‘Geeta Mera Naam’ was a 1974 movie produced by RK Nayyar. Sadhana was the star and the director of the film. The film also starred Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Helen, Rajendranath, Ramesh Deo, Agha, Birbal, Janakidas, Manmohan, Jr. Mehmood, Keshto Mukherjee, Purnima, Murad, Achala Sachdev, Keshav Rana, Randhir, Birbal, Ram Avtar etc. The film’s music was by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Rajendra Krishan was the lyricist. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle & Mohd Rafi were the playback singers used.
The film had a simple lost-and-found story. (I had seen it a few years back on youtube as I sat to write this post).
Here is the summary:-
“After her husband passes away, Saraswati (Achala Sachdev), who leads a life of near-destitution, takes over the responsibility of looking after their four children, two sons, Suraj and Chandu, and twin-daughters, Kavita and Geeta. She takes them to the fair where Suraj has a monkey tattooed on his arm, while Chandu is getting his arm tattooed, Suraj returns to his mom and gets her to buy him a toy monkey. Then bandits attack, abduct Suraj, while Kavita and Chandu are separated, leaving Saraswati alone with Geeta. Years later all four children have grown up. Suraj now calls himself Johnny (Sunil Dutt) and is an underworld don, who makes wax statues of people who betray him and beats up others who do not laugh at his jokes; Chandu (Ramesh Deo) has been adopted by a childless couple and is now a Police Inspector; Kavita is now Neeta (Sadhana), who has been adopted by a devious couple, who have sold her to a man named Mohan (an unnamed actor); while Geeta (Sadhana again) is a rough-and-tough woman of the streets, who makes a living through petty crime. The paths of the four are fated to collide when Neeta is arrested by none other than Chandu for killing Mohan, and Geeta, when she finds out Neeta’s real identity, takes it upon herself to find out who Mohan’s real killer is – not knowing that this will throw her in the arms of a smuggler named Raja (Feroz Khan), as well as force her to confront Raja’s boss – none other than Johnny himself; her long-lost brother.”

The Mohd Rafi song appears repeatedly through the movie & the movie’s vinyl cover lists that song as a 3-part song.
This was one of the last released movies of actress Sadhana. She looked very pretty all through the film which has been always written as her last-ditch attempt to re-establish herself in the Hindi film world. She was away for a treatment of hyperthyroidism in the mid-sixties; and on returning she was seen in successful films like ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’, ‘Sachaai’, ‘Intequam’ (all in 1969) and also ‘Ishq Par Zor Nahin’, Dil Daulat Duniya’ & ‘Aap Aaye Bahar Aaye’. Sadhana was always a decent dancer & the seductive song from this fiilm (suniye zara dekhiye na) showed she was comfortable even in that dance form. I don’t know the fate of “Geeta Mera Naam” at the box office, and if it was a flop then the only reason I can put a finger on is, maybe the casting of Sunil Dutt as Sadhana’s lost brother; as before this they were always romantically paired in superhit films like ‘Mera Saaya”, ‘Waqt”, “Gaban” (saw this film recently & liked it).
My personal favourites of Sadhana I have mentioned in the post to the song “Mujhe maar daalo mein mar jaaungi” from this film.
With this post we are remembering Sadhana Nayyar (born Anjali Shivdasani) on her birth anniversary which is on 2nd September. She would have turned 83. Her father who was a fan of actress Sadhana Bose renamed her ‘Sadhana’ at the age of 5.
Also thanking the music legend Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of the Laxmi-Pyare duo, for all the wonderful songs they have given us from the time they made their debut in films through “Parasmani” in 1963. We all know that the duo started as assistants to another legendary composer duo – Shankar Jaikishan. L-P or Laxmi-Pyare (as Laximkant Pyarelal were fondly addressed) gave music to over 635 films in their career that spanned 35 years. The last film for which L-P gave music jointly was possibly the Dharmendra starrer “barsaat ki raat” (1998); and after Laxmikant’s passing away Pyarelal Sharma continued giving music for films as “Laxmi-Pyare” only. The 2004 released “Mere Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin” was the last time any film had music by L-P.
3rd September sees Pyarelalji turning a year older.
