on 24-5-1993, he committed suicide by immolating himself. When his body was burning, he ran on the streets shouting in pain and finally fell on the road dead.

Today’s song is the last and final song of this film , making it YIPPEED, with all songs covered.

5490 Post No. : 17925

Today’s song is from the film ‘Aadmi’ (1957).

Films with the same title were made in 1939, 1957, 1968 and 1993. In addition, there were 7 films made with titles beginning with the word ‘Aadmi’, like ‘Aadmi aur Aurat’ etc.

Today’s film was produced by Kumar Anand, under the banner of Pictures Parade, Bombay. It was directed by one time director Navneet Rai and the music was by Ramnath.

‘Aadmi’ (1957) was a special film because it was the last film of the heroine Begum Para, who retired from films after this. However, after a hiatus of 50 years, she again acted in the film ‘Saanwaria’ (2007), at the age of 81 years. (In the same film actress Zohra Sehgal had also acted, at the age of 95 years !).

Today’s film was also a special film because the hero – Nasir Khan and the heroine – Begum Para were actually husband and wife in real life. The had acted together in 2 other films – ‘Lutera’ (1955) and ‘Kar Bhala’ (1956). This was not an unique or a solitary case. Some other actor couples also made films together in Hindi films. Some examples are….

One of the oldest couples was actor Gul Hamid and Patience Cooper (Sabira Begum after conversion). They acted together in 3 films – ‘Murderer’ (1935), ‘Khyber Pass’ (1936), and ‘Baghi Sipahi’ (1936).

Shammi Kapoor- Geeta Bali acted together in 5 films – ‘Miss Coca Cola’ (1955) – they got married between the film making period, ‘Rangeen Raten’ (1956),’Coffee House’ (1957), ‘Mujrim’ (1958) and ‘Mohur’ (1959). By coincidence, after marriage, they acted together in films every year for 5 consecutive years,.

Dev Anand – Kalpana Kartik acted together in 3 films -‘Taxi Driver’ (1954) (They got married in between the shootings),’House No. 44′ (1955) and ‘Nau do Gyarah’ (1957).

Premnath – Bina Rai did maximum films together-6. ‘Aurat’ (1953), (they got married midway), ‘Shagufa’ (1954), ‘Prisoner of Golkonda’ (1954), ‘Hamara Watan’ (1956), ‘Samundar’ (1957) and ‘Changez Khan’ (1957).

‘Aadmi’ (1957) had 8 songs written by Sartaj Rahmani. He wrote 44 songs in 12 films, starting with ‘Baghdad ka Chor’ (1955) to his last film ‘Tarzan and Gorilla’ (1963). Most of his films were C grade action films.

The cast of the film was Nasir Khan, Begum Para, Kamran, Uma Dutt, Heera Sawant, Kammo and others. There were 3 comedians, as Guest artistes -Bhudo Advani, Shaikh and Yaqub.

Kamran Khan Rizvi was a regular stunt hero and I used to enjoy his films. He started his film career with ‘Baghi Sipahi’ (1936), a film made by East India Film Co, Calcutta. AR Kardar was its director. Later on Kamran came to Bombay, along with Kardar, who was his patron for quite some time.

Hero Kamran and heroine Nazi was a popular combination of 12 stunt films those days. Kamran worked in 52 films.

In 1963, film ‘Bachpan’ was being directed by Nazir Ahmed. He had some disputes with the producer and he left the film midway. The debutant hero Salim (father of actor Salman Khan) and debutant heroine Menaka (eldest sister of Daisy and Honey Irani…all daughters of Mrs. PN Irani, a greedy mother, who spoiled the childhood of her children for money) were in trouble. Kamran stepped in and completed the film by directing the balance part, without taking any money. During this period, he fell in love with Menaka and they got married. Her film career ended there only. They had one son and one daughter (actor, compere, director Sajid Khan and famous choreographer and director Farah khan).

