#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————-————
(75 Years of Republic Of India #Desh Kee Mittee Kee Khushboo#)

Today on 26th January 2025 we are celebrating the 76th Republic Day for our country. This day marks the adoption of Indian Constitution for our Nation which was till then governed by the acts enacted in British Rule. We got our political freedom on 15th August 1947 and it took us two years and five months to implement our own constitution. On this occasion I wish a very happy republic day to all.

On this occasion we will have a couple of patriotic songs that talk about our unity, our culture and our sovereignty. The song in this post is one such song or poem which appeared in the movie ‘Kavi Sammelan’ in the year ‘1972’.

‘Kavi Sammelan-1972’ was directed by Kedar Sharma for ‘Rajshri Productions Pvt Ltd’. It was produced by Tarachand Barjatya. Compering of this ‘program’ and introducing the poets was done by Ramrikh ‘Manhar’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.02.1972. The footnote for this movie page in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions that ‘Bhaarat Ke Shreshthhtam Kavi pehlee baar ek saath rajat-pat par pesh kiye gaye thhe.’

Poems of the following ‘poets’ are included in this movie.

Rashtrakavi Shri Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar’
Santosh Anand (mentioned as ‘Santoshanand’)
Kaka Hathrasi
Som Thakur
Bekal ‘Utsahi’
‘Neeraj’
Snehlata ‘Sneh’
Radheshyam ‘Pragalbh’
Shail Chaturvedi
Govind Vyas
Maya Devi
Nirbhay Hathrasi
Balkavi Bairaagi
Omprakash ‘Aaditya’
Manik Verma
Kedar Sharma
Gopal Prasad Vyas

(Addenda in Geet Kosh for this movie mention that there were two more creations by Vimlesh and Paras Bhramar in this movie.)

Today’s poem is written by Som Thakur. The poet or lyricist for today’s song is Som Thakur, who is a known name in Hindi Literature and a legendary poet. An eminent Hindi lyricist, film songwriter, writer of over dozen books and recipient of many prestigious national awards, Som Thakur is known for his melodious voice and songs of love, sacrifice and humanity. Some of his poems are considered to be milestone in Hindi Poetry and are included in the textbooks of schools/colleges. Som Thakur has also written some memorable songs for Hindi films (which we need to bring here).

Like another well-known poet and lyricist Gopaldas Neeraj, Som Thakur also comes from Agra. He was born on 05.03.1934 in Rajasthan. His family later moved and settled in Agra (UP). His father had a business, and their family was a business family. When Som was born, he was the eighth child to his parents. The earlier seven children (six sons and one daughter) didn’t survive. Thus, Som had a very protected childhood where there was a servant accompanying him wherever he went. He was never allowed to go cycling or swimming. Also, he was always given a bath with warm water and because of that he continued bathing with warm water only. In studies though he qualified for medical studies as he wanted to be a doctor, he was not allowed to go to another city and he had to join College at Agra for his graduation studies. He was not good in Mathematics and so he switched to Arts and studied at Agra College. He did his Masters in Hindi and taught it as a subject while serving at Sr John’s College and Agra College both in Agra. Though he could not become a doctor as he wished he was awarded with an honorary Doctorate by a university in Mainpuri (U.P) later in his life. Som Thakur later continued to travel abroad to establish and strengthen Hindi Centers there. He also continued attending the various Poet Symposia (Kavi Sammelan).

When Som Thakur took to writing poetry he was the first person in his family to do so. No one from his family had connection with literature. It so happened that during his Intermediate Studies one of his friend took him to a ‘Kavi Sammelan’ and after Som Thakur listened to various poets there he thought to put his thoughts in poems and thus started this poetic journey. He then got the membership of a library at ‘Nagri Pracharni’ near Agra at membership fee of Rs.2/- per month. He read a lot of Hindi books and especially of poetess Mahadevi Verma’s books. Som Thakur had a good voice too. So he started presenting his creations. He then met the late Jagat Prakash Chaturvedi who encouraged him to write more. This was during the final of graduations of Som Thakur. He also passed a voice test for ‘Aakaashvaani’ and had worked for them in 1955. Other than this movie ‘Kavi Sammelan’ he wrote two songs for Rajshri’s “Mere Bhaiyyaa-1972”. The article that I referred for the information about Som Thakur mentions that he also wrote for other movie titled as ‘Jamuna Kinaare’. However I could not find any information about this movie.

He must be 89 now and he is still staying at Raja Ki Mandi at Agra with his son Dr Ajit Vardan Singh. His other son Amit Shridan Singh is settled in Poland.

On the occasion of the seventy-sixth Republic Day today I am presenting this poem written by Som Thakur which speaks of the greatness of our country. It speaks of the greatness of its soil, its temples, its seasons, its crops and its saints. Let us now listen to this poem which on screen is recited by Som Thakur himself…

Once again wishing one and all, a very ‘happy republic day’ today !!!

(Note: – Inputs for information about Poet Som Thakur are taken from an article on him by author Hemendra Chaturvedi at pressreader.com dtd. 24.03.2019 (Hindustan Times, Lucknow in section ‘literature-arts-poetry).

Song-Sau Sau Naman karoon main bhaiyya (Kavi Sammelan)(1972) Singer-Som Thakur, Lyrics-Som Thakur

Lyrics

saagar charan pakhaare ganga
sheesh chadhaave neer
saagar charan pakhaare ganga
sheesh chadhaave neer
mere bhaarat ki maatee hai
chandan aur abeer
sau sau naman karoon main bhaiyyaa

(applause)

uttar amarnaath
dakshin mein rameshwar man mohe
poorab puri viraaje
paschim dishaa dwarika sohe
jo nhaave mathura jee kaashee
chhoote lakh chauraasee
kaanhaa raas rache brindaawan mein
jamunaa ke teer
mere bhaarat kee maatee hai
chandan aur abeer

ve rituen jo hamaare
desh kee parikramaa detee hain

chait chaandnee hanse
poos mein pachhuaa tan man parse
jethh tape dhartee girija see
saawan amrit barse
phaagun bhar bhar maare
aisee kesariya pichkaaree
aangan bheenje
tan man bheenje
bheeinje panchrang cheer
mere bhaarat ki maatee hai
chandan aur abeer

(applause)

hamaare desh kee
krishee sampadaa

makkaa jyon pukhraaj
jyonree jaise motee damkein
amma koote dhaan kee chaamar
heer kanee se chamke
arhar
harharaay ke hahrey
gehgehaay ke gehoon
bane khet khalihaan saloney
soney ki jaageer
mere bhaarat kee maatee hai
chandan aur abeer

aur antim pad hai iskaa

mangal bhawan
amangal haaree ke
gun tulsee gaave
surdas ko shyaam rango man
anat kahaan sukh paave
hanske piye garal ko pyaalo
prem deewaanee meera
jyonkee tyon bhar dayee chadariyaa
keh gaye daas kabeer
mere bhaarat ki maatee hai
chandan aur abeer
sau sau naman karoon main bhaiyya
sau sau naman karoon
