Today’s song is from the ‘Social’ film – Sara Jahan Hamara-1961.
I do not understand on what basis filmmakers give titles to their films. This film is categorised as a ‘Social’ film in HFGK. The film story has a murder, lootmar, girl trading, fighting, court, Jail and such things. Embedded in all this there is a Love story. In my opinion, the film should have been classified either as a stunt/action film or a crime/mystery film.
Anyway, it is always a mystery how the film makers decide the titles of their films. When I rummaged through the The Film Title index book (1931-2012) by Hamraz ji, I found some interesting titles.
There are 3 films on Room Numbers. Room No. 9-1946, Room No. 17-1961 and Room No. 203-1980.
Then there are 2 films on House. House No. 13-1990 and House No. 44-1955.
” Mahal” was made 4 times, in 1949, 1969,1990 and 2001.
I found 2 funny titles. “? A question mark”-2012 and 10 ml Love – 2011.
There were films titled “10 0’clock”-1958, “11 o’clock”-1948 and “12 o’clock”-1958.
Films using a calendar were 26th January-1956, 23rd March-2002, 13th May-2010, 25th July-1951, 26th July-2007, 15th August-1993, 2nd October-2003, 6thDecember-2009 and 16th December-2002.
Even days were counted. 30 days-2004, 100 Days-1991 and 300 days-1938.
Year Wise films were 1857-1946, 1920-2012, 1942-1993, 1947-1999 and 2001-1998.
I was utterly shocked when I found that there was a film titled ” B-13 Fear has a new address”-2009. The reason for my shock was that B-13 happens to be my own flat number in our Housing Society in Mumbai ! Nothing is scary about my flat except that I live there !!! (wonder how they knew !).
Today’s film was directed by Prakash Chhabda and music was by Babul (of the Bipin-Babul pair). Syed Maqbul Babul was an assistant to Madan Mohan for a long time. His speciality was making melodious tunes. Independently, he gave music to 5 films-
Chalis din-59
Mujrim kaun khooni kaun-65
Reshmi Rumal-61
Nakli Nawab-62 and
Sara jahan hamara-61
Many of his songs became famous,e.g. “main deewana mastana”-Mukesh, 40 din, “Gardish mein ho tare”-Mukesh,reshmi Rumaal and “sarpe chunariya kaali motiyan waali” etc.also “chheda jo dil ka tarana”-Rafi, Nakli Naqab. He also acted as a Choreographer in the film ‘Ek baar muskura do’-1972. After this he migrated to Pakistan and died there penniless in 1995.
He did a better and more fulfilling work as a jodi of Bipin-Babul.
The cast of the film Sara Jahan Hamara-1961 included Premnath, Shyama, Janakidas, Heeralal, Azra, Majny etc.
In Hindi films, actors were branded, like Meena Kumari, Nimmi and Nazir Hussain for weeping roles, Bhagwan for Comedy, Karan Dewan, Pradeep Kumar and Bharat Bhushan for Lover’s role, Geeta Bali and Nalini Jaywant for playful roles, K.N.Singh for Villain roles etc.etc. Imagine if you see K.N.Singh as a romantic lover and singing love songs around trees with sweet Heroines, or Ashok Kumar as a Mughal King, in a war uniform, brandishing a sword or Keshto Mukherjee/ Kanhaiyalal as sophisticated Millionaires, would you be able to digest it ? In the film Humayun-1945 when Ashok kumar brandished a sword and walked to join a warfield, the theatre audience laughed loudly and ridiculed his awkward walk ! Some images can not be deleted and the mind refuses to accept what is simply opposite to our fixed impressions !
In the same way, I could never accept Premnath as a Lover boy, singing around trees with the heroines. A reasonably good actor but not as a lover ! In today’s film also he is seen as a lover and sings love songs. Difficult to digest !
Premnath Malhotra (21 November 1926 – 03 November 1992), known as Premnath, was an actor, director and also a singer. He was born in the Karimpura locality near Ghanta Ghar in Peshawar, (undivided India) now in Pakistan. His family moved to Jabbalpore, now Jabalpur, in Madhya Pradesh after partition & he moved to Bombay, where he was discovered as an actor.
Premnath married actress Bina Rai. Their children are actor Prem Krishen & Kailash Nath (Monty). They are also grandparents of actress Akanksha Malhotra and director Siddharth Malhotra who are Prem Krishen’s children. Adiraj Malhotra & Arjun Malhotra are the sons of Kailash Nath. His sister Krishna married Raj Kapoor, while his other sister Uma was married to veteran Hindi Film actor Prem Chopra. His brothers Rajendranath and Narendranath were also actors who mostly appeared in comic and supporting roles. He was also a close friend of the actress Asha Parekh.