Kamran stopped getting hero’s roles, as stunt films were not being made to that extent in the 70s and later period. He decided to become producer and director. This proved to be his nemesis. He failed miserably, lost everything and became an alcoholic. He divorced Menaka, who worked as a housekeeper in a 5 star hotel (Hotel Sea Rock) and he lived in his big flat in Versova with 2 children but without money. He died in 1985.

Kamran directed 11 films from ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965) to ‘Ban Manush’ (1980). His last film as an actor was ‘Nastik’ (1983).

The hero, Nasir Khan, in my opinion, had no histrionic talents but got films as he was Dilip Kumar’s brother.

After partition, he migrated to Pakistan but had to leave Pakistan like a fugitive to save his life, due to his activities there. Here is his short bio…..

Dilip Kumar’s younger brother Nasir Khan (born on 1-10- 1924) will always be remembered as the leading man of Pakistan’s maiden production ‘Teri Yaad’ (1948). Nasir Khan started his career in 1945 with Filmistan’s ‘Mazdoor’. His next film ‘Shehnai’ (1947) opposite Rehana was a hit and is still remembered for C Ramchandra’s songs especially “Maar Katari Mar Jaana” (sung by Amirbai Karnataki) and “Aana Meri Jaan Meri Jaan Sunday Ke Sunday” (sung by C Ramchandra, Shamshad Begum and Meena Kapoor).

He shifted to Lahore at the time of partition and appeared in two Pakistani films i.e. ‘Teri Yaad’ (1948) and ‘Shahida’ (1949). ‘Teri Yaad’ with Asha Posley was Pakistan’s first released film. It flopped because it was lacking in production quality and that along with Jinnah’s death soon after contributed to its failure.

Deewan Sardari Lal’s ‘Shahida’, Nasir Khan’s second Pakistani film in which he starred with Shamim, (best remembered for her role in Kishore Sahu’s family drama ‘Sindoor ‘ (1947)) also failed to click. Disheartened, Nasir found it hard to support himself and sought help from his brother Yusuf Khan, alias Dilip Kumar, the emerging matinee idol of Indian cinema. Under the banner of Best Pictures, Nasir Khan distributed four films from Bombay to Pakistan, including ‘Mela’, a Nargis-Dilip blockbuster by filmmaker SU Sunny, featuring some of Naushad’s most enchanting musical compositions.

Overwhelmed by his sudden wealth Nasir then became involved in a love affair with a girl belonging to a feudal Punjabi family. As a result of this imbroglio he had to leave the country overnight (in view of a threat to his life), that too stealthily with whatever clothes he had on his body. He returned to Bombay, but not before having his name recorded in the history of Pakistani cinema as the hero of its maiden film.

After returning to India, Nasir resumed his career in 1951 and appeared in 6 Hindi films including ‘Khazana’, ‘Nagina’, ‘Nakhare’, ‘Nazneen’, ‘Phoolon Ke Haar’ and ‘Saudagar’. Of these special mention must be made of ‘Nagina’, a mystery-thriller where he appeared opposite Nutan. ‘Nagina’ was issued an adults only certificate and is still remembered for its haunting melodies sung by CH Atma and Lata Mangeshkar.

Later, Nasir Khan appeared with many top Indian heroines including Suraiya (‘Lal Kunwar’), Nargis (‘Angarey’), Meena Kumari (‘Daera’) and made somewhat successful team with Nutan (‘Nagina’, ‘Aagosh’ and ‘Shisham’), but he never achieved the success his brother Dilip Kumar did because of his limited acting abilities and wooden expressions.

He married the sensual Indian beauty and his co-star in 3 films i.e. Begum Para. Nasir Khan’s most memorable film was perhaps the hugely successful ‘Ganga Jamuna’ (1961) where he was cast opposite his own brother Dilip Kumar. The film was a story of two brothers on opposite sides of the law, Ganga (Dilip Kumar) and Jamuna (Nasir Khan). Nasir Khan acted in 30 films. His first film was ‘Mazdoor’ (1945) and the last film was ‘Bairaag’ (1976).

