#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
—————————————————————

Today on 24th December 2024 we are celebrating the birth centenary of the legendary singer Mohd Rafi. He was born on 24th December 1924. On this occasion we are presenting songs sung by Mohd Rafi. As I mentioned in my earlier post today I am trying to post Rafi songs starting from the decade of 1941-1950. With this song I move to the decade of 1951-1960. Here is a song from the ‘1957’ movie “Paisaa” which was a movie of social genre. It was directed by Prithviraj Kapoor and it was his home production for ‘Prithvi Theatres, Bombay’.

The cast of this movie included Prithviraj Kapoor, Azra Mumtaz, Pushpa, Ravindra Kapoor, Vishwa Mehra, Shreeram, Sudesh Kumar, Kuldeep, Zohra Sahgal, Sati devi, Mansaram, Suresh, Armelene, Rani Azad, Indumati, Vijaybala, Vishi Kapoor, Subhash, sundar, Bhagwati Prasad, Hari Kapoor, Kanhaiyya Lal, H N Singh, Shashiraj etc in it. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.07.1957. As mentioned above Prithviraj Kapoor was the producer and director of this movie.

“Paisaa-1957” has five songs composed by Ram Ganguly and the lyricist for this movie are Nazeer Akbarabaadi, Lalchand Bismil(aka Bismil Peshawari), and one song is a bhajan by Surdas. Two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog.

Following is what our in-house encyclopedia Shree Arunkumar jee had mentioned about this movie and in his comments on the earlier two songs from this movie. I have compiled his comments on both the songs which gives us a brief about the movie and its’ lyricist Lalchand Bismil.

“An interesting fact of this film is that this was actually the adaptation of Prithvi Theatre’s popular stage drama”Paisa”. In other words the story was slightly amended to suit the screenplay of a film. Although the Theatre drama was very popular, the film was a resounding Flop!

Not much info is available about Lalchand Bismil. Lalchand Purohit, a young writer from Peshawar came to the film world with great dreams. He had command over Urdu, Persian, Hindi and English. He was a well-read person. A thorough gentleman to the core, may be this was not enough to survive in the ‘dog eat dog’ film line. He tried his hand at Lyrics, story, screenplay and dialogue writing in big banners like Minerva and New Theatre also. He first wrote dialogues in SAPERA-1939 of new Theatres. In Minerva’s path breaking story of incest,Bharosa-1940,he wrote the story, screenplay and Lyrics also. After Paisa-1957, lyrics, his trace is totally lost. He took the name of Bismil, as he was impressed with Ramprasad Bismil.”

Today I am presenting the third song from this movie which is sung by Mohd Rafi. This is the only Rafi song in this movie. The other singers for this movie are Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begam and Mubarak Begam. The earlier two songs posted on the blog were in the voice of Geeta Dutt. Geet Kosh Vol-III (1951-1960) mention Nazeer Akbarabaadi and Lalchand Bismil as joint lyricist for this today’s song.

Listen to the song and imagine what we have read about Rafi Saab and the many stories from his personal life about his generosity and helping nature. And listen to this last stanza in this song …

“bhookhon ko
gareebon ko
yateemon ko khilaa jaa
warnaa ye tujhe
god mein tadpaayegee baabaa
paise ke pench mein kabhee
aanaa naheen baabaa
insaaneeyat pe daagh
lagaanaa naheen baabaa”

I have tried to note the words correctly however at few places I have not been able to get the correct words , where I would request knowledgeable readers to help to provide correct words there.

Song-Paisaa hee rang roop hai paisaa hee maal hai (Paisa)(1957) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Nazeer Akbarabaadi+Lalchand Bismil, MD-Ram Ganguly

Lyrics

o o o

o o o o
o o o o o o o
paisaa hee jazbtaa hai
insaan kee jaat ko
bin paise sadaa
bhaai bhee poochhe naa baat ko
paisaa hee zeb detaa hai
byaah aur baaraat ko
paisaa ho paas dulhaa bane
aadhee raat ko o

tego tabar uthhaate hain
paise ke waaste
peer o sana lagaate hai
paise ke waaste
maidaan mein jakhm khaate
paise ke waaste
yaan tak ke sar kataate hain
paise ke waaste

o o o o o o o o o o
paisaa hee badee cheez hai

o o o o

ye qabr mein to saath naheen jaayegee baabaa

bhookhon ko
gareebon ko
yateemon ko khilaa jaa
warnaa ye tujhe
god mein tadpaayegee baabaa
paise ke pench mein kabhee
aanaa naheen baabaa
insaaniyat pe daagh lagaanaa naheen baabaa
insaaniyat pe daagh lagaanaa naheen baabaa
insaaniyat pe daagh lagaanaa naheen baabaa

Shree Atul jee,

Sir, ‘dang o davaal’ is correct. This I have checked.

I think ‘jaspataataa hai’ is also correct. The other marked with (?) is where I have doubt.

Thanks and regards,

Its is “Jazbataata”. “Jazb” is absorb, amalgamate or dissolve. Meaning of the line is “money is able to mitigate the differences of ‘zaat paat’. Or the ‘zaat’ here could mean the ‘character(bad’ or ‘khaslat”(essential nature – negative).

‘Jazb’ is different from ‘Jazba” which is emotion or feeling, Or “Morale” / Spirit.

Second stanza is as follows:

teg o tabar uthhaate hain
paise ke waaste
peer o sana lagaate hai
paise ke waaste
maidaan mein jakhm khaate
paise ke waaste
yaan tak ke sar kataate hain
paise ke waaste

Another revelation, with a different voice, probably to suit the actor singing on screen.

Thanks.

heard the song again today, after hearing it on the day it was posted.

it sounds like some fakeer/ saadhu would be singing it onscreen. And it may be running through the film & appearing at various times of the story
