5595 Post No. : 18069

Today (12 November 2023) is “Deepaawali”, the festival of lights.

In some of my earlier posts discussing Deepawali, I have opined that Indians are not performing Laxmi Puja the right way and that is why we are not being adequately blessed by Goddess Laxmi. In those posts, I alluded to our habits (passed down to us over generations) that was keeping us poor.

We have also noticed that during deepaawali time in the recent past, we were being told that Deepaawali was causing air pollution in our cities and so we should not burst crackers during deepawali. Influencers would preach us on the importance of keeping our air clean. This one day of deepaawali, we were told makes our air polluted throughout the year.

There are sites that keep track of air quality. I have taken data from one such site viz iqair.com to examine real facts about air quality of various places.

According to this site, the top ten most polluted nations in the world (based on air quality) are:-

Country AIQ pollution rank (lower number means more pollution)
Chad 1
Iraq 2
Pakistan 3
Bahrain 4
Bangladesh 5
Burkina Faso 6
Kuwait 7
India 8
Egypt 9
Tajikistan 10

We see that countries above India do not even celebrate Deepawali. So the myth that deepawali creates pollution does not bear scrutiny.

There is this thinking among some that industrialisation leads to pollution. But when we look at the list of most industrialised nations (based on manufacturing output) from a relevant site here is the list of top 10 industrialised nations and their ranking in air quality :-

Country Manufacturing output world rank HDI Air quality pollution rank (Higher number means less pollution)
China 1 79 25
USA 2 21 99
Japan 3 19 97
Germany 4 9 88
South Korea 5 19 56
India 6 132 8
France 7 28 84
Italy 8 30 52
UK 9 18 101
Taiwan 10 19 76

The above table is quite eye opening. It shows us that countries that are actually developed (that have high industrialisation as well as high Human Development Index have cleaner air. On the other hand China and India, that are supposedly growing at high GDP rate of growth may be growing, but they are not developing as far as air quality is concerned.

Interestingly, same is applicable for some neo rich countries that become rich thanks to some natural resources (such as petroleum) but are under developed from Human resource point of view because they continue the same bad third world habits that they had before they became neo rich. Their poor human resource can be seen from their low rank in Global innovation index.

Here are the details of few such neo rich countries that have poor air quality:-

Country AIQ Pollution rank (low number means more pollution) Earning per capita rank Global innovation index
Bahrain 4 19 Does not figure in top 60
Kuwait 7 23 Does not figure in top 60
UAE 11 6 43
Qatar 14 5 52
Saudi Arabia 15 20 53

Thus we see that pollution is a country is not dependent on whether the country celebrates Deepawali. It is not even dependent on per capita income. Some Very rich countries as well as some very poor countries are highly polluted.
On the other hand, there is a direct correlation between air pollution and level of development of a country (as defined by HDI and global innovation index). Countries that are rich and highly developed ensure that their country stays less polluted.

Here is a list of countries with high HDI, high global innovation ranking and their AIQ rank

Country HDI rank Global innovation rank AIQ pollution rank (high rank means less pollution)
Switzerland 1 3 95
Norway 2 15 114
Iceland 3 28 126
Hong Kong 4 NA (China 16) 72
Australia 5 19 123
Denmark 6 6 103
Sweden 7 5 115
Ireland 8 17 109
Germany 9 8 88
Netherlands 10 7 87
Finland 11 8 119
Singapore 12 2 77

If India has such high pollution levels, then it is because we are inherently a third world nation with third world habits. If we really want to develop, then we will need to take care of our human resources, viz manpower. If our manpower gets educated, and gets trained and become highly productive and highly innovative, then that will lead to true development of the country.

Based on my observations and experience, I feel that we have people who are aware of this fact, but their number is quite low. It is time we become more aware and take proactive steps to ensure that India becomes a developed nation in the true sense of the word. Increased earning per capita does not necessarily make a country rich if it is not accompanied by increase in the quality of manpower that the country possesses. We in India often think that it is the government responsibiliy to do everything. But we must know that government is elected by us, and those elected by us may be good enough to give speeches and win elections, but making the country developed may not be their core competence. So that is mainly the responsibility of people who care about this matter. For example, business houses. We have many of our industrial/ business houses that have as part of their social responsibility opened various institutions/ organisations that have played vital role in the development of India as a nation. How can we forget many schools/ colleges/ research institutes that were either opened by Indian business houses or they donated money and/ or land for them.

Nowadays CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) has become a buzzword. Corporate houses are required to allocate 2 % of their net profit towards social causes. Indian Government has played its role by formulating this policy in Company law 2013. India became the first country to legally mandate corporate social responsibility. Section 135 of India’s Companies Act 2013 makes it mandatory for companies of a certain turnover and profitability to spend 2% of their average net profit for the past three years on CSR. While some corporate houses were doing it already, others will also have to do it now.