When films stopped coming to him, he shifted to Deolali, near Nashik and started farming and poultry also, but failed miserably.

According to his wife Begum Para, Nasir developed this physical condition, where he began to lose all his hair and eyebrows prematurely. He really lost out on his career because of that. During the making of ‘Ganga Jamuna’, he wore a wig and got away with it. So he concentrated all his efforts on making films.

He died on 3rd May, 1974. His last film ‘Bairaag’ (1976) was released after his death.

The story of this film was…..

This is a story of an young man – Shyam. He is very noble and helpful, but despite all good qualities, he is despised by all because of his unusually long nose. Shyam loves Radha, but Radha loves Ram – a handsome young man with a good heart but he is rustic like a villager.

Radha loves Ram, but she also loves Shyam’s poetry and his nature. So, Shyam is requested to teach good manners, poetry and the art of speech to Ram. He does a good job, for his love of Radha and in few months Ram becomes sophisticated .

Before Ram and Radha get married, the King’s general Lal Bahadur sees Radha and asks her parents to get her married to him. Now there is a big problem. In this situation Ram backs out, but Shyam comes forward. He approaches the king and appeals that there should be a competition between him and the general on poetry. Whosoever wins will marry Radha. One day before the competition Shyam is attacked by assailants. Thinking that he is dead, they run away. Shyam regains his senses. Next day, he reaches the court and also wins the competition. Shyam and Radha get married.

Today’s song is a duet sung by S Balbir and Sudha Malhotra. Enjoy…..

“Dekhi Teri Bombay”(1961) is one of the BTYC eligible movies today.

“Dekhi Teri Bombay”(1961) was produced by Kailash Bhandari for Sheetal Movies, Bombay. The movie had Purnima, Daljit, Shammi, Shaikh, Radhika, Jagdish Kamal,
Prakash Kaur, Ramlal, Tilak Raj, Kothana, Haider, Raju etc. The movie also introduced Anand,Master Shashi and Aruna Kumari.

“Dekhi Teri Bombay”(1961) had seven songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the blog so far.

Here is the fifth song from the movie to appear in the blog. HFGK is silent about the singers of this song. Prakashchandra, who sent the lyrics of this song guesses that S Balbir and Sudha Malhotra are the singers. I agree with his identification.

Aziz Kashmiri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vinod.

The song is picturised on Shammi and Shaikh.

#Debutant movie-Zaalim Teraa Jawaab Nahin-1960 #
——————————————————————

In this post we launch a movie from the year ‘1960’ on the blog. This movie is titled as ‘Zaalim Teraa Jawaab Nahin’.

This movie seems to be an obscure movie of its time and also I guess that the songs of this movie were not available on internet earlier. The couple of songs from this movie I came across have been uploaded only recently. I would like to thank the up-loader for providing the songs of this movie on ‘YouTube’.

“Zaalim Teraa Jawaab Nahin-1960” was directed by Ramanlal Desai for ‘R.D. Productions’. It was produced by G. C. Trivedi. This movie had Chitra, Azad, Agha, Vasantrao Pahalwan, Nazar, Saroj, Ramlal, Shyam Lal and others.

As per information about this movie provided in HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960), this movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.07.1960. So that is almost sixty-three years ago 🙂

“Zaalim Teraa Jawaab Nahin-1960” has seven songs in it which were composed to by S.D. Batish.
Three lyricist viz. Aziz Siddiqui (one song), Fareed Tonki (three songs) and Shadab (three songs) shared the writing of these seven songs for this movie.

