‘Jantar Mantar’ (1964) was produced under the banner of Omkar Enterprises and was directed by Radhakant. The cast included Mahipal, Vijaya Chaudhury, Ulhas, Mohan Sheri, Babu Raje, Mridula Rani, Jeevankala, Madhumati, Kesari, Ghanshyam, Rajmala etc. The film was a fantasy drama in which a lot of trick photography was used.

An interesting feature of this film was that the entire credit titles of the film were played against the background of a Jantar Mantar (probably the one located in Jaipur). The point to ponder is why a story of the film was built with a Jantar Mantar being the epicentre. The hint comes just before the start of the credit titles with narrator explaining the background to the story of the film. Kankaal (Mohan Sheri) has taken over the control of Jantar Mantar from Kaal Bhairav (Ulhas) to stop the practice of magic that harness evil spirits (जादू-टोना). He announces that from now onwards, Jantar Mantar would be used only for the study of sun, moon and stars for the benefit of the people.

Vijaya Choudhury (real name, Qurasha Begum) had a lead role in ‘Jantar Mantar’ with Mahipal. She was born in Delhi on 07/04/1936. Her family hailed from Bihar. ‘Bagdaad Kaa Jaadoo’ (1956) was her debut film, followed by ‘Captain Kishore’ (1957), ‘Bade Sarkar’ (1957), ‘Do Phool’ (1958), ‘Satta Baazar’ (1959), ‘Bindiya’ (1960) etc. She got her first lead role in ‘Jaadoo Nagari’ (1962), followed by ‘Bada Aadmi’ (1961), ‘Banarasi Thug’ (1962), ‘Rooplekha’ (1962), Bhootnath’ (1963), ‘Holiday in Bombay’ (1963) and many more. Most of her films with lead roles were ‘B’ grade films. She did supporting roles in the top banner films such as ‘Bindiya’ (1960), ‘Palki’ (1967), ‘Saraswatichandra’ (1968), ‘Sambandh’ (1969) etc.

There was a gap of 5 years in Vijaya Choudhury’s filmy career when her next film, ‘Phir Kab Milogi’ (1974) was released. Vijaya Choudhury never made it big in Hindi film career despite working for nearly two decades. It appears that sometime in the latter half of 1970s, she stopped working in the films. Currently she is said to be staying with her son in Canada.

I have watched ‘Jantar Mantar’ (1964) only recently mainly because it has some melodious songs. Otherwise, the film is not in league with some of the better fantasy films such as ‘Hatim Tai’ (1956) and ‘Parasmani’ (1963).

The story of the film is as under:

The film starts with Kankaal (Ulhas) announcing the capture of Jantar Mantar from Kaal Bhairav (Ulhas) who has been using Jantar Mantar for occult practices. Since he has power to disappear, he runs away from Jantar Mantar in a forest where he invokes his guru to give him a boon to defeat Kankaal. Guru says he can ask only five boons and this is the first one he gets to defeat Kankaal.

Veerbaahu (Qamar) is a worried King as Kaal Bhairav has been kidnapping children from his kingdom for their sacrifice to attain more occult power. King sends his troops to capture him. Because of his disappearing power, they are not able to capture him. Instead, he himself presents before the King and with his power, he destroys everything around his palace and turns King into a stone. The Queen (Mridula Rani) with her son, Prince Kumar survive as they had gone to a temple. On return, they find themselves destitute.

After getting the boon, Kaal Bhairav appears invisible in the court of Kankaal when he was celebrating his victory and challenges Kankaal to fight with him. After a long fight starting in the court and moving towards the sky, forest and lastly to a desert (lots of trick photography), Kaal Bhairav defeats Kankaal by converting him to a camel in desert and takes over Jantar Mantar. Now, Kaal Bhairav wants to celebrate his victory with Neelam Pari’s dance. Meena (Jeevankala) points out that Neelam Pari stays in Paristan and Kaal Bhairav has no power to call her. He vows to attain that power very soon.

In Paristan, Neelam Pari is happy that Kankaal has become a camel as he would not have power to call her on the earth which she dislikes. He had a magic ring which gave him that power. Now after becoming a camel, his magic ring gets settled in a cave which can be retrieved only by a person who has five dots on his left palm and Prince Kumar (Mahipal) have these.