Moreover, our education system will have to undergo an overhaul. Our present education system does not encourage critical and original thinking, analytical abilities etc. Our “educated” people are often unemployable and cannot be expected to take India up the development ladder.

There are many people in India who have done well in India as well as abroad. But that is not because of our education system, but despite it. Their own private studies, over and above what they learnt in the system, helped them from evading the ill effects of our education system.

Lack of good quality education is one of the reason why we have lots of people in India who would take short cuts, instead of doing things the right way. So much so that people taking short cuts are often praised for their jugaad. We do not realise that short cuts only work during favourable conditions and in adverse conditions, these jugaad solutions would not only fail, but often would have fatal consequences.

“Chalta hai attitude” is another side effect of our education system. If people do not do their work in time, it leads to lots and lots of pending work. India has fallen behind other nations that were like us in the past, because they worked to develop their nations, while we kept postponing/ procrastinating things that we should have done long back.

Good thing is that things are looking up for India. If more and more Indians start contributing, instead of expecting the government or others to do everything, then our progress will be faster and more holistic.

Today we celebrate Deepaawali, the festival of light. It is the most important festival not only for those who celebrate it, but also for businessmen, whether or not they celebrate it personally. The business activities that take place during this period beats the economic activities of the rest of the year by a big margin. This is figuratively the worship of Goddess Laxmi by those who celebrate it, whereas the blessings of Goddess Laxmi literally get showered on the business world on this day. 🙂

On this occasion, here is a “jagmag deep” song from “Hazaar Raaten”(1953). This movie was produced and directed by Jayant Desai for Jayant Desai Productions, Bombay. The movie had Rehana, Bipin Gupta, Manhar Desai, Cuckkoo, Satyanarayan, Kuldeep Akhtar, Rewashankar, Gajendra Singh, Yunus, Shakuntala, Ameer Banu etc in it.

“Hazaar Raaten”(1953) had ten songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Hazaar Raaten”(1953) to appear in the blog. The song is song by Shamshad Begam and chorus. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and safe Deepaawali. May all of you be blessed by Goddess Laxmi as well as the associated Gods and Goddesses like Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesh and Lord Vishwakarma. That is because Goddess Laxmi blesses us only after we have been blessed by the Gods and Goddesses mentioned above.

Atul ji,
Thanks for an interesting (as usual) post on Pollution and how our DEEPAWALI celebration is not responsible for it. You have taken efforts to prove your point by collecting relevant data.
The most important pertinent point in this post is ” our inherent third world habits “.
As you have pointed out, the only and the most important culprit for this is our education system.
If one takes a look at the other countries, they all had their first priority after their independence or after a shift to democracy, was to change the mentality of their citizens in favour of pride for nation and their responsibilities towards a strong and healthy nation building.
For this, they followed development of a suitable education system, which will inculcate strong nationalism, sense of responsibility and amending the lifestyles to suit national welfare.
India miserably failed in this as the priorities of our leaders were different. Those who understood and wanted to do right things were riduculed and kept away from management of the country.
Misleading and hollow doctrines like secularism, caste reservation and Nehruvian socialism etc superceded need to make nationalist citizens.
All this continued our ‘third world habits’ from which we are yet to free ourselves.
Good that a beginning is on the anvil now and hopefully the next generation will be more nationalistic.
Only a ‘Nation First’ mentality will help us get rid of past blunders. Pollution, ‘chalta hai ‘ attitude and such matters will be taken care of with this.
Thanks for providing us an article on a thought provocating social problem .

Thanks a lot for your comments. There are many narratives that are run about India which most Indians blindly believe because they lack the analytical abilities (thanks to our education system) to check whether those narratives are correct. It boggles the mind how much falsehood has been spread about India and how much currency these falsehood have gained among Indians. A major cleanup is needed to clear these false facts. I will come up with more details in future posts.

It is not that Deepaawali crackers do not cause pollution. They cause it, but only for one day. It makes no contributions for the remaining 364 days of the year. There are non deepaawali days where the air quality is even worse, but the activists and others conveniently keep quiet on those occasions.

The Analytical capabilities will develop once the citizens become staunch Nationalists. A true Nationalist will not easily accept false narratives and will go to find the truth in order to counteract the falsehood. This will happen when true Bharat history is taught instead of made up Mughal glories and systematic approach to making ‘Nation First’ citizens through revised new education system.
Your analytical posts play a role in exposing the false narratives, surely.
Go ahead and just do it. We are with you !