SNo Song Title Lyricist Singer/s
01 Jab usko dekha… uthha ye shor ki zaalim tera jawaab nahin Shadab Sudha Malhotra, chorus
02 Suno ji mohe dar laage chalo haule haule Fareed Tonki Sudha Malhotra
03 Mere dildaar wai wai, hai tumse pyaar wai wai Aziz Siddiqui Not known

05 Apne man ka raaja hoon main naam hain mera agha Shadab Not known
06 Aaj mere yaar ki tedhhi tedhhi chaal hai Shadab Not known
07 Maalik tere bandon ne kyon aisi khataa ki hai Fareed Tonki S.D. Batish

(It can be seen from the above table that the singer’s names for three songs have not been provided with the details in HFGK or they are not known as of now.)

Today we listen to a song sung by Sudha Malhotra and S.D. Batish from this movie. This is a ‘nok-jhonk’ type song.

Lyrics are by Fareed Tonki and music is composed by S.D. Batish.

Let us now enjoy this song and welcome this movie ‘Zaalim Teraa Jawaab Nahin-1960’ on the blog…

Only audio of the song is available.

The song presented in this post is from the movie ‘Kaala Chashmaa-1962’.

This movie made its debut on the blog on 18.12.2015. The second song from this movie was posted on the blog on 27.05.2017. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog. This song is coming after a long gap of about six years from the time its last song figured in the blog.

Before going into the details of today’s song here is a brief about this movie.

I guess that this movie is an obscure and lesser known movie of its time and no video of this movie seems to be available on the internet.

In this post we are going to listen to a song from the ‘1957’ movie ‘Aadmi’.

Films with the same title “Aadmi” have been released in 1939, 1957, 1968 and 1993. Out of these, films released in ‘1939’, ‘1957’ and ‘1968’ are already represented on the blog. One of them, viz ‘Aadmi-1968’ is YIPPEED on the blog.

‘Aadmi-1957’ was directed by Navneet Rai for ‘Picutres Parade’ presentation. It was produced by Kumar Anand.

It had Nasir Khan, Begum Para, Kamran, Nirmal Kumar, Patanjali, Uma Dutt, Kammo, Arvind Kumar, Heera Sawant, Prem Sagar, Nalini and Kamal Mehra.

HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960) mentioned in the foot-note for this movie page that this movie ‘Aadmi-1957’ was the last film of actress Begum Para.

“Aadmi-1957” has eight songs in it.
Music of this film was composed by Ramnath, while lyrics for all its’ eight songs were penned by Sartaj Rahmani.

I am unable to identify the actresses shown in the video of this song available on the internet (I sincerely hope that this video is authentic and from this movie only).

Today’s song is a nice song which the lady seems to be singing for her ‘sakhi-saheli’ , where I guess, the marriage of her ‘sakhi-saheli’ with her beloved seems to be on the card 🙂

Let us now listen to the song …

This Week, That Year – 11
———————————–
10Jul – 16Jul, 2012

Wow wo
Those were the days, I am sure Atul ji would be remembering with relish. Or may be, he may himself not be believing the pace that was the norm in those days, This week, 10 years ago saw a whopping 46 songs posted. That works out to be an average of a tad over 6.5 songs per day. Ah yes, those were days.

And talking about ‘those were the days. . .’, I came across this very interesting exchange in the comment section of the first song of that week. The post was number 6206, the first one to be posted on the 1453rd day of the blog. The featured song is “Na Wo Hamse Judaa Honge” from the 1949 film ‘Dulaari’. A reader, identifying himself as simply MZ, posted this comment.

My first comment on this site.

You would be lucky to get 10 good songs in a year these days but in the forties and fifties, you could get 10 good songs in a movie such as this one. Just think of Naushad’s movies like Rattan, Anmol Ghadi, Andaz, Babul, Dulari, Uran Khatola, Deedar, Dastaan, Baiju Bawra, Shabab etc and it is staggering how he could come with so many gems in one movie.

Also going through your site, I see that in 1949 the following all time great musicals released – Shair, Paras, Namoona, Dulari, Mahal, Barsaat, Andaz, Bazaar, Lahore ,Badi Bahen, Dillagi, Chandini Raat, Shabnam, Patanga, Ek thi Ladki, Zevrat, Chakori, Jal Tarang, Raat ki raani, Laadli.