One day when Neelam Pari was traveling in the sky with her friends she sees Prince Kumar with his friend. Kumar also sees her because of his power to see the invisible but not his friend who thinks that Kumar has become mad. Neelam Pari and her friends descend to earth and start taking bath in a pond when Kumar his friend arrive. Afraid of human beings, they run away to fly to Paristan not before Neelam Pari develops an affinity toward Kumar.

Meanwhile, Kaal Bhairav angry with not having the power to summon Neelam Pari, goes back to his Guru for the second boon to get that power. The Guru says that he will get that power only when he retrieves the magic ring which Kankaal had with him and now safely kept in a cave. However, he would be destroyed by burning if he touches that ring. Kaal Bhairav asks his third boon as to how to bring that ring. Guru says that a special person who has five dots on his left palm can bring that ring for him. Kaal Bhairav now asks the fourth boon as to who is that special person. The Guru reveals to him that he is Prince Kumar whose kingdom he has ruined and that person has vowed to kill him. Kaal Bhairav decides to locate Prince Kumar.

Prince Kumar goes to the ruined capital of his kingdom to look for his father while Kaal Bhairav also visits the same place to know from King Veerbaahu the whereabout of his son by temporary bringing him to his human form from the stone. King refuses to divulge anything about his son. As soon as Prince Kumar reaches that place. Kaal Bhairav becomes invisible and Prince Kumar meets the King. Both of them now knows their relation as the King and the Prince. When Kumar goes in search of Kaal Bhairav he suddenly appears in front of the King and turns him into a stone. After that he changes into Sadhu and meets Kumar who requests him to free his father with his superpower. He agrees to help provided he brings the magic ring from the cave and hands over to him. Kumar goes against all odds and brings the magic ring. However, Sadhu asks Kumar to throw the magic ring toward him. Kumar insists that he would hand over to him after coming out of the cave. Sadhu becomes angry and turns himself into Kaal Bhairav. He confines Kumar inside the cave by closing the gate of the cave.

Kumar does not know as to how to come out of the cave. He looks at the magic ring to clean it. Because of his rubbing on the magic ring, Neelam Pari appears. Both are surprised to find each other. She brings him out of the cave through her magic dupatta and gives him way to tackle Kaal Bhairav and bring back his father and his ruined kingdom to normal. For that, he will have to go far off to bring the sacred water from Pancham River facing lots of obstacles. However, Neelam Pari with her magic powers helps Prince Kumar to overcome the obstacles during which they fall in love with each other.

The rest of the story is how Prince Kumar brings the sacred water from Pancham River despite all the obstacles created by Kaal Bhairav which includes kidnapping Neelam Pari by Kaal Bhairav when she becomes powerless after lending her magic dupatta to Prince Kumar to facilitate to reach his destination.

After returning with the sacred water, first, Prince Kumar sprinkles that water on Kankaal to bring him to his human form. Kankaal gives him directions as to how to kill Kaal Bhairav. Kaal Bhairav is now worried as Prince Kumar has more power than him after getting the sacred water from Pancham river. He goes to his Guru asks his 5th and the last boon to get the whereabout of Prince Kumar. Guru tells Kaal Bhairav that Prince Kumar is on his way to Jantar Mantar to kill him and in this Kankaal is also coming to take revenge on him.

Kaal Bhairav meets Prince Kumar and the sword fight takes place between them. Simultaneously, Kaal Bhairav’s consort, Meena helps Neelam Pari to get herself freed from house arrest. She goes flying after the bird which has been released in which Kaal Bhairav’s life resides. After a longish fights between Kaal Bhairav and Prince Kumar and Neelam Pari strangulating the bird, Kaal Bhairav dies. Prince Kumar along with Neelam Pari return to his ruined Kingdom. He sprinkles the sacred water on the ruins which gets reconstructed as before. Queen mother declares Prince Kumar as the King and Neelam Pari as the new Queen.

The film had six songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri and set to music by Sardar Malik. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song, ‘kyaa kahen tujhse mohabbat ho gayee’ rendered by Asha Bhosle. The song is picturised on Vijaya Chaudhury in the role of Neelam Pari. Mohan Sheri, Jeevankala and Kesari can also be seen in the picturisation.

This is the first song in the film when Kankaal (Mohan Sheri) asks his consort (Jeevankala) to call Neelam Pari from Paristan for a dance to celebrate his victory in capturing Jantar Mantar. Asha Bhosle has rendered this melodious song beautifully on the tune probably influenced by Raag Shuddha Kalyan if I go by some Hindi film songs identified in this raag.