Premnath made his film debut in “Ajit” 1948 opposite Monica Desai, which was one of the first colour films. He got major roles in Raj Kapoor’s first directorial film “Aag” & “Barsaat” (1949) which was his first major success. Premnath went on to appear in many films for the next three decades, some of which were the biggest block-busters in Indian film history. The films in which he played the leading role failed to do well, but the films in which he played the central villain role or supporting role were some of the biggest blockbusters in Indian film history. Some his most notable films were Aan (1952), Teesri Manzil (1966), Johny Mera Naam (1970),Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), Dharmatma (1975), Kalicharan (1976) and Desh Premee (1982). He also starred in the Punjabi film Sat Sri Akal (1977).
Premnath fell in love with actress Bina Rai during the filming of “Aurat”. They married and formed a production company together called P. N. films. They held high hopes for their films, which didn’t become hits, such as Shagufa, Prisoner of Golconda, Samunder and Watan. Thus, the Premnath & Bina Rai pair never clicked on the screen.
Premnath earned Filmfare nominations as Best Supporting Actor for Shor (1972), Bobby (1973), Amir Garib (1974) and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974). But he never got any award.
Apart from Hindi films, he also appeared in an episode of the American television series “Maya” in 1967 & a 1969 American film titled “Kenner Sandy” opposite former American football player turned actor Jim Brown. He also directed the film Samundar (1957) for his home production house P. N. films, which was its production. His last film appearance was in “Hum Dono” (1985) after which he retired from acting.
He acted in 121 films. His last film was Farz ki Keemat-1985. He directed 2 films- Golkonda ka qaidi-1954 and Samunder-1957. He sang 5 songs in 5 films.
Premnath died on 03 November 1992 of a heart attack at the age of sixty-five in Mumbai. (adapted from an article by Suresh Sarvaiya ji and book ” The stars of Indian Screen” by Baburao Patel.)
The story of this film was…..
Mangal(Premnath) is a deadly criminal. When he comes, even the police are afraid. An orphan,Vagabond and Gunda, Mangal is a Terror. But this same Mangal is very kind to the poor, helpless and orphans. He gives free foods and medicines to the needy. He is treated like God by the downtrodden people.
He accidentally comes to know about a sex racket, in which the main criminal head of the racket ’Seth ji'(Heeralal) trades poor good looking girls who are helpless. A chance meeting with Rama(Shyama), and he comes to know of a plan to deport a few girls to Dubai for immoral purposes. Seth ji also tries his hand at one of the girls when Mangal appears there and kills him, setting the girls free. Chhabili, Katari and other girls call him their brother. But the ruthless police arrest him, make a case and send him to 7 years in jail. When he comes out he is welcomed with flowers and Rama is still waiting for him.
Premnath preferred roles which were like Robin Hood.He enjoyed such roles. Now tell me if this film’s title is justified ?
Here is a 64 year old song from this film, sung by a 37 year old Rafi and a 28 year old Asha Bhosle. Enjoy ….
Song-Yahaan jo jhooth bolega (Saara Jahaan Hamaara)(1961) Singers- Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyricist- not mentioned in HFGK, MD- Babul
Lyrics
yahaan jo jhooth bolega
wohee noton se khelega
aree aree sun le laila
o o sun le laila
ho o sun le laila
khulegee ek din choree
wo phir jooton se khelega
aayega khoob maza
sun le majnu ke chacha
sun le majnu ke chacha
o yahaan jo jhooth bolega
wohee noton se khelega
ye ek kaaghaz ka tukda hai
magar ismein zamaana hai
magar ismein zamaana hai
ye jiske paas bhee hoga
wohee sabse sayaana hai
wohee sabse sayana hai
kisee ka pyaar jeetega
kisee ke dil ko le lega
kisee ke ae dil ko o le lega
aree aree sun le laila
ho ho ho sun le laila
aa ha ha ha sun le laila
yahaan jo jhooth bolega
wohee noton se khelega
mohabbat bhee o deewaane
kabhee noton se miltee hai
kabhee noton se miltee hai
ke ye naazuk kalee to
aankhon hee aankhon mein khiltee hai
ajee aankhon mein khiltee hai
jo dega dil ke badle dil
wohee kaliyon se khelega
wohee kaliyon on se ae khelega
aayega khoob maza
sun le majnu ke chacha
sun le majnu ke chacha
khulegee ek din choree
to phir jooton se khelega
karoonga ek din kaayal
tujhe apne usoolon se
tujhe apne usoolon se
ke khushboo aa naheen saktee
kabhee kaaghaz ke phoolon se
kabhee kaaghaz ke phoolon se
jo kaanten boyega duniya mein
wo kaanton se khelega
wohee kaanton on se ae khelega
aayega khoob maza
sun le majnu ke chacha
sun le majnu ke chacha