How I envy those who lived during those times !!!

To this, Atul ji had responded,

Those were different days indeed.

Ah yes, surely, indeed those were different days. 46 songs in a single week. . .

I return to the numbers game and the review of the postings from that week. The following table contains the day by day information of the posts from that week.

In these 46 posts, three films were repeated. Two films are from 1949 – ‘Chaandni Chowk’, two songs, and ‘Dulaari’, three songs. The third movie repeated that week is the 1976 film ‘Laila Majnu’, two songs, This works out to be 42 different films that got showcased that week.

The distribution by decade preference is as follows,

1930s  –  1
1940s  –  9
1950s  –  15
1960s  –  13
1970s  –  6
1980s+ –  2

As always, the distribution is obviously weighed down in the decades of 50s and 60s.

That week, fifteen films had made their debut, and one film – ‘Dulaari’ from 1949 was Yippeee’d. Ah well, three songs of that film during the week.

Of the 42 films that were featured that week, 21 films have since been Yippeee’d. Of the remaining 21 films that are still pending, the film ‘Taatar Ka Chor’ from 1955 is waiting for one last song, but that one appears to be untraceable. So this film is tagged as Yc – conditionally Yippeee’d.

A major milestone reached that week was the 400th guest post by yours truly. The post for the song “Main Hoon Atom Bomb” from the 1960 film ‘Dr Shaitaan’, published on 10th July that year, was my 400th post on the blog.

Today I present one more song of the unreleased film ‘Salaam e Mohabbat’ from the 1950s. This film had made its debut 10 years ago on 10th of July. The song posted was the iconic Talat Mehmood rendition of “Main Tujhko Agar Ik Phool Kahoon”. The song coming on board today is another enchanting melody by the music director duo Bipin Babul. The words are from the pen of Anjum Jaipuri and the singing voice is Sudha Malhotra.

As I was searching for the song to go along with with this post, I came across this wonderful song. It has been sitting in my collection all the while but I am hearing it for the first time today.

Yes, those were the days. Those were the days that not only the top rung music directors produced great songs in their films, even the lesser known and lesser heard music directors like Bipin Babul came up with enchanting melodies. Melodies that were lost to the listening public – unreleased films and released but unsuccessful films otherwise.

Those certainly were the days. And it is for this reason that period is called the Golden Age of the Hindi film song – melody was surely ruling the minds of the creators of songs of that era.

Listen to this song, and wonder. . .

kisi masoom ki taqdeer na ban jaaye kahin
aaa aaaa aaaaa
aaj har cheez fasaana hai
khuda..aa khair kare
khuda khair kare
husn ko teer chalaana hai
khuda..aa khair kare
khuda khair kare
kiska dil aaj nishaana hai
khuda..aa khair kare
khuda khair kare

आ आss आsss आsss आs
दिल के मचले हुये अरमान नज़र आते हैं
आज हर मौज में तूफान नज़र आते हैं
आ आss आsss

आ आss आsss आsss आs
अब तो उठती नहीं आँखों से ये पलकों की नकाब
मुस्कुराने लगे तन्हाई में होठों के गुलाब
आ आss आsss

आ आss आsss आsss आs
ज़ुल्फ बिखरी हुई ज़ंजीर ना बन जाये कहीं
किसी मासूम की तक़दीर ना बन जाये कहीं
आ आss आsss

Song-Aji maana ke bahut hain aap haseen (Anarbala) (1961) Singers-S Balbir, Sudha Malhotra, Lyrics-Ramesh Chandra Pandey, MD-Bulo C Rani
Female Chorus

