“Maan Abhimaan-1980” was directed by Hiren Nag for ‘Rajshri Productions, Bombay’. It had Rameshwari, Raj Kiran, Shashi Puri, Kavita Kiran, C.S. Dubey, Jagirdar, Yunus Parvez, Sundar, Arun Kumar, Pardesi, Albela, Master Rajesh, Chandu Allahabadi, Brijendra Mohan and others. Amrish Puri, Iftekhar and Sulochana had a guest appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.08.1980.

As is the case for other movies from ‘Rajshri Productions’, this movie “Maan Abhimaan-1980” is another movie from them, where they give us a clean, heart-warming, family drama movie with some very nice musical compositions.

I was 12 years and six months old in 1980 when this movie was released.I had not watched this movie at that time. I have no recollections of this movie or its songs being discussed in our group of ‘cricket playing-movie watching’ friends. I watched this movie for the first time couple of months back, on the internet.

I liked this movie for its simple story and the engrossing screenplay, the performances of almost all cast members and its music.

Despite having some good songs none of the songs of this movie ‘Maan Abhimaan’ made it to the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala-1980’.

The movie tells a story of two friends Mathura Prasad (Amrish Puri) and Thakur Sumer Singh (Iftekhar) who are partners in business. Sumer Singh is cheated by Mathura Prasad where Mathura Prasad’s evil accountant Munim (C.S. Dubey) plays an important role in creating a rift between two friends. Not only that he suggests his mentor to purchase the ‘haveli’ of Sumer Singh so that his daughter (Rameshwari as Mallika) and his son Somu (Master Rajesh) will have to vacate the place, and they would remain with no shelter to stay. Mathura Prasad has a son Ajay (Raj Kiran) and a daughter Rekha (Kavita Kiran). Ajay, after finishing his studies in London comes back to India. Mathura Prasad want’s his son to take over his business and among other things the first thing he assigns him is to visit their ancestral village and buy this ‘haveli’ of Sumer Singh. It so happens that on the way Ajay first meets Mallika’s kid brother Somu and develop a friendship with him. The next day when he visits the haveli with Munim, Mallika treats him badly as she always held Ajay’s family responsible for her father’s death. Mallika’s behaviour is beyond Ajay’s understanding. So, he decides to get to the root of the ‘truth’, overlooking his Munim’s continues ‘fuelling’ him, against Mallika. In this process Ajay further develops the bond of friendship with Mallika’s kid brother Somu and tries to make peace with Mallika. Till this time, he is not aware that Somu is the brother of Mallika.

In the meantime, Ajay happens to meet Mallika on many occasions and her behaviour towards him is always the same, as, in him she sees the family of Mathura Prasad who was responsible for her father’s death.
Once, it so happens that, Somu and his school friends have planned for a picnic and waiting for the vehicle which would carry them. However, Lalbhai (Sundar, the assistant at school) informs them Abdul bhai’s vehicle had a breakdown so he will not come. The kids are disappointed. But soon Ajay’s car is passing from there and he stops. Ajay offers Somu that they could join him, and he will drive them to the picnic spot. Somu tells him that his Didi(sister) is also coming.

This is the first time Ajay and Mallika meet in presence of Somu (who later has an important role in bringing them together). Ajay tells Mallika that he was not aware of this. He reluctantly offers her the lift as well. That is when this song situation takes place. Raj Kiran lip syncs in the voice of Suresh Wadkar. Lyrics and music are by Ravindra Jain. We have Rameshwari, Master Rajesh and others present in the picturisation of this song.

Today’s song is frequently heard on Vividh Bharati and all these years I was listening to it without knowing which movie it was from 😊

enjoy!!!
