Today’s song is from a less known film Sona Chandi aka Bhai-Bhai- 1946.

This film was made by the New Bombay Theatres, Bombay. It was produced and directed by R. D.Parinja. Music was by Tufail Faruqi and lyricists were Shamim (1 song), Khawar Jaman (1 song) and Wali Saheb (8 songs). The cast included Chandni, Suresh, Kishori, Saroj Borkar, kamla, Amrutlal, Radha Kishen and others.

There were originally only 10 songs, when the film was issued a Censor Certificate (No. 34253 dt 19-7-1946) and the film was released in August 1946. After the death of Gandhi ji in January 1948, there was a spate of songs on Gandhi, by various singers in all languages. Music Directors Husnlal-Bhagatram made a 4 part set of 2 records of the song “Suno suno aye duniya walo” sung by Mohd. Rafi. This record became a bestseller. On the Independence day Rafi sang this song in presence of Nehru and he was given a Gold medal too. Similarly, the then rising star of singing-Lata Mangeshkar sang a song ” Pyare Bapu ki Kahani” composed by Music director D.C.Dutt. While H-B refused hundreds of offers of featuring their song in Hindi films, D.C.Dutt agreed to include this song in the film Sona Chandi-1946 (along with another song by Saroj Borkar). The film was re-censored getting certificate no. 38154 on 9-4-1948. The film, with these two songs, was re-released in June 1948. Thus the film’s total songs became 12.

Film Sona Chandi-1946/48 was the first and the last film as well as the only film in which dancer CUCKOO played co- Heroine’s role, taking the screen name “KISHORI”. However, due to her bad and faulty diction of the Hindi dialogues, the role became the laughing stock of the film and she was never ever offered any major role, with dialogues, in her entire career thereafter. She strictly remained only a dancer in films.

The third and the most important feature of this film was, one of the cast members – KAMLA. Her full name was KAMLABAI KAMAT. What is so special about her ? A good question. Hardly anyone knows that Kamlabai Kamat was the first female actor who acted in an Indian film. We all know that in the initial stages of Films, no woman was ready to work in films as it was not considered a good thing. Dadasaheb Phalke had written once that in the quest of a female actor, he finally went even to a whore house on Lamington road in Bombay. There too no prostitute was ready to work in a film, claiming that it was a lower profession than prostitution ! In such social taboo conditions, Kamlabai and her mother Durgabai dared to act in Dadasaheb Phalke’s second silent feature film “Mohini Bhasmasur-1913. Kamla was the heroine Mohini and Durgabai did Parvati’s role in this silent film.

Kamla was the daughter of a GSB(Gaud Saraswat Brahmin) family of Belgaum. Her parents were Anand Kamat Nashodkar and Durgabai. Her father was a professor of History in J.J.School of Arts, Bombay. Kamla was born in 1900. When she was just 3 year old, her mother separated from husband and left home with the child. Due to her expertise in singing and acting, she started work in stage dramas. Even Kamla went on stage at the age of just 4 years itself.

Due to all this their community boycotted them, but she did not stop working on stage and touring. In 1913, when her company was in Nashik and was on the verge of closing down, Phalke offered them roles in his film. She joined him. Kamla featured as the lead actress. Kamla did 11 silent films in all.

Meanwhile she got married to Raghunath Gokhale and they had 3 children – Chandrakant, Suryakant and Lal ji. Kamla and Raghunath were doing stage work. Once during a drama ‘Gopichand’, Raghunath got a stroke. Kamlabai donned his dress as a male and went on the stage and acted as a male till the drama was over. Raghunath died the same night.

Kamlabai continued her work in Talkie films in Hindi and Marathi. She acted in 11 silent films and 38 Talkie films. Her last film was Gehrayee-1980. Her eldest son Chandrakant became an actor. Suryakant and Lalji became expert Tabla players. Kamla retired . Her mother Durgabai died in 1997 and Kamlabai died in 1998.

A Documentary ” Kamlabai” was made in Hindi and Marathi, by Reena Mohan of Calcutta, in 1991. (based on information from http://www.peepultree.world, wiki, book Vintage actors’ filmography by Nand Kishore, book Chanderi smriti chitre by D.B.Samant and my notes)

A note on Tufail Faruqi, M.D. of this film….

Tufail was born in Taran Taaran, Amritsar, Punjab, in 1918. After taking musical lessons from ustad Abdul Waheed Khan for several years, he joined A I R, Lahore. He also worked with many composers. Finally, he got his first film, ‘ Sona Chaandi ‘-46. Out of 12 songs of the film, he composed 10 songs and 2 were composed by D C Dutt. In this film Tufail gave an opportunity to a young but promising newcomer, who was struggling to get established as a Playback singer- Mohammed Rafi. Rafi got 4 songs in this film and he was overjoyed at this break.

Later Tufail gave music to his second film-” Dekhojee”-47. Here too he composed 6 songs and the other 6 were composed by composer Sabir Hussain. Actually, Sabir Hussain was his assistant and just to encourage him, Tufail credited these songs to him.

After partition, Tufail migrated to Pakistan, along with family and Sabir Hussain in tow, but had to struggle hard there too. His first film was Barkha in 1953. Tufail gave music to 37 films, mostly Punjabi films and less Urdu. His film,” Bahadur Kissan”-1970 had a song-” Mera sons des kissan da”,sung by singer Masood Rana. This tune was a blatant direct copy of the song ” Ye desh hai veer jawanon ka” from Naya Daur-57. The Pakistani song became a tremendous hit, not only with the Punjab farmers but also was played on Radio and TV often.

Tufail Farooqi’s sister was Master Ghulam Haider’s first wife ( Umrao Zia Begum was his second wife), from whom he had a son-Saleem Haider. Later Saleem joined Pakistan Army and rose upto the rank of Lt. General. He retired in 2000.

Tufail worked till early 80s. He married the famous Pak singer Pappu Pukhraj in 1953.

Tufail Farooqi died in Lahore on 25-3-1988.

Today’s song is from Rafi’s early career. It is a duet with Shamshad Begum. Enjoy….