Lyrics

aa aa aa
maana
aji mana ke bahut hain aap haseen
dil ko thukraaya karte hain
lekin ham bhi dilwaale,
dil dushman se lagaaya karte hain
hamse hi kadar aapki hai
ho hamse hi aap bigadte hain
kya apne aap ko samjha hai
kyun itana aap akadte hain jee akadte hain
haan aan aan
sun lijiye aeji sarkar, sun lijiye aeji sarkar
agar kuchh aap hain to, agar kuchh aap hain to
kuchh ham bhi hain
sun leeje aeji dildaar
sun leeje aeji dildaar
agar kuchh aap hain to, agar kuchh aap hain to
kuchh ham bhi hain/font>

maana husn pe marne ko, laakhon dildaar machalte hain
lekin kab shama bulaati hai
jalne waale khud jalte hain

ye jalte hain
ye jalte hain

un parwaanon ki hasti kya,
jeene pe jinko naaj nahin
aa aa aaa
ham bhi to mohabbat karte hain
haan
par maut ke hain mohtaaj nahin een een
ho par maut ke hain mohtaaj nahin

sun leeje aeji sarkaar
sun leeje aeji sarkaar
agar kuchh aap hain to
kuchh ham bhi hain

aa aa aa aa
hai shokhi bhi itni ki,
aap khud ko bhagwaan samajh baithe
hai khair hamarre dil ko hi
aap apna makaan samajh baithhe
aabaad ho ya barbaad ho o o
ab ye jaan bhi aapki dualat hai
maashook hai gar bhagwan to
apne aashiq ki badaulat hai
sun leeje aeji dildaar
sun leeje aeji dildaar

agar kuchh aap hain to, agar kuchh aap hain to
kuchh ham bhi hain

Hullo Atuldom

The song with this post is from “Zameen Ke Taare” (1960) not to be confused with the modern day “Taare Zameen Par” (2007). Both the movies had children as center of the movies. But that is where the similarities end.

“Zameen Ke Taare” had a cast of Daisy Irani, Honey Irani, Motilal, Achala Sachdev, Prem Kumar, Kiran Kumari, Anwar Hussain, Kumud Tripathi, Tun Tun, etc. I think Mumtaz and Jayshree T. too were in the movie as child actors. It was directed by Chandulal Shah and produced by Navinchandra Shah for Chandra Movies. It had music by S. Mohinder and songs were written by Tanveer Naqvi, Pandit Indra and Anand Bakshi. The movie had Asha Bhonsle, Sudha Malhotra, Manna Dey and Mohd Rafi as playback singers. It had eight songs of which the blog has the following three.

O mere pyaaron zameen ke taaron 8 september 2020

The last song posted (O mere pyaaron zameen ke taaron) had a post by Nahmji. It was an attempt to combine the birthdays of the singing legend Asha Bhonsle and music director of yesteryears S. Mohinder. Almost like what I am attempting with this post. And just like Nahmji, I also realized that the composer of the ’50s and ’60s passed away last September on the 6th, two days before he would have turned 95. I read through this news item which was written by Kushal Gopalka. It gave me a lot of knowledge about the music director of such popular songs as ‘Guzara hua zamaana aata nahi dobaara’ from the 1956 release ‘Shirin Farhad’. If I had not read that article I would not have known that I have heard songs tuned by him and enjoyed them.

Today’s song has the child actors Daisy Irani (Mangoo) and Honey Irani (Tingu) lip-syncing to Asha Bhonsle and Sudha Malhotra. This sweet and cute sounding song is penned by Anand Bakshi. The kids Mangoo and Tingu are on a trip in quest of Bhagwan because they have been told that their mothers have gone to “Bhagwan ka ghar”. In the course of their travels they come in contact with a number of people who provide them with diverse answers about where to find Bhagwan. The songs of the movie are set around these incidents. Rather interesting movie, I managed to see part of it in my quest of locating the actors mentioned in the cast.

With this post I wish my favourite singer Asha Bhonsleji on turning a year older. May she have a healthy and lovely life and may we have the pleasure of hearing her for some more years.
