Today’s song is from the film Samaaj-1954.
The film was produced by Ashok Kumar, under his own banner Ashok Kumar productions, Bombay. As expected in those days, the film’s director was Vasant Joglekar and the Music Director was Arun Kumar Mukherjee. He was Ashok Kumar’s cousin (their mothers were sisters). The cast was Ashok Kumar, Usha Kiran, Shashikala, Anup Kumar, Agha, Nazir hussain, leela Mishra, Iftikhar, Sumati Gupte, Aroop Kumar (son of Ashok Kumar) and others. There were 2 Guest artistes – S.N.Banerjee and Dhumal. The film’s songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Why did I say ” as expected in those days” about the director Vasant Joglekar, in the above paragraph ? Let me ask you a question. How many friends do you have ? Some may have few and some may have many. Facebook friends are available in thousands. But I am asking you how many true/real friends you have ? Think and you will realise, truly speaking, very few real friends are there in life. If this is the condition for you and me, what must be this in the ‘make believe’ world of films -where everybody is for himself. Cut-throat competition and friendship for the specific time and purpose are hallmarks of Film industry. In this situation, there was one true friendship in the film industry, which was often quoted as an example to be emulated. This was the friendship of Ashok Kumar and Vasant Joglekar. They were true friends and their friendship ended only when Joglekar died.
Vasant Joglekar, actor-by compulsion and producer/Director-by choice was born on the Christmas day, 25th September 1914 at Nagpur. He started his filmi career as asstt. to Master Vinayak in 1942. In the struggling days he met Ashok Kumar and they became friends forever.
Starting with Aap ki seva mein-47,in which Lata Mangeshkar sang her first Hindi film solo, Joglekar produced 10 films and directed 20 films ( 11 Hindi and 9 Marathi). In one of the Marathi films directed by this young man-Vasant Joglekar, actress Sumati Gupte was acting in it. They fell in love and soon got married in 1943. Sumati became Sumati Gupte Joglekar. In due course, the couple had 3 daughters- Meera, Chanda and Madhushri.
In almost all his films Ashok Kumar was a fixture. There was a time when Ashok Kumar was involved in 30 films at one time, still the 31st film was that of Joglekar. The only condition Dadamuni used to put was that Joglekar’s wife, actress/housewife Sumati Gupte Joglekar should provide him food Tiffin cooked by her own hands, at the shooting place ! . He was very fond of her cooking. No wonder, Sumati was a CKP by birth-a fish eater and Bangali babu liked Fish dishes very much !
Joglekar’s Filmography as a Director in Hindi films – Aap ki sewa mein-47, Adalat-48, Nand Kishore-51, Jeet Kiski-52, Firdaus-53, Samaj-54, Karigar-58, Aanchal-60, Aaj aur kal-63, Ek Kali Muskayee-68 and last film Prarthana-69. Vasant Joglekar tried to promote his daughter Meera as a Heroine in Hindi films, with the film Ek Kali Muskayee-68. However, she was not successful and the film was a flop. Vasant Joglekar died on 13-1-1993.
As far as the music Director Arun kumar Mukherjee is concerned, not much information is available about him. Arunkumar is a case in point how , in those days , people were attracted towards this film industry. Arunkumar Mukherjee born on 14-2-1912,at Calcutta. He was the maternal cousin( their mothers were sisters) of actor Ashok kumar. Arunkumar, after his education, started a prospering business in Nagpur. Enamoured by the All India fame of Ashok Kumar ,he too aspired to join the films. He was a good singer anyway. Finally, Ashok Kumar got him a job in Bombay Talkies, as a singer, on a salary of Rs. 60/- p.m.
His first song in Nirmala-38 was a hit but he got a good name only after his songs in Bandhan-40 got very famous, particularly,”Chana jor garam’. he sang in kangan, bandhan, Azaad, punarmilan, Jhoola, Anjaan, Naya Sansar etc etc. His song-Dheere dheere aa re badal, main to dilli se dulhan laya re, nacho nacho pyare etc became very popular. He sang 67 songs in 31 films. He also acted in 8 films. Kangan, Bandhan, Azaad, Naya Sansar, Anjaan, Jwar Bhata, Hamari Baat and Mashaal.
As a Music Director, he gave music to Pratima-45, Hatimtai-47, Shamsheer-53,Parineeta-53,Samaj-54 and Teen Bhai-55
His death was very tragic. He was returning from a trial show of ‘Bandish’,along with cousin Ashok Kumar, in his car. All of a sudden, he got a massive heart attack and he died instantly, on the lap of the man who had brought him to the films in Bombay-Ashok kumar. The date was 6-12-1955. He was only 43 year old at that time.
The story of this film was a routine ‘Ghisi-piti’ (घिसी पिटी ) theme, partly predictable and partly unbelievable. First of all, can you imagine the sophisticated, suave Ashok kumar to act like a tough, strong wrestler and a highly principled simpleton Truck Driver ? To start with, this was the most unpalatable part of the story. The story was….
“Dada” was employed as a Truck Driver by the Royal Theatrical Company. He was a carefree single person not bothering about what the society thought, when he helped the needy. The village belle Munni loved him, but he considered her as a nuisance. When the town bully, Kalia, tried to force Munni to marry him, “Dada” gave him a sound beating. Not only this, but he also defeated Kalia in a wrestling bout during the village festival. Munni was very happy, but “Dada” only tried to protect and act as per his principles.
When Chhabi came to him after she was thrown out of her house by her step mother, because she loved Ravi, their neighbour’s son, ‘Dada’ promptly brought her into his domestic safety. After a few days, when the society started criticising “Dada” for living with an young unmarried girl, he decides to move away to another locality.
Seeing that “Dada” was in trouble due to her, Chhabi left his house and disappeared.’Dada’ became agitated with a thought that she would commit suicide, he ran helter skelter to search her. Chhabi’s friend Ravi also came to his help and they went to the river. Sure enough. before their eyes, Chhabi jumped into the river to die. ‘Dada’ too jumped and saved her. Meanwhile the villagers also gathered there. Everyone realised their mistake and they cheered “Dada”.
Munni took this opportunity and her marriage was fixed with “Dada”, while Ravi and Chhabi also united. The End !
Out of 7 songs of the film, 3 were discussed few years ago. Here is the 4th song, sung by Asha Bhosle and Chorus. Enjoy….

The above comment was meant to point towards the fact that a song from the film ‘Samaaj’ was covered 10 years back, only that was 6th December. This post is dated 7th December.
That post of 10 years back mentioned so many Arunkumar/s- Mukherjee, Ahuja & our own encyclopaediaji.
